Fabian feeling good

After last season's injury debacle at cornerback, the Ravens knew they needed to improve their depth at the position this offseason. Instead of attacking that need through the Draft, as many thought they would, GM Ozzie Newsome and the Baltimore brass traded a fourth-round pick to the Raiders for fourth-year corner Fabian Washington.

Washington has dealt with some issues both on and off the field in the last few months, as a February arrest led to a one-game suspension to start the season, and hamstring, neck, and shoulder injuries have limited his playing time since then.

The last few weeks, however, the 25-year-old's health has improved, and injuries to starting corners Chris McAlister and Samari Rolle have thrust him into action.

I was able to talk with Washington before the Ravens packed up for their trip to Cleveland, and he told me feels like he's gotten his play back to where it needs to be.

"I feel like I've been doing pretty good," he said, "but there's always room to improve. I feel like my play has been solid from week to week. I've been improving, but I need to take it to that next level, where I'm getting interceptions. I've got to make plays now, because my defensive play has been pretty solid."

Washington faced his old team last week, and had a chance late in the game for some major payback. A JaMarcus Russell pass was heading right towards him, but the ball bounced off his hands and fell incomplete. It would've been a sure pick-6 had he brought the ball in.

"It took a few days to get past it, trust me," he said. "I wanted that one [worse] than most people know. But it didn't happen, and you've got to let it go. Hopefully I can get that same play again versus Cleveland. It would be sweet, but it wouldn't be as sweet."

Washington said he tries not to let the emotions from a game affect his play the next time out. Whether he has a great game or gets burned on a few plays, he moves past it and tries to focus on the next opponent.

"I've seen where corners may have a terrible game one week and have a great game the next week. Or sometimes, corners may have back-to-back bad games and that can start to mess with your head a little bit, but then they come out of it the next game. I take each game as a seperate entity."

Washington has played well the past few weeks, not coincidentally as he's gotten healthier. The secondary has been without 75% of their starters of late, but Washington, Frank Walker and Jim Leonhard have filled in admirably, and the group held the Raiders to just 187 net passing yards last week.

Being banged up and missing the season opener with the suspension haven't made for the smoothest transition to a new defense, but Washington says he's feeling comfortable in Rex Ryan's system, and he's on the top of his game.

"I'm moving around better than I've ever moved around," he told me. "I'm breaking on balls [well], my footwork is pretty much where I want it to be right now, my technique is where I want it to be. Everything in my game is the best its been since I've been in the NFL, it's just now I need to just start catching the ball and going the other way with it."
