Tragic news
The mood around here became very somber when news reached us that Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart was killed in a car crash early this morning in Fullerton, Cal.
How do you even wrap your head around this kind of a tragedy?

Adenhart pitched at Williamsport High (Md.), which is where I first met him, his mother and step-father while writing a feature about him during his senior year. Scouts crowded around the backstop to clock his fastball. Adenhart blew out his elbow shortly after the story ran, but the Angels selected him in the 14th round of the June amateur draft and gave him second-round money, $750,000, knowing that he'd make a full recovery and meet the enormous expectations that were placed upon him.
They were putting their faith in his character as much as his physical skills.
And now he's gone. At age 22.
Witnesses say a red minivan ran a red light and struck two vehicles at a Fullerton intersection. One of the vehicles, a gray Mitsubishi, slammed into a power pole, and two of its passengers were pronounced dead at the scene.
The minivan's driver reportedly fled the scene and was later arrested. Andrew Thomas Gallo, 22, faces charges of manslaughter, felony driving under the influence and hit-and-run.
Orioles manager Dave Trembley returned to his apartment last night and watched Adenhart throw six scoreless innings against the Oakland A's. His teenage son sat in the same room.
"It really puts things in perspective," Trembley said. "You don't take anything for granted, number one. Appreciate what you have. It's a real sad day for his family. I know I talked to Dennis Sarfate before I came out, reassured him. He worked out with the guy all winter, and I know one of our scouts, Dean Albany, is real close to the young man that passed away. It's not a good day."
Adenhart worked out at The B.A.T.T Academy in Glen Burnie this winter, which is run by former Northeast High baseball coach Larry Williams, while living in Canton.
"He was just a great kid," said Albany, who attended the same game at Williamsport that provided my first chance to meet Adenhart. "He was a very good teammate. He always cared about the team, always put the team ahead of himself. Just a great kid. Humble. He had ups and downs in his life after the Tommy John surgery, but he always kept his focus. He was a can't-miss guy.
"Even if you don't know the kid, it crushes you, and I had a great relationship with him. It's devastating. I watched him pitch six innings last night. He came out of the game and I brushed my teeth and went to bed, and I woke up to the phone call."
An Angels scout was on the line, delivering the horrible news.
"It doesn't get more worse than that," Albany said. "It's just very upsetting. I was calling all the scouts I know, saying how it looked like Nick had turned the corner, talking about his mound presence, how mature he was on the mound. I said the Angels had done a great job with his delivery. And I wake up to this news."
And there's no way to really make sense of it.

Horrible.
Sad news. I grew up in the Hagerstown area, close to his high school of Williamsport. I never heard anythingi but good things about Nick. No word to describe it other than tragic.
Man, life can be so tragic sometimes.
I was shocked when I saw the "Breaking News" at the top of the Yahoo sports page a little while ago. It's just a very sad day all around. My heart goes out to the Adenhart family - such a tragic loss.
It's also a shame that another young life will be lost, as I'm sure Gallo will do a lot of prison time for this - possibly for the rest of his life. All it takes is one bad decision. I hope they do throw the book at him, but it's still just very sad.
Roch - do you think they'll have a moment of silence before the game today?
roch
Just terrible news. Prayers out to his family, friends and the Angels organization.
RIP Nick. Didnt another Cardinal die a year or two ago?
Thanks for passing these remembrances along, Roch.
I honestly heard his name for the very first time today and I am in shock. Nothing this tragic to happen to anybody, especially so young. I'm 18 and sometimes it's freaky knowing that anything can happen in an instant but, I also appreciate and enjoy life to the fullest. I pray for him and his family. I hate dumb drivers, how can you think you can drive if you are under the influence of alcohol?
Awful. Just Awful
Roch,
You know I am typically a PC blogger, but in this case there are no other words than to say THAT SUCKS. What a shame......Nick had some serious talent and had a bright future despite his early struggles. Really makes you appreciate the here and now. We all like to kick a few cocktails back but please don't drink and drive. Stay home in front of the flat screen and enjoy.
My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.
Awful.... just awful. RIP Nick.
Just horrible news. Very sad indeed.
He played for my high school's rival school, about 10 minutes away from where I live. I was a year older than him, but I remember following his starts back when he was in like 9th or 10th grade and have ever since... I still feel like someone punched me in the stomach. So sad...
Thanks Roch for writting this blog and telling about your memories and others. I play baseball in Hagerstown and when the news reached the town everyone was in shock, it puts everything in perspective. There was a vigil tonight on the Williamsport baseball field that about 100 people went to. R.I.P. Nick
It's terrible that this had to happen to anybody, let alone a young pitcher with so much talent and potential.
Although I had heard of him before this happened, I was even more shocked to learn that he grew up in this area.
Just a terrible tragedy.
My thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family along with everybody else in the Angels organization and everybody else whose lives he touched.
R.I.P. Nick
