Brad hasn't been the pits
| | Comments (28)

Wow, that's bad.

Good thing Brad Bergesen was better today. He lasted six innings against Charlotte, allowing two runs and two hits, walking two, striking out three and hitting two batters.

His control wasn't up to its usual standards. He threw 92 pitches, 55 strikes. But you'd probably take two runs in six innings without complaint.

Scott Moore hit a two-run homer in the seventh to give Norfolk a 3-2 lead. The game has moved to the top of the ninth.

Any more Norfolk updates?

I just filed that one a few minutes ago. Justin Turner has two hits. Matt Wieters didn't start today. Two scoreless innings for Andy Mitchell. - Roch

I think that's very effective. 2 hit batsman is never pretty but 2 walks in 2 innings ain't bad. I don't get why you said "wow that's bad." Probably something I can't pick up haha. 1 or 2 more starts and welcome to Baltimore. What do you think?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I meant my lame title for the entry. One or two more starts might be enough. - Roch

You have to wonder if the kid didn't press somewhat because he felt he had to make an impression to be promoted. Great outting but definitely not "Bergy" like.

We have a great hitting team, speed and a great defense. I think the bullpen will we fine and can match up with the rest of the teams in our division. If we could just get "two" solid starters we could make a run at the playoffs. I would take aour 1,2,3 hitters (Roberts, Jones and Markakis over any other 1,2,3 hitters in the game. I know we are at 6-2 but realistically, we will come down to earth since our starting pitching is just not good enough. What is the time line on Tillman. Sometime late this year or next year??
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tillman will pretty much dictate this timeline. If he's dominating at Triple-A, we'll see him later this summer. - Roch

Josh said:

Thanks Roch. I actually decided to stop being lazy and went onto Norfolks website and watched the last inning on gameday. Reimold striking out looking with men on 1st and 3rd. Hope he doesn't do that when he makes it to the majors.

bergy wins !!!!!!! the main thing is his 2 hit besides the batters was 1rh and 1 lh batters . i wonder if a regular lf would been out there if he would have still gave up 2 runs ?

Brian said:

Roch, Mora DL'ed, Albers back, but what is happening with Simon & who comes up?
If I were AM, I'd bring up Liz BUT put him in the pen & keep him at 2 innings only. He could go right back down within days, when a 5th starter was needed or use him, & two other guys to give the team 7 innings as the composite 5th starter. They can get by with a small bench & 14 Ps for 10-12 days in April. It helps give them the excuse to play Pie everyday too.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's supposed to be Liz coming up, unless something changed at the last minute. - Roch

Where's Kam Mickolio?

He hasn't made an apperarance for Norfolk yet. I thought they may be saving him for a save chance, but McCrory closed the
game out today.

I assume he's hurt?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I can't remember. I'm trying to look it up. These things tend to run together. - Roch

Roch,
This kid is no Walter Johnson. He is a nice pitcher and given the opportunity may win more than he loses until he is comfortable at this level. I think people are expecting too much of him right now. He has only pitched one game above the AA level.

Roch,
I wouldnt worry about lagging behind with approving the comments. We all know you are probably the most dedicated O's employee. So take some time and spend it with your daughter. Next thing you know, she will be 21 in college and those years will be gone.

We all knew that the starting rotation that Andy put together was a joke and wouldnt last a month before blowing up in the organizations face. Eaton, Simon and Hendrickson are NOT major leauge starters...PERIOD. That is why so many people on here are so frustrated at Andy's plan A without ever talking about a Plan B.

Bergensen earned a spot in this rotation. He has nothing to prove in the minors after this spring except chancing an injury. As with Tillman and Arietta, I can see putting them down there until mid year and then bringing them up to test the waters. They cannot do any worse then Simon last night or Eaton the other night. Lets face it, we all knew that this rotation was a joke at best. Now the stats are rubbing it in our face.
The O's have a 6.20 era....WOW

And Andy couldnt have seen this coming....WE ALL DID. The time to do something was this winter by signing a "Lowe" type starter to go with Bergensen to make 4 quality starters. And then we could have patiently waited for Tillman or Arietta to surface at a natural pace. But now, instead of "we cant rush the prospects", Andy will do an about face and "all of sudden they are ready"
Watch and laugh

Thanks for guiding the starting pitching to new heights this past off season Mr. McPhail

Roch,

Who do you see starting in place of Simon? I would have to say it won't be Bergesen, mainly because I see no point of throwing a rookie in the fire at fenway, but if not him who? I know the recalled Albers and Liz. Does that mean Albers gets the spot start? That seems to make sense. Guess we'll have to see.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Could be Bergesen, Waters, Bass. Don't see Albers doing it. He isn't stretched out enough and there are concerns about putting too much stress on him early with the tear in his labrum. - Roch

Roch,
Is this Bergeson's first start? If not, what's he done in the others?

Roch,

Been a while since I posted (rest easy, I still read every single post).

A lot of us are getting giddy over the idea of Bergesen being called up (myself included ever since I attended Sunday's slaughter). I know he is a control pitcher but I was wondering if you could give us a more in depth scouting report (pitch selection, speed ranges, strengths, weaknesses)? I've seen a lot of this information on our other pitchers but nothing for him.

Thanks. Keep up the good work!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've had limited exposure to him. He has a very average fastball, but he's always been a strike-thrower. As Trembley has said many times, Bergesen's best pitch is his location. He's fastball, slider, change, curve. But it's all about location. And he works quickly and fields his position very well. - Roch

Roch, I'm a little late to the party, but I just saw the ad starring you on MASN. Incredible! They drop your name like it's Cal Ripken or something.

