Orioles' side of the Peavy rumor
| | Comments (9)

If the Orioles are an extra team in the Jake Peavy trade, that's news to them.

From what I've been told, they haven't agreed to any deal that would allow the Padres to send pitcher Jake Peavy to the Cubs. The Orioles are rumored to be involved, along with the Phillies, with the assumption that left-hander Garrett Olson goes to the Cubs for outfielder Felix Pie.

The Olson/Pie talks are real. However, the Orioles got dragged into the Peavy rumor after Padres general manager Kevin Towers indicated that a trade was completed with the Cubs, as long as they agreed to absorb the right-hander's contract. Towers was waiting to hear back from Chicago general manager Jim Hendry.

For that deal to work, the Orioles seemingly have to part with Olson, who would be flipped to the Padres. But a team official said if the Padres announce a trade early tomorrow, the Orioles aren't involved in it.

Boo... give us something better than this at 1:02 AM eastern time! Actually I appreciate you being there and keeping us up to date... wait, that's kind of your job. Dag I'm jealous. :)

Well why would CHC want Olson if it wasn't part of the Peavy trade? I am confused. Maybe because from the Orioles perspective, its a 2 way trade.

If Pie manages to stick on the team and an improbably healthy Ryan Freel comes over for R Hernandez, would Luke Scott get shopped (how convenient if he's already in Vegas with his agent) or perhaps moved into a DH platoon, sending Huff to 1st for good if there's no better candidate? Oh, the endless possibilities. Funny thing about Freel, though, is that he could play the same multi-position role that some on the Sun version of this list were clamoring for Mora to return to in 2007 and before he caught fire in the 2nd half last year. But wouldn't everyone feel a little better if it hasn't been seven years since Freel played SS, or if he had played it well?

I've heard rumor of a Ryan Freel for Ramon Hernandez and cash deal. Any truth to those rumors?

Roch- I have got to say that I am happy and you have to take it as a good sign the way that Macphail discusses the TEX situation. I have a good feeling that our top 8 for the forseable future may just be set come April 6.
Now, we just have to grab a SS and a pair of starters.

Interesting thought. There has been NO talk lately of extending Roberts contract like with Markakis.
Now does that mean that the O's have resolved themselves to the fact he doesn't want to play here or doesn't see the team heading in the right direction?

Roch your expert analogy please?

i don't see where the O's are in any position to be giving up starting pitching, especially for an outfielder we don't exactly need.

Why do the Orioles want Pie so much? I mean I'll agree that at the moment it looks like a decent return on Olson, but given that we need SP and not outfielders it seems like we're dealing from weakness to get an area we already have strength. I mean where does Pie play? Jones is a good defensive CF, Markakis in RF, Scott's in LF, and we also have Reimold coming up (hopefully) at some point.

Does MacPhail realize that there are 28 other clubs out there besides the Cubs to deal with....? Contrary to his seemingly beliefs, Baltimore is not in the Cubs farm system.
