Home run derby
Aubrey Huff and Luke Scott put on quite a power display during batting practice. They also did a nice job of playing to the crowd.
Huff and Scott took turns rattling the bleachers in right field, and often clearing them, with tape-measure blasts. Huff tipped his helmet to fans as he stepped out of the cage after his first turn, and Scott did the same later.
Not to be outdone, Ty Wigginton twice hit the scoreboard in left-center field. His first shot almost cleared it.
It's apparent that the hitters are ahead of the coaches at this stage of spring training.
Pitchers aren't throwing live batting practice today. That'll come later.
Jolbert Cabrera has reported to camp. Call off the search.
Cesar Izturis makes every play look routine at shortstop. He was backhanding balls deep in the hole, which led to the same comments from spectators.
"Do you think (insert name) would have made that play last year?"
No.
Nick Markakis still has his curly black hair. Scott shaved off his beard yesterday.

Hey Roch - Schedule question...on an 'off day' next month, meaning no game like March 3, does the team still practice and are fans let in to watch?
Great job on the blog, makes afternoons at work go by a little quicker!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks. All of days except the last one will be filled by intrasquad game. - Roch
Hey Roch,
I think I remember you discussing this earlier, but would you mind filling me in again on where and when us out-of-market fans can catch the spring training games. Will I get them if I get MLBtv.com? Thanks for the help.
Kevin
Houston, TX
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I only know the MASN schedule, which I posted recently. Sorry I don't have it in front of me, but it's in the archives. - Roch
Roch,
How did Matt Wieters look in the cage? Was he hit some balls out too?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Didn't see him hit. - Roch
Back again...I love what the fans/spectators said! It made me laugh out loud in the library at school....may I say I got a ton of weird looks??
Also Roch I love all the updates! Sounds like we have the hitting down. Can we get nick to get that hair cut soon? Also, got any pictures of Luke's beard, that I gotta see!
~Becky (your blogs are the first thing I check when I get online these days! Feel special)
Roch, how many fans would you estimate are in attendance during these workouts?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I haven't counted them, but let's just say the number is low enough that I could actually count them if I took the time. - Roch
And people want to trade Scott??
Sounds like we are winning the World Series this year
Roch,
Stop playing to these guys, they need harsh critics to keep them in line. Listen to COlin Cowherd, he went over this, this AM.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm reporting what I'm seeing, and they don't need me to "keep them in line." I'm not going to be overly negative just for the sake of being overly negative. - Roch
Joe in the Dena,
NHS is in the house! I hope Spoone makes it also. I played on the '75-'77 teams under the late, great Harry Lentz.
NHS Class of 1977
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Harry was a very close friend of my father's, and one of my all-time favorites when I covered preps for the Anne Arundel County bureau of The Sun. RIP. - Roch
To Jerry Roberson- I agree w/ you but sometimes I get so pissed a some people's idiotic blogs, I can't sit there and say nothing, but believe me I try...like someone said 'they just want to punch Jack in his wienie'
To Craig- I like what you say, but I really do have a hard time reading your entry. Nothing personal, I use... quite alot myself, but mix in a sentence once in awhile, and I'll read you all the time.
To Mitch Edison- You'll never negotiate a car purchase for me!
To cereal blogger- I sort of with you on this one. I love Brob, but I think 4/40 is a little too long, and a little too much. Congrats to Brob. What can I say except I hope it works out for everyone.
Baron- Thanks
Roch- Thanks for the great blogs. My gut tells me Arrietta is the first pitcher of the 'big 3' to get the call.
What ever happened to Dr Lewis(?) Yockum...I think that was his name. Wasn't he from Alabama also?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yocum is the other Doctor to the Stars. Believe he's California. - Roch
One thing being floated around at Red Soxs & Yankees network, the Braves could look the Orioles way for Luke Scott. Any rumblings within your media circles?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Braves are looking for a left-handed hitting outfielder and the Orioles acquired Felix Pie to play left field. It's a logical assumption. But haven't heard anything concrete in the way of trade talks. - Roch
Roch,
Do you or any of readers know Cuckoo Bird (the mean Bird) was the O's mascot? If you don't know could you ask Tom Davis. Mark Boyer and I always thought it was 1970 but now we told something else. Thanks Roch.
Dunlap
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You've stumped me. - Roch
Roch,
Pardon the pun but A-Rod said his cousin gave him "bole" and chance he's overdosing on hyperbole now.
I kid, I kid.
"Jolbert Cabrera has reported to camp. Call off the search."
LOL!
Roberts 40 mill. Should he at least do better or come clos to last year. He won't lose his house. Just come close Roberts. 2008 - 155 games, 9 hr., 57 rbi. 40 sb. Your defense will be as good. He won't lose his other house. Killer Ray needs money. Pay to his kid or kids mother and to pay to the 2 familys in Ga. excuse spelling of family--
Good to see our HR hitters doing what they do best. It's going to be a lineup with some power all across it this year.
Also, props to the players for playing for the crowd. The fans are who support them more than anyone, and therefore deserve as much recognition as possible.
I picture Huff..Scott and Wigginton doing that all year long..tipping the cap too...Izturis....he may be less talked about but he makes the IF solid...when was the last time the O's had a gold glove SS on their team...I love it...just let the weather get warmer and Markakis will ditch the curly black hair...it is hard to contain the good feelings about this team..
Roch, Do you have a intrasquad game schedule? Game Times? Thanks. See you at the park.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Don't have times, but every open date on the schedule will be filled by intrasquad game except the last one. - Roch
Bill G--sorry, I guess I am a ...nut. Should tone it down. I type so slow I out type my fingers with thoughts but for sure am a complete O's fanatic for almost 40 years and am happy of the direction of this franchise and its moves this off season.
Dunlap,
The mean bird was never an official logo, it was just one of the "moods" of the cartoon bird.
I, too, remember it from 1970. It was on a large banner attached to the stadium. The banner said, "Wait 'til THIS year!" I think it was in answer to blowing the Series in '69.
If there was an earlier occurrence of the angry bird, I'm not aware and would be interested to learn of it.
Trade Scott to the Braves??
I would trade him if I could get a 2 or three prospect return.
The prospects would have to be high level because I believe Scott is under control for awhile.
If the Braves want to talk trade I would start the talks with Scott for Diamond and Heyward.
We don't need to trade Scott...... the Braves NEED a left handed hitter..
o's seem to be doing great.i'm real happy with the o's so far!dang ANDREW is AWESOME!!!!thanks OLE PETE for the great off season
Fearthechant:
Dream on about Heyward - he is an absolute stud, and the Braves know it.
way to use the phrase "balls deep in the hole." keep that dirty mind going, roch.
