Redskins fall to Giants, 7-5 overall, before facing the Ravens this Sunday

The Other Side of the Ball:
The Redskins, unlike their next opponent, the Baltimore Ravens, are going in the wrong direction as the regular season enters the final month.

Yesterday, the New York Giants dominated Washington 23-7, and in the process the Redskins fell to 7-5, a game behind Dallas and Atlanta for the final Wild Card spot in the NFC.

After a 6-2 start, Jim Zorn's team has dropped three of four, with all three losses coming at FedEx Field, and they have only scored four touchdowns in their last four contests.

Next up for the Skins is Baltimore, who crushed the Cincinnati Bengals 34-3 and won for the sixth time in seven games to improve to 8-4.

Washington fell behind early and was never able to pose a threat against the defending Super Bowl champs.

Giants quarterback Eli Manning threw for a season-high 305 yards and a touchdown, and running back Brandon Jacobs, who missed last week's game with a knee injury, rushed for 71 yards on 21 carries to lead the Giants offense.

New York held Clinton Portis, the NFL's leading rusher, to a season-low 22 yards, and Jason Campbell, who didn't throw a pick in the first eight games, threw for 232 yards but was intercepted for the fourth time in his last four games.

Prior to the opening kickoff, the Redskins inducted former safety Sean Taylor into the team's Ring of Fame to mark the first anniversary of the Pro Bowlers death.

Once the game started, it was all NY. Manning hit Amani Toomer in stride for a 40-yard TD on the opening drive of the game to put the Giants up 7-0.

With rain falling all afternoon and Washington set on shutting down the running game, the Skins put eight and sometimes nine men in the box, daring Manning to beat them, and he did just that. Manning picked the defense apart in the first half, throwing for a career-high 239 yards.

The Redskins' lone score came on a 29-yard run by rookie receiver Devin Thomas on a double reverse in the second quarter to make it a 13-7 game at intermission.

Jacobs scored on a 1-yard TD run midway through the third quarter to put the Giants up 20-7, and 57 of his 71 yards came in the second half, helping New York control the clock.

Washington must now regroup and try to figure out a way to score on the Ravens, the second ranked defense in football.
