Tim Foli returns to manage Triple-A affiliate
The Nationals Triple-A affiliate, the Syracuse Chiefs of the International League, have their coaching staff in place for the 2009 season.
Tim Foli, who managed the Triple-A Columbus Clippers last season, will return as manager of the Chiefs. Foli has been the skipper of Washington's top affiliate in three of the past four seasons. Last year the Clippers finished 69-73, 18 games out of first place in the International League West Division.
Steve McCatty returns for his fourth consecutive season as pitching coach with the Nationals' Triple-A affiliate. He has mentored such hurlers as John Lannan, Collin Balester, Joel Hanrahan, Mike Hinckley, Garrett Mock and Steven Shell.
Last season Columbus finished with a 4.21 ERA, eighth in the league, and totaled 1,089 strikeouts, third in the league. This will be McCatty's 14th season as a pitching coach.
Darnell Coles gets promoted to hitting coach of the Chiefs. He spent the last two seasons as a manager in the Nationals' system with Single-A Hagerstown in 2008 and short-season Vermont in 2007.
The Suns went a combined 61-78, 18 ½ games out of first, in the South Atlantic League Northern Division last year. After a decent first-half, 34-35, Hagerstown struggled in the second half, finishing 27-43.
Also, Mike Quinn will return for his eighth season as head athletic trainer at Triple-A for the Nationals.
