I understand that times change, but the NFL needs to step back and start embracing its roots.

Just not too tightly, or an official is going to throw a flag for unnecessary roughness.

It's a game for sissies now, and I say that knowing fully that Ray Lewis could bend me like a pretzel and dip me in yellow mustard.

The Terrell Suggs roughing penalty will go down as one of the worst this season, but did you see what happened to Steelers linebacker James Harrison last night? He was called for the same infraction after drilling Jaguars quarterback David Garrard.

The hit was delivered around Garrard's chest, and Harrison probably took one step, tops, after the ball was released. Is he supposed to apply the emergency brake and come to an immediate stop? THAT'S illegal?

I think it was former Steelers linebacker Jack Lambert who once suggested that quarterbacks should start wearing dresses. And that was a long time ago. Now the rules to protect them have become so extreme, I don't believe you're allowed to look at them as they break the huddle or it's five yards and an automatic first down.

Later in the same game, receiver Nate Washington made a reception near the Jags' sideline, held up the football for about two seconds and was called for unsportsmanlike conduct. I believe he smiled, which was the clincher.

I can see creating rules to stop players from text messaging their friends on the 50-yard line after a touchdown, or auditioning for "Dancing With the Stars" after making a tackle behind the line, but this is ridiculous.

Let the guys play football or hand me the remote. I'd rather watch the World Series of Poker or the Food Network. I already feel like I'm watching the Lifetime channel.

Meanwhile, I assume that I'll eventually get used to hearing "Cassel to Moss," but it's going to take some time.

I badly underestimated the Giants. I don't see a Super Bowl hangover with these guys, and the offense is cranked up. They might be better than last year's team, which snuck up on us toward the end and took the trophy.

I also owe the Redskins a huge apology. I didn't think they'd be significant, but they just beat Dallas and Philadelphia back-to-back on the road. That's significant.

And who was that pitcher pretending to be Josh Beckett last night? The one who gagged in the playoffs? Had to be an imposter.

Watching the White Sox-Rays game reminded me of Chicago manager Ozzie Guillen's comment about catcher A.J. Pierzynski in a recent issue of The Sporting News.

Pierzynski might be the least-popular player in baseball, which led to this exchange:

TSN: "Everybody hates A.J. Pierzynski. How about you?"

Guillen: "So do I. You play against A.J., you hate him. You play with A.J., you hate him a little less."

If Guillen was an NFL head coach, he'd be penalized for unnecessary roughness.

Don't worry, it's still ok to bounce through the line and throw Flacco to the ground after the whistle is blow and no one else is moving.

Amen ! It's the No fun, No pass defense, No mussing the QB's 'do league. One reason I'm still a Bears fan is that when I do get to see them, I know I'm going to see some serious hits. Most of the other NFL games, I am bored.
I wouldn't go so far as watching poker on TV, though - have some standards, man !
