Gameday superstitions & rituals: Jason Brown
Despite being in just his fourth NFL season, Jason Brown has taken somewhat of a leadership role on the Ravens' young offensive line.

Brown has organized various bonding trips among the offensive linemen, taking them out on fishing trips to encourage chemistry earlier in the season, and it seems to be working. The NFL's youngest O-line has done a fantastic job this season taking care of Joe Flacco and opening holes for the three-headed rushing monster.
Brown is a big part of their success. I had a chance to sit down with the 25-year old center after Friday's practice to talk with him about his routine on Sundays and how he mentally prepares himself for gametime.
What's a typical morning like for you the day of a game? What's your routine when you wake up?
"1:00 game, I get up pretty early. I get up at like 6:00, maybe 5:45. I get up and get a good stretch, just to get going. Get a good stretch, go take a [bathroom trip], though you're probably not interested in that. Then I'll go over my playbook again, just to refresh my mind. I'll get the morning paper, and just start reading just to get my mind going. Before you know it, we have chapel service at 8:30, then pregame meal at 9:00."
What about once you get over to the stadium, how do you usually structure your pregame preparations?
"The routine over there is hurry up and get changed, get in the hot tub, get my body warmed up, get my muscles warmed up. Then I see the chiropractor, make sure everything is alligned. Then I probably take another [bathroom trip] somewhere in between there. I'll go ahead and get my ankles taped. I get my shoes spatted, tape my wrists and it just goes from there."
Thanks for the bathroom details. Do you have any superstitions before a game, anything that you always make sure you do either for good luck or just because you feel it helps you get ready?
"No...not really. It's just routine. The more you stay into a routine, I think that helps build confidence as well, because you're just doing the same thing over and over and over again. The one thing with me is -- I don't like to be rushed. That's why I get to the stadium early and make sure everything is layed out, everything is in its proper place. I just get started early.
"One of my biggest fears is...I'll have a bad dream where I'm late to the game, you know what I mean? I'll get out there on the field, and they're like, 'Jason Brown! Where's Jason Brown at?' Either that or I'm stuck in traffic or for some reason something is keeping me from getting there on time. So I just hate being rushed, I hate being late to anything. I just definitely like getting there early and start getting ready."
Do you have a movie that you watch or any music that you like to listen to before a game to get you mentally ready?
"I just downloaded a lot of the Bond music and some of the theme songs to the Bond movies are pretty good. And that will definitely get you going."
When does that mental intensity start to kick in for you? Do you feel it when you get to the stadium, or right before a game, or sometime in between?
"It's not like the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning is go, 'AHHH!!! We're going to go out there and beat 'em down!' No, it escalates little bit by little bit. Nobody really has the angry face at breakfast time, getting ready to kick somebody's butt over bacon and eggs.
"But definitely by the time you get to the stadium and you start warming up and you get suited for battle, definitely it's like a transformation. It just escalates from when you get up in the morning. Your mental preparation, that's what we call it. Your mental preparation and your mental focus honed in on your opponent and getting ready."
