Checking on Loewen
| | Comments (20)

He's not an Oriole anymore, but I assume there's still a little bit of interest in Adam Loewen and his transformation from left-handed pitcher to Toronto Blue Jays' hitting prospect.

Or maybe it's more like curiosity. Or perhaps you want to forget he even exists, which would make the rest of this blog entry far less appealing to you.

Loewen played in his second game last night in the Hawaii Winter League, joining a group of Orioles minor leaguers on the West Oahu roster. He walked in his first at-bat, was hit by a pitch and took a called third strike, leaving him 0-for-2 on the island.

Then he announced that he was going to remake himself into a first base coach.

Tim Bascom was lifted after three innings. He allowed five runs and four hits, walked three and struck out four. He threw 66 pitches, 35 for strikes.

Bascom is 1-3 with a 7.78 ERA.

Tyler Henson had a bases-loaded triple.

I hope he was hit hard.

I think you mean "morbid curiosity." Or perhaps maudlin...

Jeff,

I was thinking the same thing. Right in the elbow.

I hope he goes O for his career.

Wasn't Loewen one of the two pitchers Dave Trembley had hitting in the batting cage in the bowels of OPACY when Aubrey Huff was tossed for arguing balls and strikes as our DH? I remember a game where we didn't have anybody left on the bench and a pitcher would have had to bat. Trachsel was one of the two.

Oh well. I'll second what Jeff said. I even hope he "rubbed" it.

Lauren said:

Jeff - that's kind of mean. Although I'm bummed that Loewen's not with the O's anymore (and a bit upset by the situation), I wouldn't wish harm on him...that's just not cool.

Roch,
I was reading my S.I. yesterday and it mentioned that B-Rob was a shortstop (Baseball America's Best) coming out of college. Wouldn't it be interesting to have him give it a try again? Maybe there are some better second baseman out there to fill a gap. Not meaning better than Brob just better than the SS available. Thoughts?

Roberts was, indeed, a shortstop in college and when he was drafted, but his arm was better suited for second base. I seem to recall a surgery to remove bone chips. Anyway, he's now a full-time second baseman. - Roch

Sorry Adam, but I can't help but hope you fail now. You chose to go to a division foe so any success you have works against the Orioles. Plus, it just pours salt on the wound. Enjoy the $4 million which in retrospect is just crazy money for a totally unproven commodity and a crapshoot at best. The farther we get from this, I can say that the FO had to let him go. If MacPhail is true to his word, we are getting some help from the cavalry soon and we won't need to rely on an oft-injured pitcher to rescue the franchise.

Looking back on it, I thought it was strange that AM was not particularly thrilled about the very competitve first half of '08. I think he anticipated the difficult second half and was worried that we fans would get ahead of ourselves (which we did). This organization was an unqualified mess. It's hard to imagine that we will receive very little in return for the first decade of losing, but that's ultimately the pill that we will have to swallow. Despite the slow pace, AM is laying a solid foundation. There's probably no other way to do it without making huge gambles (something that hasn't worked out for us). We have at least a couple years left of subpar ball but it could have been worse.

Adam Ingrate... enjoy the buses.

I'm not really ready to think or talk about Loewen and how he's doing in another team's minor league system yet....but "Then he announced that he was going to remake himself into a first base coach." did make me smile a little!

Jeff V. said:

Shame he is on the same team as the O's prospects, would be nice to know if they follow orders.

Oh well there is always spring training.

Tom said:

Nice to see Adam is finding ways to get on base! Hey is there any truth about the Orioles thinking about signing Toby Hall?

Ray said:

See the Royals were able to get Mike Jacobs(first baseman) from the Marlins for a little bit of nothing, relief pitcher, Leo Nunez. Missed opportunity for the O's, but then again it may curtail our brief chase for Mark Texiera(lol).

I heard Loewen always wanted to play in the Hawaii Winter League because it's so close to his home, and he's always been a fan...

... oh wait.

Satyr3206 said:

I don't really give a crap how Loewen is doing. I haven't said anything about this but the O's said all along they wanted him and he seemed to agree. Then at the last minute he signs with the Canadian Mounties. That's his choice but he sure handled it bad. A little warning would have been nice.

f adam loewen. I hope someone hits him right in the ear with a 99 mph fast ball!

Lauren

I meant no harm towards the man... not like I am rooting for a career or life threatening injury... just a little karma!!

Alan in VA said:

Sorry, its going to be a long time before I want to hear anything about

He still got the roster spot for West Oahu? Geeze louise...I sent him some instant karma from my home 10 miles away. If I go to see a game this weekend and wear a halloween costume I can get a $1 ticket...how's that for a bargain?
