Browns want to control game with Jamal Lewis
| | Comments (0)

The Cleveland Browns are ready for the Baltimore Ravens, but no one is more excited about playing their AFC North rival than running back and former Raven Jamal Lewis.

I know it's been two years since Lewis last played for the Ravens, but every time he goes against his former team, he has a little more to prove to the team that drafted him in the first-round, 5th overall, in the 2000 NFL Draft.

As a rookie, Lewis led the Ravens to a Super Bowl victory over the NY Giants and he wants to prove to the Cleveland faithful that he can do the same for the Browns.

In Week 3, Lewis had 12 carries for only 56 yards and he wished his number was called more often in the Browns 28-10 loss to Baltimore. He'll get his chance this Sunday to improve on his numbers and try to lead Cleveland to a victory.

The Browns have been more dedicated to the run in the last four weeks than they were in the first three when they dropped three straight to begin the season. Lewis was averaging 15 carries and 52 yards with no touchdowns as the team started 0-3.

In the four games since, he is averaging 21 attempts and 82 yards with three TD's and the Browns are 3-1. In the last two years, Cleveland is 11-1 when Lewis has had at least 20 carries.

Just as important as controlling the ball with the ground game, the Browns needs to protect the ball and not turn it over to a Ravens offense that appears to be hitting their stride with rookie quarterback Joe Flacco.

Browns QB Derek Anderson, who had a turnover in three of the first four games, has not thrown an interception in the last three weeks, while tossing five TD's. In the Week 3 loss to Baltimore, the Ravens turned two of Anderson's three picks into TD's in a 50-second span in the third quarter.

Cleveland has won three of the last four meetings between the two rivals on the banks of Lake Erie, and I see the Browns controlling the clock with Lewis and winning a close contest 16-13.
