The Orioles have optioned reliever Bob McCrory to Triple-A Norfolk and will call up outfielder Nolan Reimold tomorrow.

Dave Trembley talks with the media after the O's 8-6 loss

Manager Dave Trembley won't know how he'll use Reimold, who's batting .394 with 11 doubles, nine homers, 27 RBIs and a 1.128 OPS, until he checks on the status of Luke Scott and Adam Jones.

It'll be interesting to see if the Orioles make another move, since they're now working with an 11-man pitching staff. But they can't afford to fly to Kansas City with so many health issues among their outfielders.

Rich Hill could become the 12th pitcher this weekend. It's a possibility.

Trembley said the decision to option McCrory was made during the game, and had nothing to do with the reliever's poor outing tonight.

FINALLY!

You heard it here first. Dempsey says we are calling up Nolan Ryan.

Woohoo

Brian said:

I'M SO HAPPY THEY DID THIS. Really I jumped when I heard they made a move and jumped higher when Dave said his name.

Bill In Elkton said:

Roch, This is cool. I've been waiting to hear this news. Well the calling up Reimold part. Last year in spring training I was a Bob McCrory fan. It's a shame, but I hope he can figure it out and be back here.
Thanks for keeping us all informed Roch.

Jason said:

I'm very interested in hearing Trembley's response to the reasoning behind leaving McCrory in the game.

Utterly cluseless managing on Trembley's part... Disgraceful and minor league coaching material.

Trembley should not be managing this team beyond this season.... PERIOD!

Meghan said:

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Finally!

Ray said:

Put Reimold in left field and leave him there.

Sudhir said:

Carlos Pena on third base with one out and infield in; 3-0 count on Willy Aybar and Dave Trembley orders an intentional walk to Aybar. It'd have been much wiser if the Orioles had pitched out - just in case the Rays had any thoughts of squeezing-in a run.

Your thoughts on it, Roch.

And what kind of infusion did Pie get at the hospital last night?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Don't think there's much to second-guess there, to be honest. How often do you see a squeeze play? As for Pie, he obviously handles food poisoning a lot better than I do, though I also continued to work - just not as productively. - Roch

Cheyne said:

Isn't the whole thing that if Reimold came up, he'd have to play?

Chuck said:

I have a feeling either Jones or scott go on the DL in order to bring up Hill. Once they are healthy again, Pie gets sent down, most likely.

Adam said:

Reimold sounds amazing. I cant wait to see this guy. Hopefully he'll get some good playing time, I want to see him. Our offense could need a boost.

Jason said:

Will you be posting his post-game news conference video? Thanks.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I won't, but somebody at MASN will. Not my department. Check the media lounge later. - Roch

Ryan said:

Roch- Heres a hint.....put him and LEFT AND LEAVE HIM THERE UNTIL THE THE O's ARE IN THE PLAYOFFS or hell freezes over.
Lets get this show on the Road.
Weiters is bored. I truly think that is the case. He is malaise.

steve said:

Mike, Reimold's not even in town yet and Dempsey is saying Nolan "Reim," or something like that.

I join the chorus in being glad it finally happened. Injuries are part of baseball, and it looks like we were prepared.

Dave said:

I agree with Ray. Put him out there and let him show what he can do.

Bryan said:

I'm in the minority I guess but calling up Reimold is a bad idea. Bring up Salazar instead. You don't want to waste the kid on the bench. If they are done with Pie start Montanez in LF. He's played well lately and bench Pie. Let Reimold get his swings at Norfolk. Re-evaluate in July.

Barry said:

I think both Scott and Jones are headed to the disabled list. Let them go there and heal. Give Montanez, Pie, and Reimold opportunities. Only good will come of this.

Jared said:

I am excited to see Reimold but I am with Bryan.

We never really gave Pie the chance we said we would and we havent put him on waivers. Lou hasn't really gotten his shot either as they said he would get. Now we are giving Riemold a chance. They say Scott is day to day. So when we have Pie, Lou, Nolan and Scott who all need to be playing every day, how are they doing that with 2 spots...

Roch?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's possible that Scott goes on the DL. We'll see. Reimold is here because the bench would be too thin in KC. Not sure how it'll all shake out yet. Glad I'm only paid to write about it. - Roch

Iowa O's Fan said:

I've just made an executive decision- I'm headin' down to KC to see Nolan's ML debut tomorrow night. About a 5 hr drive down I-35 from up here in north Iowa, but I'm already looking forward to it.

I Am The Plan said:

I agree that either Jones or Scott will have to go to the DL to make room for Hill, probably on Friday night to buy as much time as possible, or else Montanez will be sent down if he continues to suck at the plate and those two turn out to be healthy after all.

Hendrickson will have to move to the bullpen tomorrow in anticipation of Hill joining the team on Saturday. That way they retain seven relievers and do not have to be short in the bullpen. As for sending Pie down, uh uh, he has no options. Why do people forget that?

