Another trade (updated again)
| | Comments (43)

The Orioles have dealt reliever Randor Bierd, last year's Rule 5 pick, to the Boston Red Sox for right-hander David Pauley.

At least the teams aren't afraid to trade within the division.

The San Diego Padres selected Pauley, 25, in the eighth round of the 2001 draft. He's pitched in nine major league games, all with the Red Sox, including six last year.

Pauley is 0-3 with a 9.53 ERA, including five starts. He's allowed 54 hits in 28 1/3 innings. You can read more about him here.

The Padres traded Pauley, Jay Payton and Ramon Vazquez to the Red Sox for Dave Roberts in 2004.

Bierd wasn't invited to spring training. When I brought up Bierd's name to team president Andy MacPhail yesterday, he mentioned how it was a "numbers thing" and the Orioles had a surplus of right-handed relievers.

They just swapped one for another.

Maybe Pauley gets dumped into that grab-bag of potential starters that I wrote about earlier today. We'll learn more once the trade is announced.

Latest update: Pauley's acquisition brings the Orioles' 40-man roster to its limit. He was 14-4 with a 3.55 ERA in 25 starts at Triple-A Pawtucket last season, and is 56-52 with a 3.92 ERA in 177 minor league games (174 starts).

Pauley obviously will be given a chance to win a job in the rotation. If nothing else, he'll be a phone call away at Triple-A Norfolk, as one of those "veteran" pitchers who could enable the Orioles to keep their younger prospects in the minors if they need an injury replacement. The idea is to avoid rushing Chris Tillman, Brad Bergesen, David Hernandez, Jake Arrieta, Brian Matusz, Brandon Erbe, etc.

As of now, this trade makes no sense to me.

I'm trying hard not to be one of those posters that complain about every move, but I'm just not really understanding some of these latest. I thought Randor pitched relatively well last year BEFORE he got hurt.

I really hope you were joking about the rotation thing, Roch. Otherwise I think my winter depression may get a whole lot worse.

looks like the O's view him more as a potential starter than a righty middle reliever

Helluva good season at Pawtucket last year as a starter for Pauley, but if the B.O. Sox aren't willing to bring him up as anything but a "waste" starter for a game or two they're willing to concede, I have my doubts that he's got the makeup of anything more right now. He's only 25, though, and could be one of those guys like Todd Van Poppel who finds his niche as a one- or two-batter setup man in another five years.

he is basicly just a right handed Garrett Olson, right?

Craig said:

David Pauley is not bad..he has been a starter in the minors for his career....Padres and Red Sox...25 years old..righty...53-46 with 3.92 ERA for minor league career to date...real decent control....had 2 brief times with Red Sox...started like 3 games one year and 2 another last couple of seasons and did not do well...I will spare the numbers...but he is blocked out there in Boston...so why not....Bierd is blocked here too...and looked good before he got hurt last year.....but at least Pauley has lots of experience in the minors as a starter...and deserves a chance like Pie does....Pauley might as well come to a team like the O's where he is really needed to see what he can do....guess he is in the mix now too right Roch?? Still have this really strange feeling that something else is going to happen....to surprise us....keep the news coming...this is fun...fun for you?

tvdpdx said:

I see he was a Eugene Emerald. If you ever get out this way, you should see a game in their little old wooden ballpark. Eugene actually had a PCL team at one time.

Other than that, hello Norfolk.

XD23 said:

I preferred Bierd. He had power stuff. He could strikeout more then a batter a game. And last year the O's saw they needed more RPs once Bradford was dealt.

Steve S. said:

If Pauley was DFA why do we need to trade for him? Couldn't we have just claimed him off waivers? What am I missing?

Craig said:

Yeah Roch...I think Pauley is more of a starter than a relief pitcher...that is what he seems to have been most of his career from the quick read and stats I just did on him...good..bring him on...lets take a look...never know....at least another guy in case of injuries...or to fill out the farm....I like the decent control and minors ERA...keep the news coming....you the man

Pauley is a nice pitcher who needs a BIG park to pitch in. Yellowstone comes to mind. He has little or no movement on his fastball.

jekyll & hyde said:

I thought Bierd pitched well last year also...before he got hurt. At least we'll have competitition this spring. Who knows...maybe there's a diamond in the rough (Rodrigo Lopez where are you?). Hopefully, some of these guys can hold down the fort until the top prospects are ready to emerge.

Tito Landrum said:

Thanks again Roch.

I like this move too. Just like the Cubs had to trade Pie, the Sox were in the same boat and had to get rid of Pauley. Bierd really wasn't going to be a factor for us, and yes he looked pretty good early on in the seaon, but Trembly was really protecting him - not many pressure situations, mostly mop up duty and such. I know he spent time on the DL, but I also think the league caught up with him as well. Somebody earlier, I think, mentioned that Bierd threw hard. That was definately not the case. Again, I think this is a good move and Pauley is probably one of our better rotation options at the moment.

