Potomac Nationals Celebrate Historic Season
The Potomac Nationals had plenty to celebrate on Sunday evening at their 14th Annual Hot Stove Banquet and Silent Auction at the Hyatt Fairlakes in Fairfax, Va.
Washington baseball legend Frank Howard, April Chervenka, a representative from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington, Potomac Nationals General Manager Jonathan Griffith, retired Congressman Tom Davis, and Washington Nationals Director of Player Development Bobby Williams all joined the celebration.
The event raised over $3,100 for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington, with several impressive items up for bid.
The keynote speaker was "The Capital Punisher," Frank Howard. "Hondo" entertained the crowd with anecdotes about playing and scouting and reminded fans that the Nationals have a lot of young talent coming through the system. Greeted with a standing ovation, Howard also gave away autographed photographs and signed countless autographs for the fans.
Bobby Williams also spoke at length about the organization's plans for the future, addressing the difficult task he has of promoting promising stars and leaving fans in Woodbridge to constantly adjust to new young prospects.
Despite all those personnel changes, the Potomac Nationals still won the Carolina League Championship last season.
"It was almost two separate different teams. We had 25 guys come up and do very well, those guys got shipped out and moved up. You expect new guys to come in and fill their shows. Sometimes it doesn't work out, but those guys that came up stepped up," said Josh Wilkie, Potomac Nationals Player of the Year.
Wilkie was presented with the team's prestigious Player of the Year Award at the Banquet. He was one of only four players to spend the entire 2008 season with Potomac, leading the club in appearances with 46. The All-Star went 1-2 with a 2.08 ERA.
Wilkie also had an impressive postseason. In a team-leading four appearances, Wilkie allowed just one hit in 6 1/3 innings. He struck out six batters and walked none.
"This award means so much to me. The way I started, it was a really unorthodox signing. I signed as a free agent. I didn't get drafted. To me, I felt like all I needed was a chance. Give me an opportunity. And that happened, thankfully, miraculously. Being honored as Player of the Year, especially with the team we had and winning the national championship, it's been one of best things that has happened to me, the highlight of my career so far."
