Izturis passes
| | Comments (32)

There's a new shortstop in town, and his name's Cesar Izturis.

Izturis made it through his physical without any problems. You can pencil him into the lineup. I'd suggest the ninth spot.

A reader asked about pitcher Tim Redding, who was non-tendered by the Nationals. I believe his former team is interested in becoming his current team. They're just looking for a cheaper rate. But he's worth debating.

Hi Roch,

Other than Huff being able to spell Mora at 3B, is there anyone else we've got to cover the hot corner?

BTW, Santa should be extra nice to next week what with all the unjustified bashing you've been taking.

Ryan Freel can slide over there. - Roch

Orioles sign Redding Nationals sign Daniel Cabrera? It's a beltway bandit special. Each player losses money in the shuffle. Both teams replaces a mediocre pitcher for a cheaper mediocre pitcher. The free market works!

Great news! And it's not a rumor...I hope.

If Chad Moeller is gonna be our catcher, I might put Izturis in the 8 hole.

The Nationals and "cheap." Words that go together like The Bengals and "incarcerated."

Roch, i keep hearing on ESPN that the orioles are going to drop out of the race for Tex. What have you heard?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's just speculation. I'm sure a lot of people are saying the same thing, based on their reluctance in the past to shell out money like the Yankees and Red Sox. - Roch

Izturis=Aparicio (can't beat that with a stick). Redding always looked above average in games I watched him on MASN,Go for him O's!

Hal said:

Wow Rock, when I first glanced at the headline,I thought you ment Izturis passed on the Orioles.I really need to get out of this negative mindset !

Ned said:

And don't forget Roch, when Freel slides over there it is not just Freel but Freel and Farney covering the hot corner.

@ Max

Oscar Salazar can handle 1B and 3B as well.

Remind me to boo Jorge Julio next time he pitches against the O's.

Don't let the bastards get ya down, Roch.

This a another bad season waiting to happen unless we get tex and when wieters comes up
We also need to get 1 of these japanese pitchers, Garland and a guy like odalis perez or redding. And a paul byrd.

Roberts
Jones
Markakis
Huff
Mora
Scott
Freel/Montanez
Izturis
Zaun/Moeller

Well we got our SS. Not much of a hitter but a good glove. Like Castro! And he gets a raise over what he made last year.

ofahn said:

Roch,

I get the sense you wanted a SS like Furcal or Hardy as much as the rest of us; however, in researching Izturis I found that the more ABs he gets in a season the better his BA and OBA become.

That being said, if you place him ninth in a lineup with Roberts batting first and Tex batting fourth Izturis could, if he shows any patience at all, have an OBA of about .375. In that lineup that’s about 75 to 80 runs. If that comes with steady and strong defense I can live with that.

Izturis-to Roberts-to Teixeira
I like the sound of that!

Hi Roch,

I have a question: if San Diego wants Olson, do you think they would trade Chase Headley straight up?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I know they really like Olson, but not sure about getting Headley in return. Really can't answer that one without knowing their front office. - Roch

Hey Roch,

I was just wondering what you thought of Buster Olney's blog post on the O's/Nats and Teixeira. It would be interesting to get your opinion. I know that at work today, we had plenty of unflattering things to say about it...

If there's an even more desperate team in search of starting pitching it would be the Nationals. If they're gonna cut a starting pitcher what does that say about the guy they cut?

eric said:

If you non tender a guy don't you have to wait until March to re-sign him? I can't see Redding waiting that long on Was.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Not anymore, Eric. They changed that rule. - Roch

Jesse said:

Roch,

If I read one more article from the national media about how the Red Sox and Angels are the only serious contenders to sign Tex, I'm going to puke. They talk about the O's like they are minor league. If I were Angelos, I'd be furious.

There are worse pitchers than Redding. He knows what he's doing out there.

Ozone said:

Roch, you hearing anything about pitching? I hear we are in on the Japanese guys, but anything else in the works?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How do you feel about Braden Looper? - Roch

marty said:

I think this is a great signing and should help our young pitchers. now if only we could sign tex.

david said:

ROCH, why couldn't we just bring back KIKO GARCIA FOR ONE YEAR ???
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My friend has a theory that the Orioles lost the 1979 World Series because God wouldn't allow Kiko Garcia to be the MVP. - Roch

Special-K said:

More importantly, was Izturis at the Ravens game yesterday?

Ben W said:

I would go after BOTH Japanese pitchers and Looper. They, in my mind, are the three that should be in the rotation to help our minor league pitchers develop, and not strand Liz/Olson/Waters, etc in the rotation.

Tim T said:

Redding is awful. And an improvement over last year's pitching.

mason-dixon said:

The Orioles signed Cesar Izturis? Big deal. It would have been better if they had signed Cesar Millan. These dogs, er, Birds, could use some animal psychology.

tvdpdx-U2 fan?? that a great song. and a great album.

West Coast O's Fan said:

I just read the Buster Olney piece on Teixeira, and I have to say I think he made some good points. Even though I would love to Tex in Baltimore, if you really look at it he is right, if you were to look at this team during the season, you wouldn't be saying to yourself, we really need a 1st baseman! The O's could spend that money on some pitching. Huff can play 1st base. We are talking about $200,000,000.00

Roch - Has there been a Looper sighting at Camden Yards? What kind of deal is Looper looking for?
