Gregg to IR
Head coach John Harbaugh gave an update on a variety of injuries and roster moves today at his post-practice news conference.
Harbaugh announced that Kelly Gregg's micro-fracture surgery on his left knee actually went better than the team expected it would. Dr. James Andrews performed the procedure yesterday and told the Ravens that less work had to be done than the team had initially thought.
Gregg was placed on Injured Reserve and should be ready to play by next season.
The Ravens have signed defensive tackle Brandon McKinney to take Gregg's spot on the roster. McKinney started two games for the San Diego Chargers last season and was released by the Chargers on Saturday.
Harbaugh also announced that Adam Terry, Fabian Washington, Tom Zbikowski, Daniel Wilcox, Derrick Martin and Todd Heap all have "bumps and bruises", and are day-to-day. Terry (knee sprain) and Washington (shoulder sprain) both had to leave the Ravens' game against the Titans on Sunday.
Harbaugh's final injury-related note was on quarterback Troy Smith. Harbaugh said that Smith is now moving "full spead ahead" and is back as a completely healthy quarterback for the first time since he suffered a rare tonsil illness in the preseason.
With Joe Flacco firmly slotted into the starting quarterback spot and Todd Bouman backing him up, Smith will be relegated to the third-string role for now.
Harbaugh said if Smith progresses well, he could work his way into the backup QB job, but seemed to make it clear that barring injury, Flacco will be the starter the rest of the season.