Furthermore, if people had been paying attention, they would see that Pie has looked much better lately. He would have won the game tonight if McCrory had not been so putrid in the ninth inning actually. Do not let reality get in the way of good old hatred though.

Orange Juice Is Not Kool-Aid said:

Fans of Montanez better wake up. He went 0-for-4 tonight and is now batting .220 since being called up.

Reimold will start in LF and Pie will start in CF if Jones has to go on the DL for the next few weeks.

Reimold will start in LF and Pie will go to the bench if it is Scott who they have to put on the DL.

Montanez is going to be a fourth OF, pinch hitter, and occasional DH for the next two or three weeks.

Barry said:

Where are all the commentators who revel in making fun of Felix Pie, using 7th bathroom humor, call him cartoon figure names, and show an unhealthy fixation on him as they did with Freddy Bynum and Jay Payton?

I suppose it would be too hard for them to say they appreciated that the guy stepped in when he was sick and played well. For them, he would need to go at least 3 for 4 every day and play flawless defense. But, probably, that would not be enough.

When Pie made an outstanding catch to end the game against the Rays last week, we heard guys on this blog belittling his effort because they said he got a bad jump on the ball.

That's scapegoating, Roch. I'd like to see you speak out against it.

The Mythical One said:

Well let's not forget how many names Jim Palmer gets wrong. In the whole Texas series he couldn't get Saltalamacchia's name right.

Last night he called Aki Imawura, "Akinori Eemaweema"

Then there is Gary Thorne with, "Arburry Huff," and "Dennis Safarty."

I can understand getting the visiting teams' names wrong, but the home team? Why?

If this is anything like the MASN commercial, these guys should be sent to the minors, right?

stevO's said:

If Reimhold plays in left, what happens to Montanez? When Jones comes back, what happens to Pie? If you count Scott and Wiggington, that's FIVE left fielders. What a clusteryouknowwhat!....Roch, is it possible we could trade any of the above for pitching? Showcase Pie in center for 2 weeks? Reimhold probably has the highest trade value. Or do you start Reimhold, keep Scott and throw the rest out on the scrap heap? Or do you send Reimhold back to Norfolk, showcase the others to trade later this year? What would you do? I would send Reimhold back to the minors....keep Rochin!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jones hasn't gone anywhere. He's just day-to-day at this point, so not like he requires a corresponding roster move. Pie won't get two weeks in CF if Jones doesn't go on the DL. I don't count Wigginton among the LFs. He just played there in an emergency. - Roch

bumblebee said:

Strategically, here's the dilemma: Can't give up on Pie yet, Montanez deserves a shot, and Reimold has demanded a shot.

For the next few games it should be ok. Rest Jones and Scott. Put Pie in CF, Reimold in LF, and DH Montanez.
If Jones or Scott have to go on the DL, that buys another 15 days to experiment. LF could be Reimold's to win now.

Once both Jones and Scott are back, a decision will need to be made to keep 2 of the 3 rookies.

Thanks for the updates Roch. I never visit Orioles.com because of you. LOL.

Mike M said:

For all the Felix Pie haters out there, keep in mind that he's out-homering David Ortiz, who hit 54 homers as recently as 2006.

Basemonkey said:

I just wanted to say that McCrory is a pretty good arm. He didn't show it tonight but he's only a victim of the learning curve we've seen every young pitcher we've seen who comes up. Throw strikes, young man.

All of that being said, McCrory is one of the less heralded arms in a system rich in pitching. If he's one of the least hyped, that's pretty good. There's no pretty way to learn this lesson for young pitchers. The only thing the club can do is reward the Bergesen's because they're throwing strikes, and, demote the McCrory's when they don't. That sends a message. The other arms are listening.

tvdpdx said:

Here's hoping he gets something other than #60.

Tim in CA said:

Like everybody, I'm extremely happy to have Reimold joining the club.

When the roster situation clears, however, I believe Montanez should be sent down. Pie should definitely not be put on waivers (he won't clear)!

At this point, especially after Lou's 0-4 today and Pie's 2-2 with a HR (with food poisoning no less!), the statistical difference between their offensive numbers is negliable, and almost non-existent because of the small sample size. Meanwhile, they are a wash defensively (although Pie may actually be better because he has more range), and Pie has greater speed. Moreover, Pie's ceiling is higher because he is only 24, and Lou is 27.

With all that Reimold has done at AAA, he should get the chance to play everyday, or close to it. Pie should continue to back up, get a start once or twice a week. You match them up against righties and lefties. At some point, one of them will win the position outright (my money is on Reimold), and the other should be the fourth outfielder. Because of his age, Lou seems to have a lower ceiling than the other two.

At this point, Lou and Salazar are no longer really in the prospect age-range. They're clearly dominant at AAA and capable of playing at the MLB level, but it is doubtful that either will be a game-changer at that level. Really, they serve us best being at AAA when they are not needed, and getting the call-up when somebody goes down. If an infielder gets hurt, Salazar should get the call, and if an outfielder goes down, it should be Lou. It's possible we could trade them, but they might have more value for us serving in this role. Over the course of a long season, it is almost certain that both will be needed (such as now).

