Word on Simon isn't good
When will the rollercoaster stop for pitcher Alfredo Simon?
He can't get out of the Dominican. He makes the rotation as the third starter. He has an elbow injury that will keep him on the disabled list for a long time.
How tall do you have to be to get on this ride?
Orioles manager Dave Trembley told reporters in Arlington earlier today that Simon will be unavailable for at least a month because of a "degenerative issue" with his elbow, which was revealed during an examination in Baltimore.
If it's "degenerative," you wonder if Simon will ever be right.
So now what?
I'll predict that Brad Bergesen makes his major league debut Tuesday against the White Sox at Camden Yards. Mark Hendrickson can pitch on normal rest Monday in Boston.
Chris Waters and Brian Bass also could replace Simon, but Bergesen had an outstanding spring and might be ready. There's one way to find out.
Meanwhile, Jake Arrieta has allowed one earned run (two total) and seven hits in five innings. Adam Donachie has two doubles and three RBIs, and the Baysox lead Erie, 6-2, in the sixth.
Update: Jim Hoey replaced Arrieta to start the sixth. The one earned run leaves Arrieta with a 1.00 ERA in nine innings.

At what point is it fair to start asking the question: Are the Orioles handling their pitchers in a way that is making them prone to injuries? This is a lot of injuries to the staff over the past couple of years... a little more than your normal numbers. Probably crazy for thinking of pointing fingers but this is a little frustrating.

Not sure the Orioles can be blamed for a degenerative condition. Simon has been around the block a time or two. He didn't sign with the Orioles until last summer. But I understand your frustration. - Roch
Too bad for Simon. There is no better time to promote Bergesen. Tuesday would be perfect.
What exactly does a "degenerative condition" mean? That sounds almost career threatening with that whole "degenerative" term thrown in there. Really bad luck for Simon either way.
I'm not sure I'd want Bergesen promoted to face the Red Sox at Fenway. I'd much rather have him debut against the White Sox at Camden Yards. What do you think Roch?

If it's Bergesen, it's Tuesday. - Roch
i'd hold off on bergesen and let him stay at triple a for a little while longer .bring in someone whos been here. try bass or waters.i think bass first he was in the running till the end of spring training.
I'd kind of prefer Bergesen getting some lower pressure major league time in long relief (we certainly can provide ample opportunities for a long reliever these days). But I have no idea who would start.
I'm glad we're 6-2. If we were the Nationals right now, I can't imagine how bad the personal battles raging on these posts would be.
There's our solid infield... aaarggh!!! I hate this Texas team!!
Dear Jesus,
MacPhail "always goes after bargain basement players"???? If this is true then why did he sign Markakis for six years at $66 mil and the league's MVP signed for six years at $40 million. Was the Brian Roberts signing bargain basement? How about the signing bonuses for Wieters and Matusz? What are we paying Koji and Wigginton?
The only never ending fountain of BS we see on this blog is yours and Mr. FanBase. Speaking of BS, I personally don't believe you are a high school baseball coach. First, I can't believe that it has taken you this long to share that little gem with us. Secondly, when do you coach? Seems to me you are on this site constantly.
Roch,
Why do I get a bad feeling that potentially we are going to HAVE to force our young starter's to make appearances earlier that the club wants.
Daniel Cabrera & Brian Burress would look pretty good in orange & black about now.
How does a degenerative condition suddenly manifest itself and become an issue? Wonder what it is exactly and what happened between his last start and this one that suddenly made it an issue.
Unfortunately Hendrickson can't pitch on normal or abnormal rest. So much for his dominating April stats. 10 base runners plus a HR in less than 4 innings. Start the revolving door with AAA, gonna need a lot of arms as most of us expected.
Not sure how Cabrera or Burress would help. Burres didn't even make Toronto's team and isn't even on their 40 man roster, he is on their AAA team. Cabrera has been beat up in his 2 starts so he hasn't changed.
Brummie...still think Liz has great upside and shold have been here all along?
This game is like what you get when you have a northbound train on a southbound track...but we still have a minimal chance of coming back against Texas pitching...doubt
None-the-less I'll gladly take this every third game of each series if we keep winning the first two :)
if bass blows will he gone ?
Arrgh. We don't seem to have a medical/training/conditioning staff that can keep this crap from happening to US, do we? Yes, I know it's nothing that the O's could have prevented, but add this to all the OTHER arm woes that have just happened to occur to the O's over and over and over again. And then over one more time, for good measure. It just seems... like someone, somewhere, isn't doing their job in keeping these guys healthy for the long term. Aren't there trainers/conditioning staff/medical people that get paid a crapload of money by the teams to make sure guys don't get their "frequent visitor to the DL" cards punched too often on the O's dime?
I totally should trade in my 11yrs of college for a medical degree. That final stop in art school didn't get me far enough...
Officially: annoyed.
Daniel Cabrera only gave up one earned run in his start the other day, I wouldn't say beat up. Although this club could use Hayden Penn right now! Hope Simon recovers.
Is Pedro Martinez still available?
