Hendrickson's official
In case there was any doubt, Mark Hendrickson has made the rotation.
Manager Dave Trembley isn't sure where the left-hander will be slotted. He wants to check lefty vs. righty matchups with the Yankees and Rays - the same reason he hasn't slotted Alfredo Simon.
Gregg Zaun threw in the outfield before batting practice and said his elbow is fine. He'll serve as the designated hitter against the Mets and catch Saturday night in D.C. rather than tomorrow in Norfolk. Zaun requested the change so he wouldn't be idle for two straight days before the opener.
Trembley hasn't eliminated Brian Bass as a possible addition to the 12-man pitching staff, but I'm not sure where he'd fit. Trembley said Adam Eaton's start today isn't an "audition," though he wants to see how the right-hander looks before commenting further on the staff. And there's no indication that the Orioles will eat the final year of Danys Baez's contract.
Unless a late trade unfolds, how would the Orioles made room for Bass?
Bass says he's stretched out enough that he could start if needed. He threw 90 pitches in an intrasquad game. In the meantime, he's waiting to hear whether he made the team.
"I have no idea," he said. "I'll just go out and pitch and they'll tell me one way or the other. I haven't been told anything."
Robert Andino is wearing No. 12, which belonged to Lou Montanez this spring.
Is anyone else hearing that Monday's forecast includes a 60 percent chance of rain?

Roch,
I'm just curious, but do the players all drive themselves up to Baltimore or do they fly up there? Just wondering. Thanks!

They'll fly together. Their cars are being shipped back separately. - Roch
Thunderstorms Monday, hopefully not caused by big flies off Yankee bats. Bass should make the team. He's still pretty young, has been solid and can go in long relief. The team should just admit Baez was a big, expensive mistake. I have more confidence in Bass than Sarfate even. Sarfate throws hard, but he's prone to wildness and giving up bombs. I'm not saying we should cut Sarfate, but I think we need to find a way to keep Bass. Cutting Baez is that way.
Is there anyway to put Bass on the DL? Develop a sore hammy, perhaps? That way in case (or when) Eaton gets shelled in his first 2 starts we could then send Eaton on assignment and activate Bass?
Rain should be the least of the Orioles worries.
in regards to hendrickson. dizzy dean one said..there are only two types of hitters who give him trouble. right handy hitters and left handy hitters. of course, dizzy was being funny but i think what he said is completely true in regards to hendrickson.
Easily solved situation, drop Eaton. Start Bass if they must. How soon will they need a 5th starter anyway?
Remember, they are now carrying two bench guys that can't hit (Andino & Pie). It reminds me of that year a few years ago when they drafted a guy rule 5 & had to carry him all year. A backup Inf that was cut the next year & never seen again anywhere. I can almost remember the guys name, but luckily I forgot it.
The final insult, this new guy takes Montanez's #. He might want it back in June when he replaces Pie.
The weather Roch? A 40% chance of showers , but the good news is that the high will reach a balmy 55 degrees.
Let it rain, let it rain, let it rain! As soon as they play The Boys are Back in Town on Monday Afternoon, it doesn't matter what the weather is. It's Baseball Season again. There you go Roch, that's about as positive as you'll get out of me this year.
Poor Lou, lost his number too. That is rubbing salt in the wound.
Dropped to 40% this morning. Let's hope it either hits early or hits late.
Is there anyone else who would like to see EVERY game rained out until Bergesen, Hill, and Patton are ready to join the club?
We all can deal with Hendrickson if he pitches like yesterday...Zaun got better quick..I just do not see how we could lose Bass over Eaton or Baez really..he is pitched well this spring...Montanez loves that number Andino chose...maybe they can work a trade if he comes back to the big club..I hope it does not rain....I took off work to watch it on TV from FL. It can't rain on opening day..against the rules.
Brian, I believe the name you are looking for is Morban (SS). Or possibly Bautista (3B), who's a backup in Toronto now. Either way, if you read this post I've spoiled your luck in forgetting those names and cursed you to the same worthless info trapped in your head that I have.
Roch,
I don't know that much about Eaton but from what I have seen/read/heard not real confident the AL East is going to treat him too well. Why not give Bass a shot in the rotation and dump Eaton? Bass seems to be a far better option, then we can shuffle things around when Bergy and/or others come up. And at that point we could dump Baez....I was pulling for him but take the hit on his contract and get over it. I just don't think he has any gas left in the tank.
Rain Monday?? Who's paying attention to that? I'll be there rain or shine! Can't wait, just hope they get to play some ball.
Roch,
Any update on Roberts? If he isn't ready, who plays 2nd base on opening day? Freel,Wigginton or Adino?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Roberts is supposed to play tomorrow. Haven't heard anything different. Not sure who would take his place. Good question. Freel would be my guess if he's not in left field. - Roch
Pie is not a bench player, and it remains to be seen whether or not he will hit. The Rule 5 guy you are referring to is Jose Morban. I'm sure Montanez will take any number they give him as long as it says "Orioles" on the front. I think Baez needs to not be fully recovered from his surgery and start the year on the DL. If we try to send Bass down, someone will claim him. If we try to send Baez down, he'll clear waivers because of the salary but he might get ticked and choose to become a free agent. If he's healthy, he's pretty good and he's still only 29 in a league where relievers pitch into their 40s.
It's insane to keep Eaton over Bass. This is really due to carrying an extra OF we didn't need.
Why does it aways sound like we always hear Eaton and Hendrickson saying, "I thought I did OK with the exception of.........., or I thought I did great with the exception of the curve ball I hung to.......?" Probably, because they are trying to explain away why they got shelled in a couple of their innings.
Yes Morban, I started referring to him as morbid that yr. Ardino will make us all think of him I fear. Thanks Sheets & mstrchef13
I really don't see how the Orioles can just dump Bass, he looked alright in his starts with the club late last year and how way more upside than Eaton. He has even had a better spring than Eaton. To tell you the truth I am kinda hoping Eaton gets absolutely smashed today to help push Trembley towards Bass.
That's really an insult... This organization don't deserve Lou. Trade him!
