Reimold's rookie mistake
| | Comments (58)

You ALWAYS remove your batting helmet after a walk-off home run. Otherwise, it'll get pounded into your skull.

Nolan Reimold gets a pie in the face after his walkoff homer in the O's win

Reimold's three-run shot off Brian Wolfe in the 11th inning completed another amazing rally and gave the Orioles a 12-10 victory.

Melvin Mora jumped up and down on his way to home plate, like a little kid who received a bicycle at Christmas. After Reimold took his beating from teammates, and they got in their licks, manager Dave Trembley gave him a firm handshake and a big hug.

Orioles Magic, indeed.

The moment wouldn't have been complete without Robert Andino delivering the shaving cream pie to Reimold's face.

Nolan is the real deal - four bombs now including the game winner! Pie who? This is a great line-up - can't wait for Wieters.

Didn't see it, but that sort of comeback, coupled with the promotion of a highly touted C for a position struggling to produce or throw out many runners, could just jump start this team to a little winning streak from here...

Ain't the beer cold!

Reimold will learn... :-)

It's not just that your helmet gets pounded in to your skull, each thump on that helmet also sounds somewhat deafening from inside the helmet. At least that was my experience playing high school ball.

Omg that was AMAING!!! Nolan Reimold for president!

Way to go rookie!!!

WOW. MASN might have to make a "defining moment" commercial about this one...

I fell real bad for all who had to work today and miss this game. Just glad I work for home and did not miss this one. Best come back I have seen from this team in a very long time!!! WAY TO GO ANDREW!!!

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! What a game! Best comeback i have seen in a while, I was scared after the Jays hit one in the top of the inning.. I haven't felt this good since Luke hit one to win it vs the Tigers last season!

Bold prediction: ROY voting - 1. Wieters, 2. Reimold

It could happen.

Chuck from PA said:

Reimold is for real. Wow, what a game. I thought it was over early, especially with Halladay on the mound. And then when the Blue Jays scored twice in the 11th, I thought it was over, but wow, great come back. Nolan, hats off (literally) to you. (I can't wait until they come to Philly in June).

Skullsville said:

Wait, wait, wait... Why isn't Reimold following the script? If we're down in extra innings with runners on, you're supposed to ground into a double-play so everyone can go home.

He's definitely getting sent back down after breaking protocol.

Rob in Va said:

Alot of stars today but having watched baseball for some time I am amazed at what youth can bring to a game and a team. This is not the same team that was on display last week in New York. A few good pitching performances over the weekend and here in the 1st two games and now today. At least for one day, or maybe one week, it is good to be an Oriole fan. Let's hope this ride continues for a while!

Caroline said:

This was as much Andino's day as it was Reimold's. How huge was he.

billb said:

Just pencil him in for left field for the next few seasons. The Baby Birds could make a run at the best outfield in the majors.

If Pie could get his bat going and could be the fourth guy out there (or Lou when he gets healthy) . . . that's a potentially great group.

Love the Young Guns starting to take over on the mound. Four rookies and Guts? Homer Like! Hill can be forgiven a few rough outings.

Greg said:

"Its time" - You were right Andy....

Wouldn't that make a good t-shirt (in orange)?

Tito Landrum said:

One hell of a game. Now what the heck is going to happen tomorrow when Hernandez get here. I'll be blown away if they actually waive Pie or Andino. I can't believe they would even be considering that.

Disappointing effort from Hill today. The is the first really bad start from a pitcher not named Eaton or Hendrickson in good while, isn't it? I know it is just ONE bad start and I swear that I'm not being reactionary here, BUT IF Hernandez, Berken and Bergeson all pitch better than Hill while Koji is on the DL, do you think there is any chance that Hill ends up being the one moved to the bullpen? I'm sure he, unlike Walker (who I know pitched well today), can get lefties out on a regular basis.

what a game!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I suppose it's possible, but I know the Orioles look at him strictly as a starter right now. He needs to throw strikes more consistently. It's that simple. Great curveball. Struggles to throw strikes with his heater. - Roch

Freaking AWESOME!!!

Couldn't stop smiling/laughing when I saw it on the gametracker sitting here at work.

Cardwell said:

OK, who's going to have something bad about this game?

Hill stinks. Why is Pie playing? Samuel cost us the game in regulation.....blah, blah, blah!

Can't you Debbie Downers just enjoy the game without having something negative to say? We just swept the Blue Jays at home on a day where we faced one of the best pitchers in the game.

I LOVE THIS TEAM! This is a great TEAM victory. I wish I could've seen it. I will be looking forward to seeing the highlights when I get home.

Looking forward to a packed house on Friday night! See all you diehard FANS at the Yard! Now gimme some of that Kool-Aid!

jeffChill said:

"Orioles Magic, indeed."

You said it, Roch. What a hard-fought victory, great to see this team come alive like that. Though I do need to ask, what the hell is Andino doing giving Nolan the shaving cream pie? If I'm not mistaken isn't he younger than Nolan? It should be the veterans doing that!

