Brian Roberts just made his first public comments since reports surfaced that he is on the verge of signing a new four-year contract with the Orioles.

"We've definitely made progress," Roberts said during the Brian Roberts report on MASN and FM 105.7 the Fan. "I hope we get something worked out and I can be with the O's the rest of my career. This past weekend my agent and Mr. MacPhail had some serious discussions to try and get something that both sides could agree on. They made huge strides.

"It's exciting to me. I've been here ten years, it's been my home and family and I really enjoy living and playing here. Guys like Nick and me want to turn this organization around and put Baltimore back on the map. Mr. Angelos and Mr. MacPhail, that's their goal."

Roberts is confident the Orioles can soon end their long run of losing seasons.

"I would have never engaged in talks if I did not think we could be competitive during the length of this contract. It's beginning to turn for us."

Roberts says he likes what he sees from the some of the position players that have already reported.

"Gregg Zaun is a good player and plays the game the right way. He loves the game. Ryan Freel just loves to play, he'll run through a wall if he needs to. Kevin (Millar) will certainly be missed, his personality and we have to find a way to continue that."
