Touring the NFL

I went 4-0 picking against the spread in the 4 p.m. games yesterday, and also hit with Dallas last night.

Now the bad news: I lost Thursday night's game and went 1-8 in yesterday's early games, my only correct selection being Green Bay over Chicago.

They don't call me "Mr. Consistency" for nothing.

The Arizona Cardinals are an intriguing team with all those weapons on offense, but they did a horrendous job with clock management late in the fourth quarter yesterday and were lucky it didn't blow up in their faces.

With about 2:25 left in the game and the Seattle Seahawks out of timeouts, the Cardinals passed on second-and-14 while clinging to a six-point lead. Incomplete. Clock stopped.

Kurt Warner completed a short pass to Anquan Boldin on third down, but Boldin went out of bounds. Clock stopped. Bring on the punting unit.

The Seahawks ended up with the football and a free timeout, with the two-minute warning approaching. Fortunately for Arizona, Matt Hasselbeck's pass was intercepted.

Run on second-and-14, and you reach the two-minute warning. Run again on third down and you leave the Seahawks precious little time after the punt. And that's assuming you don't pick up the first down.

They couldn't stop the clock. Why should you?

I remember when the trend in the NFL was for teams to split carries between two backs, keeping both fresh and wearing down defenses. Now it's become increasing popular to go with a three-pronged attack.

The Ravens do it. The Giants do it. And the Cardinals are doing it with Edgerrin James, rookie Tim Hightower and J.J. Arrington.

I'm guessing that James hates the arrangement. Just a hunch.

Here's why people don't gamble: The Steelers were favored by 4 ½ over the Chargers. They scored an apparent touchdown to take a 14-10 lead with a few seconds left - with the conversion kick or two-point conversion pending - but it was called back because of a holding penalty. So they settled for a field goal, giving them the lead, but still not allowing them to cover (which made everyone who took the Chargers very happy).

On the Chargers' final play, they lateral the ball all over the place out of desperation, fumble it, and watch Steelers safety Troy Polamalu scoop it up and ramble in for the touchdown with no time remaining. Now the Steelers are covering. Now the people who took the Chargers are breaking furniture.

After a long delay, officials determined that one of the laterals was illegal. The points came off the board, and the Steelers settled for an 11-10 victory. They didn't cover. No reason to split the coffee table in half.

(Anyone know where I can buy a coffee table? And does the name change if you're more likely to rest a beer on it?)

Now the NFL says the points should have counted and the Steelers should have won, 18-10. And somewhere in Pittsburgh, a love seat is being dragged into the front yard and set on fire.

The St. Louis Rams have been outscored, 75-3, in the first half in their last two games. I'm no expert, but that's pretty bad.

And Orioles manager Dave Trembley thought he had problems trying to get his starters through a scoreless first inning.

I keep J Castro as my one FA $igning Roch, (last blog item) , simply because he can play a solid SS & none of the others would make a difference if kept. Until they $ign a SS, Castro is needed the most from that underwhelming list.
I haven't seen many FA SS's that get me excited either. The only thing out there are some, a very few too, SPs. They need them too. Try for one, I suppose Burnett, but he is a risk. Forget Teixeira, he won't be playing here. Frankly, I think we O's fans are in for a dull & empty FA period. Maybe a trade or two gets done, but as I have said many times... point towards & look forward to 2010. 2009 will look alot like 2008 but at least we won't have to watch whiners & self overrated guys like Payton, Bynum, etc.

That NON TD by the Pitt D late smells really bad. The fix is now exposed in the NFL. Check the spread & check the news about bookies possibly losing $44+M in bets to cover IF Pitt covered.... even the Ref had a look like ... "I can't believe I have to say this".... when he tried to explain why that TD was waved off. This makes the NFL look like a better run version of the WWF.

What does the World Wildlife Fund have to do with it?

I'm not a conspiracy guy, but I'm w/ Brian on the end of the Steelers/Chargers game. They showed the replay a couple times, and I never saw an 'illegal forward pass'. Not sure where that ruling came from, but it didn't look good or sound good, and the 1st thing I thought of was 'the spread'...OY!

Hey Roch,
Did you see that Ben Davis is taking a shot at pitching? Apparently he is going to try and make the Red's AA rotation. Interesting.

With Hochuli screwing up the Broncos/Chargers game and now Green blowing the Steelers/Chargers game there needs to be an investigation.

There was also some horrendous officiating during the Raiders/Dolphins game yesterday(Hochuli again). The league's credibility is taking a beating.

The SS discussion is so depressing. The O's have had several of the greatest SS of all time.
1. Cal
2. Louis Aparacio
3. The Blade
4. Mike Bordick
5. Miggy
6. Ron Hansen was Rookie of the Year
7. Even Willy Miranda was the first O's hero.

They went through a lot of stiffs at 3B after DeCinces left (until Cal moved over), but nothing like the parade of crappy SS we saw last season.

Like I said, depressing. No matter who they pick up, he won't approach any of those 7...even Willy.

tvdpdx.... no list of hideous SS is complete without Mario Mendoza... the Father of the .200 BA....
