The quarterback has landed!

Quarterback Chris Simms, released by the Tampa Bay Bucs over the weekend, was last seen at baggage claim at BWI Airport, waiting for a member of the Ravens organization to transport him to the Owings Mills complex.

Simms confirmed to MASN's Jim Hunter, who happened to board the same Southwest flight, that he was meeting with the Ravens and hoped a deal could be worked out because he heard this is a great place to play.

Simms was among the final cuts by the Bucs, who chose Brian Griese as the backup to starter Jeff Garcia. He would provide insurance in case Troy Smith's tonsil infection keeps him out of Sunday's opener or Kyle Boller's shoulder injury lands him on IR. That leaves rookie Joe Flacco, who wasn't supposed to be thrown into the fire so soon.

Told that the Ravens might be hesitant to start a rookie, Simms replied: "From what I hear, they might have to."

Simms, the last pick in the third round of the 2003 draft out of the University of Texas, said his mother is most excited about the possibility of him playing in Baltimore because it's a short drive from Bergen County in New Jersey.

He also told Hunter that he used to pitch in high school, so the Orioles should be equally excited.

Burnett would have to "come at the right price"? Translation: we will continue to be too cheap to make significant additions. Granted, I am not a supporter of bringing on Burnett, but the attitude is not conducive to adding the pieces you need.

"I expect the Orioles to pursue Texiera."

Seriously? Who cares-- with that outlook there isn't a prayer. Isn't that what we did with Vlad, Konerko and others. I thought we had done away with the faux interest in players. You either want Texiera and are ready to break the bank or you are not. This isn't ebay. Since MacPhail arrived we have only gotten less expensive. To be fair, we produce results that are no worse. We'll see when it comes time to pony up. How many championships do the Oakland A's have in recent years?

I remember when the Ravens picked Boller in the first round, that perhaps it would have been prudent to have waited and picked Simms in the second. I thought it would be interesting to compare the careers of both QBs to see how wise the pick was. Seems like neither has done exceptionally well, which makes the Boller pick a waste since he cost us an extra first round pick the next year.

Football is so lame.

Sirius NFL Radio says the Ravens have signed him. No one else is reporting it. As for the O's, with the reported 65 mil in MASN revenue this year alone, it's time for them to put their money where their mouth is. Burnett 4 yrs 60 mil, Lowe 1 yr 10 mil

I'm not too worried about the O's spending money. They have a good amount of it when compared to many other teams and I have no doubt that they'll spend it when the time is right. In order for big time free agents to want to sign here we're gonna have to get a little closer to contending and it may not look like it but I don't think we're that far away. Players aren't that different from the typical fan. We both want to win and see a concrete plan to do so. The O's have a good plan in place and it's less about getting cheaper but rather getting younger. Signing expensive players over the age of 32 doesn't make any sense considering they won't be in their prime when we're competitive. With that said we have to sign some worthwhile pitchers who can throw the darn ball over the plate or it could be a long season next year. I think this time next year we'll be talking about signing some key missing parts in the 09 offseason. By 2010 our highly touted pitching prospects should be ready to compete at the major league level.

Roch, check out this from Profootballtalk.com:

REPORT: SIMMS VISITING THE RAVENS
Posted by Mike Florio on September 1, 2008, 1:31 p.m.
The Mid-Atlantic Sports Network reports that former Bucs quarterback Chris Simms is in Baltimore to visit with the Ravens.

According to Roch “The Casbah” Kubatko (we have no idea whether that’s his nickname, but it should be) of MASN, Simms arrived at the airport and was waiting for a member of the organization to pick him up.

The Ravens currently have three quarterbacks on the roster — Joe Flacco, Troy Smith, and Kyle Boller. But Boller could land on injured reserve due to a shoulder injury.
