Choosing the best DH

Headline of the day: "Pirates Hijack $100 Million of Oil"

Does this now put them in the running to sign Teixeira?

Since Cal Ripken has become a blogger here at masnsports.com, I've decided to work for 2,131 consecutive days at School of Roch.

I haven't missed filing an entry since the doors opened on Aug. 1. I'm experiencing the usual aches and pains this time of the year, but I'll fight through them.

I just hope I don't get caught under a pile if a brawl breaks out. It happened to Ripken against the Seattle Mariners, and he almost didn't play the next day. Head athletic trainer Richie Bancells worked on the knee extensively, after Ripken informed him that The Streak was likely over.

I don't have anyone taking such good care of me, but I also intend to stay on top of every pile.

I'm staring at the ballot for the Edgar Martinez Outstanding Designated Hitter Award - which is a nice distraction from the snowflakes that are falling outside my window. I'll pretend I didn't see them. Winter is just a rumor, like Brian Roberts being traded.

Voters can choose a first- and second-place finisher. Here are the leading candidates:

Aubrey Huff, 98 games, .303 average, 33 doubles, 23 home runs, 77 RBIs
Jim Thome, 140 games, .246 average, 27 doubles, 34 homers, 90 RBIs
David Ortiz, 109 games, .264 average, 30 doubles, 23 homers, 89 RBIs
Milton Bradley, 100 games, .322 average, 20 doubles, 15 homers, 54 RBIs

Huff already won the Silver Slugger Award as designated hitter.

Since a DH doesn't play defense, what is the difference, in theory at least, between this award and the DH Silver Slugger?

Two different entities give it out. Silver Slugger honors hitters at all positions and DH. This is strictly a DH award. - Roch

I love you Roch...just for saying that! I have been a fan of him since he was named the nation's Freshman of the Year in 1997 at the University of North Carolina....from there it jet-fueled I never want to see him go!

This obviously goes to Huff. Although as he himself said, it helps that David Ortiz had an off year.

Roch,

When in doubt, vote for Jim Thome...a true slugger, seemingly a great guy, and he did things the RIGHT way (unlike the Cansecos, Bonds, and, yes the Palmeiros of the world).

Bill G. said:

Yo Roch...Cal got a couple months off every year between games. Don't you need a break or are you like all the bloggers Sarah Palin knows...in pajamas in your Mom's basement?

I want Aubrey to win everything so we can trade him.

Brian said:

Roch, you are going to stay on top of what at MASN?

HUFF naturally, be a homer like all the rest.

Steve said:

Do you picture old school pirate ships shooting cannons at the giant oil tanker?

I do.

Lotsa parrots flying around, too.

I don't understand how anybody can look at those numbers and think "Jim Thome." It's not an Oscar for Career Achievement, it's the DH award for 2008. Look at it this way: Thome will get in the Hall of Fame. Huff will not. So it's Huff all the way for DH.
