Trembley endorses Roberts' return
Manager Dave Trembley can expect another winter filled with speculation on Brian Roberts' future with the Orioles. Will he be traded? Will he stay? Same drill as last winter.
Trembley said he anticipates Roberts staying in Baltimore, and he said it quite strongly.
"I don't see Brian Roberts going anywhere," he said. "Brian Roberts, to me, is a Baltimore Oriole. I've said that all winter. People would say, 'What are your plans with Brian Roberts?' And I'd say, 'He's my leadoff hitter.' And I fully expect that Brian Roberts will be the leadoff hitter on this ballclub for a long time, because of what he means to this team, what he means to this community.
"He is a guy that is a Baltimore Oriole. It's that simple. I don't see him going anywhere. I don't think he wants to go anywhere, which is good for us."

Roch,
Roberts and Guthrie are THE definition of what it means to be an Oriole. It would be fantastic if they decide to be career Orioles. In my humble opinion, and I know this is a long way off, being a career Oriole for Roberts may earn him a bust in Cooperstown provided he maintains his consistency and drive. On and off the field, he's shown he is a stellar human being.
The other day I wrote that the owner of the Portland Beavers is "David" Paulson, son of the Treasury Secretary. Of course, the Secretary himself is David Paulson. His son is Merritt Paulson.
Now here's the odd thing. Could he be named after the failed Maryland Savings and Loan "Merritt Commercial Savings and Loan," which went under the LAST time we had a crisis like this?
Well, no...but it's an interesting coincidence.
Also, for the record, Merritt Commercial S&L (We're not afraid to be first) was a sponsor for "Sports Radio Magazine," a radio show I did with the late, great Garey Lambert, before each O's game on WFBR when they had the O's games and when there WAS a WFBR.
Merritt went under the following year (I think).
I still have the O's t-shirt that Merritt (and our show). It's falling apart but I can't bear to part with it.
I wonder if there's another Jeffrey Leavitt involved this time?
There has been some comments about how much money is owed to Jay Gibbons. Where is he now? In or out of baseball

The Brewers signed him to a minor league deal out of the independent Atlantic League. He finished up in Triple-A. - Roch
Thorne and Martinez commented on Trembley's statement about Roberts on the air, but it was lacking in any perspective about Roberts' interests. Yes, he is a very valuable O, and he likes and is respected in the community, but does he want to play his whole career for a loser? If the oppty arises, why wouldn't Roberts want to go to a contender? Despite better than expected hitting this year, we'll finish in the basement because the pitching imploded, and other than Guthrie, we have no reliable starting pitchers we can count on into the future (I certainly hope Cabrera and others mature but I wouldn't bet much money on it).
And from the team's perspective, nobody should be untouchable except maybe Jones and Markakis, and maybe they should even be traded if they could bring a good starter.
Roch i am sorry but i had to laugh at Glen burnie Joe even associating the words Hall Of Fame in the same sentence with BRIAN ROBERTS. Brian is a good ball player but please he must be growing some great weed in his back yard.
Roberts will be playing for the Yankees in 2010.
You heard it here first.
I love Brian Roberts as much as anyone, but if there's any chance he might decide to leave Baltimore, shouldn't we make a good trade to make sure we don't lose him for nothing in return to free agency? That's worst case scenario to me, losing him and getting nothing in return. I do hope he stays with us though.
I'm just hoping for a winning season next year, this losing streak is getting real old.
Joe in the Dena--Roberts will NOT be playing for the Yankees in 2010 or any other year.