Once Wieters replaces the dead-weight .200 average catcher's spot in the lineup, they are going to be NASTY to pitch against! No one to pitch to, top to bottom!

Baltimore Heart said:

Can't wait for the replay of this one on MASN. As an O's fan, I haven't been this optimistic in years!!! Last night's game, featurning Jones, Berkin, Reimold, and Wieter's call-up, followed by this one, featuring EVERYONE. Gotta love it. Go O's!!!!!!!!

Am I crazy .... I think the O's can contend with this team?!!? Barring any major injuries, I think come August, we're going to be right there in terms of the wild-card. Man, the cool-aid tastes delicious.

Jim Carter said:

Roch,

I love to second guess the manager and to use the phrase "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

Starting Reimold everyday was working just fine (he didn't come up here to sit), then he throws Pie out there and Nolan has to come clean up the mess at the end!

It would be a lot less stressful and a lot more productive if the Orioles would relieve themselves of Pie and 2 or 3 more pitchers. The young guys are already a VAST improvement. The team just hasn't gone far enough with the rebuilding. I don't buy the fact they can't contend this year. They just don't pull the trigger fast enough on the dead weight.

Mike M said:

Holy crap, they won. I thought we were toast going up against Doc... man I wish I could watch these games at work.

Doug said:

Wow! most exciting game I've watched in ages.

Reimold unbeleivable clutch walk off. And Andino had a phenomnal game as well. When Wieters comes up this lineup is awesome.

T-Mac said:

WOW! That's one rookie mistake I'm happy to take! I'm so happy to see Reimold succeed at this level! What a win today! We have a lot to look forward to tomorrow and Friday, too! I haven't been filled with this much hope for the future since we signed Robbie Alomar!

I can't wait to sit back, relax, and smell the development happening the 2nd half of the year!

Realist said:

Yeah that was a rookie mistake. He comes up big again. Hits from everyone but the catcher position. I feel that is about to change. I too believe Zaun should be sent. Zaun's attitude doesn't fit well, especially batting .208 or whatever. Let's not say they called a good game either. We gave up 10.
Horray for us!!!!

Birdfan from Birth said:

So, if you look at the hits column in today's box score, imagine what a hitting catcher could do in this lineup. Anybody got an idea of where we could find one of those...?

Matt said:

What a game Roch! I can feel it, things are changing for the Orioles for the better. From Nolan to Adam to Nick to eventually Wieters and Snyder, the foundation for an incredible lineup is within reach. And then there is the "cavalry" which will be arriving soon. It feels great to be an Orioles fan! Go O's.

Thank you Nolan. You made me forget that brutal loss to Barca....

The difference between Reimold and Pie is astounding. All the Kool Aid drinking Pie apologists love to point to Pie's "awesome" minor league stats. But in the majors Nolan seems to have made more progress in 13 games than Pie did in all the previous games.

Where's your 5 tool player now Pie eaters? Still celebrating that single?

Ole Brummie and Jack both said that calling up Reimold would " give this team a legitamate chance to win games" and guess, what? We were right again.

BMS: Hill sure looked "sharp" today wouldn't you say? Another outing like this and he can pitch for one of those 2 extra teams you think play in the majors.

adam b said:

Huff pounded on the rookie. I hope he can still play tomorrow.

Joel C said:

Way to go Nolan! That is one of the more exciting wins in recent Orioles history. Glad to see the plan kicking in gear. Hill had a rough start but we will see what happens with him. We still got the youngsters coming behind him if Hill doesn't perform well.

Roch, how 'bout them O's? Fantastic comebacks. Shows heart. Did you hear MASN pick up what the Toronto pitcher screamed after Reimold's homer? LOL! Priceless.

I was wrong when I said that the bottom of the order would go 0-12. I was dead wrong. Andino stepped up big time vs. a monster of a pitcher.

Why did Halladay get removed? Too many pitches? I did not see that portion of the game. I was actually took a nap from the 4th inning to the 8th, just figuring that it was a loss given Halladay was out there with a sizeable lead. I woke up and it was 8-5 with the bases loaded an one out. The rest is history.

just thought i'd throw in that people have been giving andy mac too much flak recently. i don't see how else you could have done a better job than he has.

bedard for 5 players? who could really pull that off, especially getitng mariners top 2 minor leaguers at the time and their best matchup relief guy.

tejada for 4 players? the day after he got traded his name was included in the whole balco thing followed by his age problem. getting roster fillers in albers/sarfate/scott was great, and patton is looking like a solid starter

not overdealing for teix? turns out he's just another money driven hometown hating nobody. we don't need him and the money will be well spent elsewhere

most of the complaints are about the starting rotation, but what would people have liked, overbididng for burnett or wasting money on other starters like garland, looper, etc.? its just a waste, you cant simply buy talent, hasn't been working for ny last decade, you gotta build it. our drafts have focused on pitching, and quickly we have stock piled depth in the minors

our AAA team is dominating, which is a wonderful sign

we no longer sign bums like jay gibbons to 20 million dollar deals, give out free money to old raffy, or sosa. yea pie was a biased cubs opinion, but his talent is worth a shot, and we always meant to have nolan or lou have left field anyway.

i'm on your side andy, this team was absolutely miserable with no direction a few years ago. it has a direction now, and it's exciting. long term goal was always to compete come 2010, 2011. if the minor league pitching prospects turn out to be garbage, then its on him, but right now, i cant see how he could have done a better gm job while being smart with the muns.

oriole magic, feel it happen

You mean like how they Baez gave up those runs?