Don't get me wrong; I think it's great. But to watch the ad, one would think you're the biggest celebrity in Baltimore. (Hey, maybe you are for all I know. I live in California.)

Anyway, congrats!

Hafiz in College Park said:

Is there a financial cut-off day for Bergeson too? If so, that may be why he hasn't immediately been called up. Or perhaps they're waiting to see Eaton's next start. We'll see.

Anyway, I wish I had a personal Cal memory; all I have is one of Cal, Sr. when he and Vi came to one of my little league practices when I was 7 or 8. I was in Perryville's little league, which is about 10-15 minutes away from when the Ironman grew up in Aberdeen. I don't know why they were there, but I saw a bunch of kids crowding around a pickup truck, and I didn't know what all of the fuss was.

Then I found out who it was, and I asked my dad for a dollar bill. I took it to Cal to sign, and he gave be a big smile and signed it. Vi Ripken asked me "Are you going to spend it?" I don't remember ever saying 'no' to anything quite so vehemently. Cal and Vi both laughed. I remember being very excited and showing the dollar bill to my friends. Sadly, I lost it, but I'm pretty sure I didn't spend it.

Well, one thing I remember about Cal, Jr. was a baseball game I went to with my family in 1996. It was the second game of a doubleheader, and there was a big rain delay. He actually came out of the dugout in a huge downpour and signed autographs down the first base line. I had probably the best seats of my life down the third base line and thus didn't get an autograph, but what other player would have come out and signed autographs during a rain delay?

Hey Roch big news. Just saw on mlbtraderumors.com that Nady is going to need surgery and miss the rest of the season. Ofcourse the way Swisher is hitting the ball it doesn't matter plus the Yankees will just trade for some big name player. But to already lose one of their starting OFs already this early is big.

In the Sun today, Andy MacPhail is quoted as saying that the level of need at the major league level is a factor in the decision-making about who gets promoted. In case anyone wants statistical backing for the conclusion that the Orioles have been 1)lucky and 2)saved by their offense and maybe their defense too, take a look at the four teams whose opponents have the highest OPS so far:

27. Houston .900
28. Baltimore .952
29. Cleveland .962
30. Washington .969

Those other three teams have a combined record of 2-20.

I just got back from the Tides/Knights game today and wanted to give you a quick update of how the game went.

Bergesen pitched pretty good. The only trouble he got into was in the 4th. He walked the first 2 batters on 8 out of 9 pitches. The next 2 batters to flew out. The next batter hit a double to left center and the 2 batters Bergesen walked scored. Then he got the next batter to ground out to end the inning. His command was pretty much only bad in that 4th inn n the very beginning of the 5th. All other innings he was cruisin.

In the top of the 5th Bergy hit the lead off batter who got sacrificed to 2nd but then he settled down and . He came back out for the 6th and looked just as good as he did in the first 3 innings.

The only other thing about Bergesen was that of the 6 put outs and 2 doubles that went to the outfield were hit hard and ALL went to the warning track. The one double in the first hit the OF wall and the other one bounced off the warning track.

Wieters got the day off and Scott Moore crushed a 2 run go ahead home run over the right centerfield wall.

I am going to the Tides/Knights game tomorrow night and will send you some info on that game as well.

Brett

Roch, do you think Weiters not starting has anything to do with Bergeson's control problems today? It seems pitchers and cathers get used to each other's preference of pitch selection.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I doubt it. Bergesen can shake off his catcher. He's either hitting his target or he isn't. - Roch

Rob Neyer had a recent blog explaining how dumb it was for the Yankees to be playing Nady over Swisher. Nady getting hurt was actually a lucky break for the Yankees, IMHO.

Roch, if the O's brought up Pauley for a spot start at some point this season, seeing how he was out of options when he got here, would he have to be exposed to waivers again to be sent down to Norfolk?

Liz and Albers can be shuttled back and forth I believe, not that I'd want them to do that. I'd rather they stick in Balt as I like Albers in a similar role that he had last year and Liz for a couple of innings as well.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, Pauley would be exposed to waivers again. - Roch

Dear John,

You wrote "It appears that McPhail has an open disdain for the org. guys that were here before he got here."

I somewhat agree with your points on Freel, Simon, etc., but I think that you arem involuntarily hitting the nail on the head. We had an atrocious scouting and minor-league system prior to McPhail arriving, so I am not suprised as I myself had not a little disdain for the org. guys. But what you, and many other around here, don't seem to get is that when we acquire players THEY THEN BECOME our org. guys and we should back them as if they had been here forever. While it is a nice story if a player starts and ends with us, this modern sports and there are v"It appears that McPhail has an open disdain for the org. guys that were here before he got here."ery very few Ripkens and Biggios left (and it is the BEST players that get to make that choice, not the scrubs). I, personally, have no particular loyalty to players who don't perform/don't serve our needs, and hope we will trade or release them. I would much prefer the best possible players/matches that started out elsewhere than somebody we don't need or isn'y any good just because they played with us last year. Ramon Hernandez played for us last year, so did Freddie Bynum, I could go on. You worried about them?

Even though Bergesen has been deemed the "most ready" amongst the O's prospects, is there a danger of another "Hayden Penn instance" of premature promotion since he only has a handful starts at AAA?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There's always that danger, which is why the Orioles are taking it slow. But as long as he doesn't come down with any freak injuries, he should be OK. - Roch

Guess they'll use Bergy's slightly off day today to say it proves he needs more time in the minors. He was probably rushing himself to make an impression to be called up.

Can't believe the footdragging on DL'ing Simon and getting another body up here. Then again this is the slow trigger O's.
