Mason needs some help
| | Comments (0)

In Monday's loss to the Steelers, half of Joe Flacco's completions went to wide receiver Derrick Mason. Mason caught eight passes, racking up 137 yards in the process.

The running backs caught six passes -- three each by Willis McGahee and Le'Ron McClain. Wideout Demetrius Williams and tight end Daniel Wilcox rounded out the receving line with one catch apiece.

Mark Clayton? Zip. Todd Heap? Nada.

That's two catches by receivers and tight ends not named Derrick Mason. If you think the Tennessee Titans weren't watching and don't plan on taking Mason out of the game this Sunday, you're insane.

The stingy Titans D will double-cover number 85 and force Flacco to look elsewhere. That's why Clayton, Heap, Williams and company will need to step up.

"Derrick made a huge statement the other night in his game, and now Todd, this is a big week for Todd, " offensive coordinator Cam Cameron said today. "So yeah, we're trying for Todd, we're trying for Mark. Demetrius, yesterday's the healthiest I've seen him since I've been here. But, we've got room for growth, and we're not going to throw it every down."

Williams was expected to provide a vertical threat to the passing game, but has had trouble staying healthy since he was drafted two years ago. The former Oregon Duck might be the key to getting the offense in a groove.

If he can get things going and show defenses his ability to stretch the field and make big plays, it will keep the safeties honest and open up more space for Mason, Clayton and Heap.