Some questions Roch. Is Pauley out of options? Was he already released by the Red Sox? Will we have to run him through waivers if we want to send him to Norfolk?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Seriously doubt that he's out of options, considering he's only appeared in nine major league games over two seasons. - Roch

Pauley was let go due to roster spots. So instead of losing him for nothing they traded him to the O's. Not a big plus. Seems like the O's are replacing Olson with him. Trying to make it look like Pie for 2 minor league RPs.

Craig said:

Your latest update at the bottom is exactly right...you are....Pauley is pretty darn good really....and a ground ball pitcher for the Yard...and should help out now or like you said a phone call away...just needs a chance....and a lot cheaper than some of the other options that are free agents....wanting millions for a so so starting pitcher...think the O's are done trading or signing????

WOW- just got the news on Pie- im ecstatic...NOT!!! He has done nothing in the minors of notability, and has shown statistically to be unworthy of any of the hype the as always inept Orioles have meritted him thus far. Welcome Mike Deverauxe 2.0. one big year maybe- i hope im wrong, his numbers just done impress me. its moves like this that are turning me against the orioles, and if i cant find reason to root for the only team ive ever rooted for, then why even bother with baseball period. this team has done absolutely NOTHING worthwhile this off season (except sign Ueharra) when there was actually good proven talent outh there to obtain. not that im all for Olsen, i feel we needed to send him to the NL- he probably can be successful there because he wont in the AL east. but for this- another no-count bumb on the Os radar... gee.. hope im wrong, but i'd much rather have Montanez or Reimold or even Scott in lf.
then theres this...? why trade Bierd- he was good at this level before getting hurt, and this guy we got from Boston- i have never even heard of- and his minor league line is VERY UNIMPRESSIVE! what sense doeas either trade make?

This looks like an "expendable" move, meaning a guy the O's can drop from the 40 man roster "if" someone else is signed or promoted, without too much risk of losing him to another club. Right now He and Burres look to be the last two on the 40 man roster, which by the way has no catchers.

I doubt Bierd would have cleared waivers, at least now there is a guy who could clear and still protect the younger guys.

This trade makes sense for both teams. Pauley was buried behind a ton of solid veteran starters and Bierd wasn't going to be in our bullpen. Bierd pitched well at times, yes, but I didn't think of him as a long-term piece. Until last year, he hadn't pitched higher than AA ball (right?) and he's 24 - also, let's not forget he topped out at around 87, wasn't a strikeout guy, and gave up a lot of hits/walks. Right handed changeup experts not named Trevor Hoffman tend to get beaten around, as evidenced by his rather high WHIP and ERA last season. The fact that we were able to parlay a rule V pick one year later into a possible starter is a GOOD THING. If it doesn't work out, who cares? It's not like Bierd was going to be the Second Coming, and we've got plenty of relief pitching candidates.

terfan said:

Just because he is designated for assignment doesn't mean the Red Sox had to trade him. If he had options, he could have been sent back down. He looks more like a right-handed Waters (although a bit younger), not a right-handed Olson (who throws harder). Looks like we traded a low-grade prospect reliever for a low-grade prospect starter which seems like a decent move given our needs.

Things are looking up. The last two acquisitions were 24 and 25 respectively. Thats much more encouraging than the 38 yr olds that have been staggering in the last couple of weeks with walkers and canes.

Roch, quick question. Although I prefer your blog to the Schmuckster, he seems to answer a lot more reader questions than you. Is there a reason why you don't respond to as many reader questions as ol Schmuckie ?

The reason that I ask is because sometimes I'll find myself wondering the same thing as the person asking the question but no answer ever comes
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jason, I try to answer as many as I can, but I can't address every single question for a variety of reasons, including time, the fact that I simply don't know the answer, or I've already answered it 2,000 times. I stayed up one night for over an hour, when I was trying to write another entry for later, because every time I hit refresh, I had 5-6 more questions. I love the participation and the interest, and I'm in no way trying to discourage it, but I simply can't get to every question. And I hope people understand and don't take offense to it. - Roch

Well Pauly's stats on the major league level are inflated. But in defense of the kid, he is only 25. Not an easy thing to do to come up for a few spot starts and then go back down. I saw him a couple of times, and he pitched well for the most part. Ran into a wall and got roughed up, but not before havng pitched some good innings... I think he has some definite upside. I think if given a chance he may be a good addition and a welcomed Surprise for the O's. Good pick-up for the O's.

I think that Boston did this trade with the Orioles because they feel sorry for Baltimore.

Boston keeps bringing up all these nice young pitchers and they do well. The Orioles keep bringing up young pitchers and they suck.

Boston just figured, "Hey, we got this one guy who was good for us in the minors, but sucked for us in the majors, he has some upside so, we'll let you have him for a small price. Make you feel like your getting something; give you some confidence; set you up so we can pull the rug out from under you and laugh."

Besides, Boston likes "Bierds"...the Orioles don't: No Bierds for Birds.

Roch,
So let me get this straight. We deal Beird for a career .500 minor league starting pitcher? What the heck is going on in Andrew's head? 58 hits in 28 innings...wow! You really did good on this trade..lol
This trade makes no sense at all. Ask yourself would you rather see Bergenson or Berken up here given a shot or a retread from another organization who will not even be on this team in a year?