Roch, those are great shots of you in your MASN commercial writing, blogging, and showing #46 how to throw a curveball. Who is #46?

Great, great game today. Roch, I hope you realize how much pleasure your efforts bring to us. We're deeply in your debt. Thanks.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That's awfully nice of you to say. Thanks. As for your question, that's Guthrie, and he's actually showing me how to throw it. Are they still showing that ad? I hope I haven't aged too much in the last year. - Roch

Nate said:

Hey Roch,
Do you believe that this is the type of play that we will be seeing a lot out of Reimold in the future? In the past 8 games he's hit four home runs, what's even more remarkable is that he has four home runs in 13 games as an Oriole this season, that's 1 every three games or so. How many HR's do you expect to see Reimold get this season? Take care
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He's breaking Bonds' record! OK, I'll settle down. It's probably too soon to start projecting HR totals, but it's still fun. Pitchers haven't seen him. They'll start to adjust. And he'll have to do the same. I'm just impressed that he had a few poor at-bats and still hit a walk-off homer. He looks like he might get a little pull-happy at times, but he's got impressive power. And he's only going to get better. - Roch

Andrew said:

Roch- You gotta love what has happened in the past couple of days. The O's are winning and the calvary is on its way! Nolan has REALLY stepped it up, and so did Berken, hopefully Hernandez K's about 12 tomorrow!

Tracy said:

That was just the sweetest comeback to witness first hand! At the time the ball left the bat I was just stoked that Nolan drove something deep enough for Melvin to score and tie the game again...when I saw it actually go into the first row of seats I started bouncing so hard I almost fell out of my seat and onto the field.

That one was SWEET, thank you Nolan!!

rick said:

amazing comebacks by the O's. It's gonna be a fun 2d half!!!!

Wow, indeed! Way to go Noland. That's a win we won't forget for a
long time.

Mike M said:

Man, lots of anti-Pie comments here. In case anyone saw, Felix nailed (the speedy) Alex Rios at the plate in the first. That prevented some runs big time, in case anyone is interested. His defense alone should keep him on the roster as a fourth outfielder. I have to admit, Nolan's bat is ridiculous.

amarie said:

Roch,
Games like these must make covering such an historically craptastic team much, much, MUCH easier. Of course, not as easy as a frothy cold beverage while watching said game, but easier nonetheless, no?
(And who snuck into the English language and began using "an" before the word "historic"? I mean, I skipped a lot of school like everyone else, but I'd have remembered questioning nonsensical things like this.)

Peter said:

Matt Wieters' tears may cure cancer but Nolan Reimold's tears cure swine flu...

I'll take Reimold for ROY with Wieters a close second.

Lisa said:

Yes, "Melvin Mora jumped up and down on his way to home plate, like a little kid who received a bicycle at Christmas," but you forgot to mention that he SKIPPED the last 30 feet.

Gersh said:

Hey that was my commercial after Nolan got the pie in the face on this posting! Quite appropriate since this game was similar to that one in that the O's made a big comeback against a division rival, fell behind in the 11th and still came back to win. The thing that makes this one better is that the guy with the game winning hit is going to be an Oriole for many years, not one of many shortstops in a revolving door. I do expect to see a commercial for this one too (agree with you Lindsay). Hey MASN, I'll come down to Maryland and do another one! :)

Gersh said:

Wow I just realized after I posted before that it is exactly one year to the day when the O's won that comeback against the Yankees.

Dutch said:

Brummie, 2 weeks does not make a career. Reimold still has a lot to prove. as does Pie. I wouldn't assume either is going to end up where they are as of today.

And while you are bashing those that supported Pie where is your mea culpa about ANDREW??? So, the Pie supporters (perfectly appropriate IMO, given his scouting reports and AAA numbers)were 100% wrong but your criticism of ANDREW, the man who has really made a difference, is still legit? Wow.

And that joke you made about you and Jack being 2 different people was pretty clever. hahaha. You're quite a bloke.

Go Reimold!!! Go Orioles.

MATT said:

SKOOOOOOOOOOOOOO WEEEEEEE!

Awesome win, but I do have a question for you Roch. Is there any protocol as far as who delivers the shaving cream pie? It just seemed strange that Andino got Reimold; might it have something to do with his 4-5 day?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That might be it. He was probably as excited as anyone. He's part of the 25-man roster, so anyone can deliver the pie. I just wonder how much that stuff stings when it gets in your eyes. - Roch
