The Washington Nationals today selected right-handed pitcher Mike MacDougal from Syracuse of the Triple-A International League and optioned catcher Luke Montz to Harrisburg of the Double-A Eastern League. Nationals Assistant General Manager and Vice President of Baseball Operations Mike Rizzo made the announcement.
MacDougal recorded two saves and a 3.24 ERA (3 ER/8.1 IP) in eight relief appearances with Syracuse, after signing a minor-league deal with the Nationals on May 3. He pitched in five games with Chicago (AL) earlier this season.
The 32-year-old has dominated opponents during parts of his nine-year big-league career. MacDougal has tallied two 20-save seasons, including a 27-save All-Star campaign with Kansas City in 2003. He recorded 30 holds and a 4.18 ERA in 99 contests over the last three seasons ('06-08) while pitching in late-inning situations with Kansas City and Chicago (AL).
A first-round selection (25th overall) by Kansas City in the 1999 First-Year Player Draft, MacDougal's career numbers include a 13-20 record with 50 saves, 31 holds and a 4.18 ERA in 262 games (three starts).