This tells the status of the Orioles better then any article you will read

To hear Mazzone tell it, his firing was a relief. “Once I got there and saw how they operated compared to the Braves, I knew I made a mistake the first week of spring training,” he said, before chuckling and adding, “I said to myself, ‘You know what? I done messed up.’

“The lack of organization. The lack of discipline. The lack of overall professionalism. I was shocked, and I couldn’t believe it.”

Justin Whitlock said:

We have more than enough dominant bullpen help, we need to unload anywhere we have extra to unload (which right now is basically the bullpen and maybe the outfield) to get any potential starter. Pauley has proven him self to be a force in Triple A and is simply fine tuning himself to be an every week starter in the majors. He has pitched over 150 innings several times, this something the Bierd either/or could, should, would not do. Sarfarte, Jim Johnson, Albers(if he stays in the pen), Ray, and Sherill are all lights out and fulfill anything we need out of the bullpen, therefore, if Bierd did develop he was going to get shipped, in my opinion I think we should do it while we can get a proven Triple A (3.55 on 150 innings) starter. I'm really liking Andy, loose someone who is never going to make as a starter (more than likely) and gain likely yearly All-Star, trade a solid reliever we don't need and get basically an Olson with unexplored upside.

chollie eckman said:

Geez, all this whining about a rule 5 pick up who was hurt last year and wasn't even invited to spring training? I suppose you all think we'll be competing for the AL East crown this year?

We need innings eaters this year right now. Not middle relievers.

I seriously doubt this is the end of the dealing. Go Andy Go!!!!

steve said:

The deals Andy made last year all turned out well, so I will reserve judgment until the chips fall. So far, I like all of these so far...we will see!! In Andy we trust!

Bill G. said:

Jack (iknew being nice to you wouldn't work), there you go again calling AM cheap. I doubt Pauley is any cheaper than Bierd...what's your point?

I did see Pauley pitch last year. Throws pretty hard, around the plate, nice little sinker, /but everything's about the same speed. He did get knocked around, but I was fairly impressed w/ what I saw as far as 'stuff'. Reliever for a starter...I once again agree w/ AM.

Bryan said:

Bierd was nothing special, I didn't really know if he was going to be in the bullpen or not this year. Now, we have a 25 year old, sinker ball pitcher, that threw a 3.55 ERA and went 14-4 on a good Pawtucket team in 147.0 innings. How can you not like that. He might be really bad, or turn out to be good starter. Something tells me this guy will be decent for years and hopefully we have enough talent to push him down and be insurance for our good pitchers, at least I am praying that. He was projected a #5 starter, for the Red Sox. That is an ace here :). we needed this guy even if just a filler. I would just barely rather have Olson that Pauley, although Pauley might end up being better. I would rather have Pie than Bierd by a mile. Pie is so similar to Jones and I think he will be right along side him for many years. Now with Markakis 6/66 deal, it is hard to beat the last couple days, without making huge Bedard like moves. I don't see how anyone can dislike any of those 3 moves. Exactly what we need to do. We still need to do a lot of things though. Is there any news floating around that you know of Roch, it seems like these last trades came out of nowhere, but I guess we wouldn't know about them anyway since they are not huge.

I think it is good, as it seems everything Andy does so far, not huge improvements but any small improvement is a good one. Can't see how people don't like these moves. Pie could be a star, but he will probably be nothing more then a Freel-type. That is a great risk, and if he becomes a star, everyone will talk about this move for years, I love these trades.

Herb said:

Me again. The Cubs made a good move. Pie [ pronounced p a ]if he stays should play center field. He can fly. Picking up Bradley made the trade possible. Williamson is a big young pitcher . A strike out pitcher. Hope he does well in Chicago.

Austin said:

These are young upside guys. McPhail is doing the right things. Plus, this is the second sinkerballer with control he's picked up. What do you think he's trying to say?!?

Pauley - 14-4 3.55 in 25 AAA starts. 25 year old sinker pitcher. With upside. Good control.

Pie - In 2008 batted .290 in the minors and .304 in winter leagues. In 2007 he batted .362.

Mazzone was the Flanaghan and Perlozzo regime a few years ago. I'm sure it was a pretty crappy atmosphere. THOSE days are long gone even though you apparently choose to live there. Sounds like another bitter ex-coach blaming players and team for his looking bad. Isn't it something that no one has hired this "great" pitching coach since?

Mike said:

Roch,

The Pauley trade will bring the roster to 40. When Zaun is offical someone will have to go. Is it going to be Salazar, Scott Moore, or a Pitcher?

I assume Pauley has to be on the 40 man roster since he is out of options and probably would not pass through waivers.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I seriously doubt that it'll be Salazar. And you're right about Pauley. - Roch

Pie is a good gamble, We should throw him out there for 450-500 abs and close our eyes during the inevitable ups and downs. He has a lot of upside and is worth a long look. The Markakis extension is a pleasant surprise,he is only going to get better and a solid citizen as well. Pauley 50 plus hits in 28 innings? He will fit right in. Still need to sign Garland and or Perez, both are affordable and will be an upgrade.
