Quick shameless plug alert
I'll be appearing on MASN's Playmakers from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
I'm sitting in the studio, trying to prepare while doing 12 things at once. Should go smoothly.
Joe Jordan (4:45 p.m.), the Orioles' director of scouting, will be calling into the show, along with Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Palmer (5 p.m.) and Ravens offensive tackle Adam Terry (5:30 p.m.).
I'm sure Mike Mussina's name will come up in the discussion with Palmer. Moose has officially announced his retirement. Palmer already has endorsed him for the Hall of Fame.

Personally I'm all for Mussina getting into the hall of fame. It's sort of a bummer that a lot of Orioles fans hate on him so much. Congrats on a great career Mike! Hope you go in wearing an O's cap though.
It is sad....I can close my eyes and still see that windup from old 35..pitching 9 innings of perfect ball...taking us a couple breaths from the world series!!! People Should understand that mistakes are made and forgive......Angelos and the organization messed up in the handeling of ol 35.....Things just happen... He is a sure fire Hall of Famer... we all know it.......That dominant....in a steroid era.....consistantly....great.....Isnt that more Hall of Fame than 1 or 2 great moments......Most times those 1 or 2 great moments are luck...A hall of fame induction should not rely on luck....it should rely on excellence..Think of all the 1 run games he lossed in orange and black.....Think of that little punk Yankees fan.(Jeffry Maher)..who stole a great Mussina World series pitched game from us.... Not his fault that he ended up playing for the Tankees...he thought he was going to the Yankees home of Mr. October.....Not his fault The Orioles decided to take 12 yrs off from competing I do not think Mr Angelos wanted it this way anymore than any of us did.......Just wish all the years wouldve been here.........I actually dont even believe it was suppose to happen that way..........The most loved pitcher since 22 wasnt suppose to go........... This year is the first time I could watch him pitch against us.......It hurt that bad........My wife helped me thru that........I am sure many feel the same.......I am glad cooperstown makes the final say on the jersey......At least we have a chance.......Mike most of us are not mad at you ...i equate it to how the breakup of The Beatles cast a cloud over music for The whole decade of the 70's. The Moose leaving Did the same to us........it cast that dark cloud that we still feel 12yrs later.........MAYBE IN SOME WAY THIS RETIREMENT WILL END THE CURSE OF THE MOOSE IN BALTIMORE...wouldnt it be just a little wierd if it happens that way.
Only 30 min for Palmer? I guess you & the other Playmakers didn't intend to speak huh?
Hey Roch - I just saw, in a certain newspaper that shall remain nameless, that Adam Jones and Garrett Olson will be playing in the Pam Shriver charity tennis game tomorrow. I remember years ago watching that on TV - Brady Anderson and BJ Surhoff were in it. Any idea if this one might be on TV sometime?

If I hear about it being replayed, I'll certainly pass it along to you. - Roch
Mussina had freedom of choice, something a lot of working folk don't have. He made the choice he felt comfortable with. I think he should wear a Yankees hat in the HOF. That's how he got famous -- as a Yankee.
The Beatles?! That's great. I was actually thinking about the Beatles when I posted earlier. But I figured nobody remembers the last song they ever recorded as "The Beatles". Lennon was not there. He had already quit. And the very last song that they did, the other three of them, still using the The Beatles name, was very very fitting to the Mussina situation (and to the Paul/John thing, I guess).
Every time I hear it now, I will think of old Moose:
"All through the day, I me mine, I me mine, I me mine
All throught the night, I me mine, I me mine, I me mine
I I me me mine
I I me me mine
I I me me mine
I I me me mine"
Look, if Nick or Brian are waiting for Peter or Andy to send them roses, pucker up and kiss their "hip" or in some other way make up for the fact that daddy never loved them, then they will likely leave too.
But I think they are better people than that. It should be the fans that matter. It should be the fans that matter. It should be the fans that matter. It should be the kids in the stands that matter.
Hey, but then again, I didn't go to Stanford so I could be mistaken. Maybe the smartest and most appropriate way to set your own self-esteem and gauge your worth as a human being is to try to read the body language and facial expressions of the businessman who owns the team but never steps on the field. The guy who, other than pay you whatever silly sums of money you can dream of asking for, has nothing to do with your art, your gift, your talent, or your well being. Yeah, that sounds right.
MILLIONS of everyday people of all ages love you, root for you, want you in their community and pay to support your lifestyle. But chuck it all because some slick NY businessman read Dale Carneige and calls you back more quickly. Good thinking.

if MM does make the HOF, will the Hall post him as a NYY or w an OS cap?
your thoughts>

That's been the hot debate. I'm thinking Mussina has some say in it since there isn't a huge difference in the number of years he spent in both organizations. The Hall would probably let him decide without feeling that it had to intervene (as it did with Boggs and Carter). Just my opinion. And I honestly don't know which direction he'd go. I'm assuming the Hall would prefer Orioles. - Roch
Dear Mr. Nealis,
Something...seems to be...wrong with....your period....key...almost seems....like it is sticking or possibly....you...got some...goo in it...or maybe you are....just imitating....William...Shatner....can't tell.
Sincerely,
The Grammar Police
Mark C - I hope you feel better after your rant on Mussina.
Suppose you are one of the best at what you do, maybe the best. You have previously agreed to a contract extension that was below the standard in your profession and were ripped for it by your union(see Tom Glavine). You are a free agent and have the chance to find one more big contract before you retire. Your curent employer seems hesitant to offer market value. What would you do?
I'll agree, as you say, the fans and kids should matter, but in reality they don't. If you think they do, you're living in a fantasy world. What matters is that the player feels appreciated and receives fair treatment. I don't think that's too much to expect. How does that happen? Management proves that by offering market value contracts. Peter Angelos never offered Mussina that. Will the Orioles soon offer Markakis what Rios at Toronto got? If Orlando Hudson gets fifty million for five years, as he's seeking, is Brian Roberts worth more? Will the Orioles even match that?
Also, we(the Orioles) did bring him to the majors, but we did not make him a star. He earned that as a kid growing up in a small town. He earned a scholarship to Stanford and then cruised through the minors. Just like the Orioles aren't going to make Matt Wieters a star.
Kudos to Ray and Mike-They got it right.Any of the idiots that say they would not have done what Mussina did is living in a fantasy world.I despise the Yankees, but I would have signed too-Why?I am not an idiot.Much more money,respect-better chance for the "ring",security.Nuff said
