The new uniforms
| | Comments (6)

To answer two of your most pressing questions about the Orioles' new uniforms, the road jerseys have "Baltimore" written across the front for the first time since 1972, and the caps don't come with a cartoon bird.

The home whites have the same Orioles script on the front, but you might notice orange and black stripes on the sleeves and down the pant legs - similar to the 1989-93 period -instead of a thin black stripe. But you'd have to be pretty observant to notice it without reading this blog. As I wrote yesterday, some changes are subtle.

The road grays have "Baltimore" written in a script that hasn't been used in the past. It's basically the same font used for "Orioles" on the home jerseys, though it's resized because "Baltimore" is a longer word. I even counted the letters to make sure.

I hinted a few days ago about the possibility of the Maryland state flag being incorporated onto the sleeves, and I was correct. Each jersey comes with a circular patch on the left sleeve outlined in a band of orange that includes the flag inside - similar to what the Ravens wear. It'll read "Baltimore Orioles" on the home jerseys and "Orioles baseball" on the road jerseys, since that uniform already has "Baltimore" stamped across the chest.

The club is being very careful to have "Baltimore" appear somewhere on every uniform, whether it's the jersey or sleeve. That includes the alternative black jerseys for Friday night games that can be worn at home or on the road. In that instance, "Baltimore" is written on the right sleeve.

Now for the caps. The bird isn't a cartoon and he isn't fierce, so kill those two rumors. It's very similar to the old one, except his feet are "perched" and a grayish-silver threading has replaced the yellow. And I'll go on record as saying it's not as pigeon-like as the old bird. He's supposed to be more vibrant and contemporary.

Some of you will approve, others will prefer the cartoon model, though I seem to remember it being criticized back in the day for looking like a duck.

By the way, mad props to the Orioleshangout.com member who was clever enough to find the redesigned cap on New Era's Web site. (Perhaps the mascot should have been a cat coming out of a bag).

The black jacket that you'll see manager Dave Trembley wearing in the dugout on those cold nights includes the "swinging bird" on the left sleeve. That'll take you back to better times, though it last appeared in 1988, a season that doesn't exactly warm your heart.

If you attend tomorrow's noon rally or tune into MASN for live coverage, you'll find out about another change that has club officials pretty jazzed. I'll keep that one under wraps.

And just so you know, I've already suggested that the next step is to put better players inside these uniforms.

One step at a time.

I just have one word for the news.

AWESOME!

Let's see what's going on tomorrow and get our first look at the jerseys, caps, and more surprises!

This is like an early Christmas present. I just want more of them!

Figures. While I'm stoked they finally put Baltimore on the away jersey (36 years? Really?) The stupid proper looking bird remains. Does ANYONE really like that bird? It's horrible and was the one thing I was looking forward to getting rid of. Shocker the Orioles can't even get this right. I don't know why I even care, you can shine a turd and it's still a turd. But the Orioles couldn't even do that. I hate that stupid looking bird. I can guarantee I won't ever be buying one of those.

They have the "new logo" on the baltimore sun, its pretty much that same crappy bird. I could care less about the uniform, but the hats terrible. They should give up the stupid orange visors while they're at it. I gave up supporting them by buying those things quite a while ago. Why do they even claim they changed it? Anyone who wasn't totally familiar with it probably wouldn't know the difference anyway. I know there's much more important things to deal with regarding the team, but that logos the worst in the mlb and it still is.
