Outfielder Lou Montanez underwent successful surgery today to reattach two ligaments in his right thumb, but the Orioles don't expect him back until mid-September.

Manager Dave Trembley said it's "doubtful" that Koji Uehara will make Thursday's start. If tonight's game is rained out, Jason Berken will start tomorrow and Rich Hill will be pushed back to Thursday.

Berken is on the 25-man roster, according to Trembley. Montanez goes on the disabled list.

If we play tonight, and the forecast has become more favorable, we could have a "bullpen start" on Thursday. It depends on whether Uehara goes on the disabled list. That decision could be made after tomorrow afternoon's game, but it becomes complicated because Trembley would have to hold back a reliever tonight and tomorrow.

If Uehara is only going to miss one start, he might not go on the DL. If it's more than one, he'll join Montanez.

Brian Roberts' left shin is sore, but the swelling went down and he wants to play.

The Blue Jays have changed their lineup. I'll pass along the new one later.

As much work as the bullpen has been getting, and with the lack of days off in the near future isn't a "bullpen start" a rather risky venture?

Here is to a super fast recovery to a heck of a kid first and a good solid hitter second.

I hope Berken doesn't get rained out tonight. But we shall see?
I bet the attendance tonight (turnstile count) will not be 5000. During the good ole days, rain or shine, we would be up around 35-40k....doesnt seem that long ago...say 12 years? Funny how you lose track of the years after losing for so long?

Had a friend of mine from Minnesota bring up an interesting point. Andrew was critisized when he was GM there for babying starters with only 5-6 innings. Some habits never stray far I see

Glad to hear Beken will get the start tomorrow night if there's a rainout.I'm sure he doesn't want another night of tossing and turning sleep though. It's really a huge deal for these guys to make it to the majors and they don't want to blow it.It's funny some of those minor league teams have seats along the foul line with no fencing.

Anyway time for the offense to break out.

That suxs about Montanez. He really had a chance to prove himself. Healthy, I have little doubt he would have shown more than enough to be in the "plan", much more than Pie. The guy can hit & he had improved his OF D a lot. His window of opportunity probably has been closed. By Sept the FO will probably have dumped some salary, fallen in love with Reimold in LF, & only have need for a DH, if that even. Next year would be even more iffy for him it appears. I hope I am wrong & they bring him back next year.
Roch, is he out of options next year? Would he be one of those 6 yr minor leaguer types that can ask for his release to find a better opportunity?

I'd have to check. Don't know his option status. - Roch

robert said:

With Pie losing his job to Reimold do you think Luke gets some starts in LF or are the Orioles happy with him being the DH?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Most of his starts will come as the DH, just as before, with the occasional start in LF. - Roch

I thought a big reason Weiters started the year in AAA was to become familiar with the pitchers. With the promotions of all these pitchers you would think his should follow soon. I would think when they do promote him maybe they could keep both catchers seeing the way they struggled to find pinch hitters in interleague

Jeff V. said:

Nate, yea they were not telling the truth.

Weiters is in AAA until the super 2 deadline has passed. It is stricly a money move by the O's.

Was thinking over the weekend about what a nice trade it was to get Brian Bass for the proverbial PTBNL. He's been a very valuable guy. And on that subject, I wonder where the McPhail bashers will be if Chris Tillman fulfills his enormous potential and Adam Jones develops into the star he seems likely to become. The Bedard deal could be discussed in the same breath as Milt Pappas for Frank Robinson. No guarantees, but wouldn't be a big surprise at this point either.

Hey Jack, thanks for being Capt. Obvious about the attendance. Also, how convenient for you to suddenly speak of a ''Friend'' in Minnesota, couldn't make up anymore Chicago friends or stories?

Someone take this tool to the shed.

How does Berken look? Confident or like a deer in the headlights? I got my fingers crossed. Gotta watch this one.

He seemed very relaxed in the clubhouse. - Roch

Hey Roch,
I just turned on the MASN pregame show...looks like a huge crowd on hand for Berken's debut...I bet he had larger crowds at Bowie earlier this year.

david b said:

Roch why am I so nervous? This isn't our first baby bird to debut.

How are they going to make room for Scott on the roster as he's due to come off the DL tomorrow....

We don't know. Maybe Uehara to DL. - Roch

First off, I'm sure the small crowd is due to the weather. 2nd thing- how nasty did that slider to Vernon Wells look? Great pitch from Berken. Plus, he gave Millar a little chin music, which was amusing. I like his new batting stance- it probably helps him stay down on the ball a little better. Good luck to Berken the rest of the way, I hope he's here to stay!

steve said:

Nate, you took the words out of my keyboard. That's what I said on Schmuck's blog last night and didn't really bother pasting it over into here. The whole premise was that when the pitchers would graduate, that they'd be pitching to the same catcher they'd gotten used to at Norfolk. Not to be too repetitive or anything. Go, Jason!

To continue the topic, I'm even wondering if throwing to Wieters will be an adjustment for the current staff. Matt presents a naturally high target, and Zaun presents a naturally low target.

FRI-DAY!!! Matt makes his Major League Debut and on Fireworks Night nonetheless. Thanks Andy.
