Josh Smoker has successful surgery
Nationals left-handed pitcher Josh Smoker had successful surgery on Tuesday to remove a bone spur from his left shoulder. The surgery was performed by Dr. James Andrews who reported that Smoker's left-shoulder labrum and rotator cuff appeared normal.
Washington's sandwich pick in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, Smoker should begin physical therapy immediately, with the expectation of starting a throwing program in six weeks. He should be ready for Spring Training 2009.
Smoker went 0-4 with an 11.50 ERA in five starts for Single-A Hagerstown before being sent down to Rookie ball for the rest of the season. In six starts for the Gulf Coast League Nationals, he went 2-1 with a 1.37 ERA.