People that want to drop Pie are being too impatient. With the new set-up, we would have a bench consisting of Pie, Andino, Wigginton, and Zaun (once Wieters gets called up), which I think is pretty solid (we're talking about an American League bench here). It gives us good defense all around, righties and lefties, a bit of pop (Wiggy), speed (Pie and Andino), and even some youth.

Those are my two-cents. I look forward to Reimold's debut with the club!

Brummie_Oriole said:

While I am glad Reimold is FINALLY being called up, it's sad that Andrew is only making this move due to an injury. If everyone was healthy, Reimold would probably rot in the minors another few weeks.

Once again Andrew is a defensive GM. He will not be pushed into anything. Why make a roster move to replace a terrible LFer with a decent minor leaguer when the status quo can remain intact? The situation has to be extremly dire before Andrew will make any kind of move.

In other words, unless Zaun develops some west African virus, don't expect to see Weiters up here anytime soon. Unless Eaton trips over "pitching for dummies" book and hurts himself, don't expect to see Tillman or Hernandez up here.

To think if Simon was still healthy, Bergy would still be down at Norfolk.

WAY TO GO ANDREW!

BRUMMIES BOY said:

The heat has finally gotten to Andrew and he had no recourse but to finally call up Reimold. Now watch him go 4-for-4 with 4 homers in his major league debut tonight. Andrew will then have the eggs of arrogance all over his face for taking too long to do what should have been done in spring training. Lou and Felix are pubically on notice too. Jones will likely head on the DL. A hammy is nothing to dilly dally around with as Mora found out a few weeks back. Take a break, rest it, and come back strong. Whoever is scuffeling the worse between Lou and Felix will be cut down when Jones gets back because Reimold shall immediately become the new mug of the franchise. A real plan is now developing, but only because Andrew had his hand forced, not because of any ingenious thinking.

Excellent news. Really looking forward to what Nolan can do in the majors. This is a good opportunity for him to get some MLB experience and show the doubters (Bryan, et al) what he can do for the O's.

No offense to Bryan but if you've looked at Reimold's box scores (http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?n=Reimold%2C%20N%20%20DH&pos=&sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=460099)you can't leave that in AAA. If it can help the club now then it's the best thing for the team.

No sense in wasting time. And he was getting called up June 1 anyways, no one gets a July call up.

tremley lost another game for the orioles again!! why did he leave mccroy
out there like that??? i could manage the team better. we have no one
else in the bullpen??? evidently, he has no faith in his offense. i have
said this before he doesnt know when to pull or who to replace pitchers.
what ever happened to the saying play for today and worry about tomoorrow
later??

Ryan said:

Roch- The main thing with Reimold is the BB. He has an eye like Markakis. He has 6sb. He makes gamesaving plays in the outfield and has a cannon.
You are already seeing Lou struggle. That might be because of inconsistent playing time. Pie might actually be better as a backup outfielder that can play all three spots and pinch run and stuff.
But, Reimold MUST play everyday.
We have to remember that Scott is nearly 30.
Hopefully, they don't fart around, and our outfield of the next 6,7,8 years and beyond is done.
Its gonna be enough to worry about who is gonna play 3rd base next year and beyond. Wigginton makes the regular plays, but doesn't have the range and arm to make the highlight ones.
I wish Henson would light it up in the minors, but, hey. I guess when they signed Mora to his extension, they envisioned Rowell taking over at some point. Thats done now.
Is Snyder effective defensively at 3rd? I know he wants to play it. He sure can hit.

Ray said:

It's great that most of us here are caught up in the excitement that Nolan Reimold has been recalled. Let's remember that he's going to face, assuming he's in the lineup, Gil Meche and Zach Grienke in his first two games in the majors. I might just sit him vs. the latter. Sort of like protecting the young guy, but Dave's not very good at that. Need examples: Radhames Liz first appearance this year was with the bases loaded. McCrory pretty much the same.

Last night he hung McCrory out to dry in the ninth inning. Walk, walk, walk, single, single, single and suddenly a very manageable two run deficit is six. We only needed one out to get out of the inning. Baez, JJ, Sherrill anyone? Are we supposed to believe that there's not one reliever here who can throw on back to back days? That's not how Joe Maddon managed in this series. He had his better relievers out there on Tuesday to try to hold the deficit and last night he used one pitcher who had gone the night before and had another up in the pen.

I'm in agreement with Shuan and Jason who suggested that DT basically gave up. The camera showed him a couple of times in the ninth inning and he looked like the dead guy in "Weekend at Bernie's". Trembley had to know that Percival was coming in to pitch the ninth. He hadn't pitched in how long before last night? Foresight, would tell someone with intelligence that he may be rusty and we had a good chance to score some runs. The team just ended a 4-3 homestand which easily could have been 6-1 with a litlle effort and creativity on the part of our manager.
