Freel feels fine
| | Comments (9)

If the decision rested entirely with Ryan Freel, he wouldn't have gone on the disabled list. He would have taken batting practice today, and perhaps started tomorrow night against White Sox left-hander John Danks. But it wasn't his call, so he'll follow the club's instructions.

Freel said he suffered a "head trauma," but it wasn't diagnosed as a concussion. He's had three or four of those, and doesn't need to add to the list.

"I never lost consciousness. I was coherant the whole time," he said.

"I feel great. I was a little frustrated that I had to stay in the hospital yesterday. I tried to get out of there and catch the flight, but they've had a lot of head traumas over there at that facility and I think they were really cautious.

"I had a little goose egg back there, so they were kind of worried about that. Plus my previous history with the concussions, I think that had a lot to do with it."

Freel is hoping that he can talk the club into letting him participate in baseball-related activities - he wanted to hit and work out today - but he'll probably be advised to rest.

Freel said he was woozy after being hit by Justin Masterson's pickoff throw, but he didn't black out.

"I didn't want to go on the DL, but under the circumstances, with my history of concussions, I think that hurt me," he said. "And I'm sure some of the things that have happened over here in this organization, I think they take this real seriously.

"I didn't want to go on the DL, but we're short with Jonesy (Adam Jones) being hurt and whatever. I wasn't really happy with it, but I've got to do what I've got to do."

Well it looks like the Montanez call up was an over reaction, especially with Jones ok now.No wonder they allowed him to drive up.I was wondering how the injury could have been serious enough to go on the DL.

I can understand Freel's thoughts and feelings..but brain injuries are tough and dangerous...concussion or head trauma...you never know what long term effects can happen...better be safe than sorry with his history...or the O's would not have said it..

It's imperative that the Orioles keep in touch with the .500 mark, over the next three weeks, if they want to be players in the AL East. Because after that they'd get replenished in the form of Rich Hill, Wieters and even Patton. The way Zaun is struggling at the plate the O's won't have any other option, but to bring-up the budding star.

I have a pretty strong feeing that I would prefer it if Freel would just cash his checks and shut up.

i think the club is happy to put freel on the dh. anyone who starts to complain 10 days into the season needs to cool off, unless he was promised to be in the line-up 80% of the time. meanwhile the bottom third of the orioles batting order is like a mini murderer's row. except they are killing the o's. i've been a lou montanez fan since last yr and i'm hoping he gets a real shot at playing. i know nick m started slow and adam jones didn't set the world on fire when he first started, but pie hasn't shown anything at bat or in the field except for one game in texas. they should handle pie like willie mays hayes was handled in the movie "major league". everytime he hits the ball in the air, providing he hits the ball, he should have to do situps. can't wait until the 2010 season begins.

Your history of complaining about playing time and poor production probably had something to do with it too.

This guy needs to go. He's a utility guy at best, yet he acts like he is Manny. Appreciate that he wants to play and all, but get over yourself. Like someone else alluded to, void your paycask out of your contract and I am sure the O's will let you walk. I am glad he is ok.

Don't you have spell check? It's bad enough reading the poorly spelled posts of fans on message boards, but you get paid to write and this isn't the first time I've noticed a misspelled word in your blog. If you're going to write for a living, please try to do so coherently. Thanks.

btw - If you can blog in Firefox, it comes with spell check.

Wow, I didn't realize I was ruining your blog-reading experience. Here's a suggestion: Get over it, because it's going to happen from time to time when I'm cranking out a dozen or more entries a day and answering 5,000 questions about Felix Pie. Thanks. - Roch

Get used to Freel being on the DL. I'm a Reds fan and can tell you this is pretty normal. He was a fan favorite - I'm sorry O's fans don't feel the same way, but I guess if he's on the DL right away, no chance to develop a relationship.

If you all get a chance, do a google search of Ryan Freel Farney. You'll be amused...
