Sammy leaves Seattle
| | Comments (12)

Former Orioles manager Sam Perlozzo has joined the Philadelphia Phillies' coaching staff after one season in Seattle.

Perlozzo's duties haven't been defined yet, beyond his usual gig coaching the infielders. Bench coach and third base coach are open.

Also, the Yankees acquired Nick Swisher from the Chicago White Sox. Swisher plays all three outfield positions, but might have been obtained so he could replace Jason Giambi at first base.

Does this take the Yankees out of the running for Mark Teixeira?

well, they got a Japanese player with the same last name as mark, so maybe? lets hope.

Looks like Aubrey Huff won a Silver Slugger award, he deserves it. Hope he can do it again, and hopefully its batting 4th Markakis batting 3rd with Tex batting 5th and Weiters 6th. That will bring in some runs, Roberts would stay for sure knowing he could score 150 runs next year!!

unfortunately, the yanks have shown that they are never out of the running. especially when it comes to big name free agents.

i see markakis third, huff fourth, tex fifth (hope, hope), and i'm all for weiters starting with the club out of spring training. i'm not so sure i see him in the six slot to start. i could see jones in the six slot, and weiters slotted down to eighth. to start, anyhow. maybe even jones second and mora sixth. and then don't forget luke scott slots in there somewhere, too. and who knows who the ss will be.

beyond that, i'm still in favor of bringing in zaun as supplemental/tutorial catcher to weiters.

In response to Jennifer's comment about the serious man-crushing on Markakis, I'd like to say that it has to do with stubble. Now, this theory is something that just occurred to me, but look at the guys that men man-crush on. Harrison Ford, Jack Bauer, and of course Chuck Norris are all a bit rough around the edges. Having stubble portrays a person who's worked hard to get to where he's at. Men respect that a lot more than dimples.

That's why I would support the Orioles dropping their facial hair policy.

The Yankees have a crowded (and expensive) outfield with Hedeki Matsui coming back from injury, Xavier Nady, Johnny Damon (if you consider what he does in the field playing defense), Melky Cabrera and Brett Garnder. Maybe they are considering platooning Swisher in the outfield and at firstbase/DH as well. It certainly opens the door to the idea that the yankees are going to focus on pitching this offseason in Free Agency and I'm not sure that is a good thing for us oriole fans.

Good for Aubrey btw! Silver Slugger is one of the few awards around that actually reflect performances unlike Gold Glove (re:Michael Young winning). Huff certainly deserves it. I look forward to hearing from him on the radio later this offseason!

If I were Scott Boras I would be wondering if this took both the Yankees and the Red Sux out of the Teixeria sweepstakes.

Is anyone else thinking that the Yanks may have acquired Swisher in order to flip him to the Brewers as part of trade for Fielder and Cameron?

Teixeira would bat 4th in the O's line up. Huff would be 5th. Trembley likes to split up the left handed hitters. So sticking a switch hitter between 2 lefties is the way to go.

I would think the lineup would be something like this
BRob
Kakes
Tex
Huff
Mora
Scott
Jones
Wieters
SS???

Eventually Wieters would move up towards the top and Jones moves up a couple spots as well. But I would think most of this year would be something like this.

Just a thought, but if we do sign Tex do we really need an offensive minded SS? Seems like we should get some nice production even without help at SS.

Good luck to Sammy. I'm sure he'll enjoy being closer to home. (And following the path of Jamie Moyer from Baltimore to Seattle to Philly.) Never thought much of Perlozzo as a manager, but he does seem like a swell guy.

NY Post reported today that the Yankees interest in Tex and Manny was way overblown. They want Sabathia and either Burnett or Lowe. My predictions
Tex:Ana
Sabathia:NYY
K Rod:NYM
Burnett:Bal
Lowe:NYY
Man Ram:LAD

This means that Bos will make their splash thru trade. Though they will sign B Penny as well.

You people are so infatuated with Texira! It ain't gonna happen!!

Would Baltimore fans be this infatuated with Mark Teixeira if he didn't grow up in Maryland? Instead of throwing $200 million his way, it may be better spent in the minor leagues, overseas scouting, etc. Put Huff at first base in 2009, pick up an aging DH (there's usually plenty available) and spend it in 2010 if you must.
