Dave Trembley talks about the latest Brian Roberts rumor
| | Comments (0)

Before he went out to take his daily walk on the beach near his Daytona Beach Shores, Florida home today, O's manager Dave Trembley was nice enough to spend some time with me on the phone, talking baseball and providing his input on some Orioles' news.

To squelch one rumor, don't expect to see Brian Roberts at shortstop next year.

A writer for Sports Illustrated suggested the O's make that bold move, then go out and acquire a second baseman, and O's fans have been wondering about the move on message boards around the web.

"Brian Roberts is an All-Star caliber second baseman and premier leadoff hitter. I leave him there at second," Trembley said. "No one from our organization has ever talked about moving Brian back to short. I got questions about moving Adam Jones to short last spring, but he's our center fielder."

In September, with just days left in the regular season, the skipper said he felt certain that Roberts would remain an Oriole for a long time and not be traded.

He still feels that way.

"I am still of the mindset that Brian Roberts is my leadoff hitter and will be with this club for a long time. From what I understand, Andy has had preliminary discussions with both Brian and Markakis on a contract. Brian has expressed to me that he wants to stay with the Orioles. Every player wants to be with a winner, but I don't get the feeling he wants to leave. Brian, Nick and Jones are three core guys, three real valuable players for us."

Trembley said he will return to Baltimore next week for the Orioles' big announcement and that he'll attend next month's Winter Meetings in Las Vegas as well.

I'll post more of Dave's comments later this week, so check back to see what else the skipper had to say about his Baltimore Orioles.
