Orioles Release Adam Loewen: Outright Five to Norfolk
The Orioles today announced that they have released LHP ADAM LOEWEN and outrighted RHP RANDOR BIERD and RHP ROCKY CHERRY, INF BRANDON FAHEY, OF JEFF FIORENTINO and CA OMIR SANTOS to Triple-A Norfolk.
Loewen, 24, was 0-2 with an 8.02 ERA (21.1IP, 19ER) in seven games for the Orioles. He was placed on the disabled list on July 8 with a re-injury of the stress fracture in his left elbow that ended his 2007 season as well. Loewen, who attended the Orioles' fall instructional league, is attempting a comeback as a position player.
Bierd, 24, who was selected by the Orioles in the Rule 5 Draft from the Detroit Tigers last December, went 0-2 with a 4.91 ERA (36.2IP, 20ER) in 29 games with the Orioles.
Cherry, 28, split time between Norfolk and Baltimore, going 0-3 with a 6.35 ERA (17.0IP, 12ER) in 18 games for the Orioles.
Fahey, 27, also split the season between Norfolk and Baltimore, batting .226 (24-106) with 12 RBI in 58 games for Baltimore.
Fiorentino, 25, opened the season in the Oakland Athletics organization before being claimed on waivers by the Orioles. He was sent to Norfolk June 5 and batted .268 (61-228) with two home runs and 25 RBI in 68 games.
Santos, 27, batted .100 (1-10) in 11 games for the Orioles after appearing in 84 games for Norfolk, where he batted .269 with one home run and 25 RBI
