Sarfate gives the finger update
| | Comments (18)

Dennis Sarfate told reporters that he began losing sensation in his right middle finger during the sixth inning, after he replaced starter Mark Hendrickson, and alerted the training staff.

The finger started getting "cold" again in the seventh after he retired Vernon Wells on a ground ball, and he eventually came out of the game after surrendering Adam Lind's home run, walking Scott Rolen, striking out Kevin Millar, allowing an RBI double to Rod Barajas, drilling Jose Bautista and missing high to Marco Scutaro.

Sarfate said he never experienced numbness in his finger before tonight. He shook his hand in an attempt to get the blood flowing, but it didn't work.

There's no way to know tonight whether this is a DL situation. Maybe the numbness doesn't return. But you have to wonder what caused it.

Is there a doctor in the house?

If only he could pitch like Rollie Fingers.

Hey Roch...if Scott Erickson was on this team, would he be allowed to throw more than 100 pitches? I remember him throwing 125 regularly and going deep into games. I hate that MacPhail believes so much in pitch counts. Sometimes, you just have to leave a guy in there, regardless of how good or bad he is doing. Its not like half of these pitchers are going to be will be with the team next year anyways...there are too many young guys ready to go.

Hendrickson, Eaton, Sarfate and Bass' days as Orioles are numbered. Either they man up and pitch well, or they are going to get shipped out or demoted. I just hope that ray finds it again and keeps it up for more than a couple appearances. The O's need him to be a closer so they can deal Sherrill and open up space for Hernandez or Albers or someone who can effectively fill that bridge role for the 6th and 7th.

I'm all for not rushing prospects but leaving Reimold in AAA is just silly at this point. He isn't going to be any hotter in his whole life so why not let him come up now and unleash him on these guys. Montanez can go back to Norfolk to try and increase his trade value and we can trade/release Freel when he comes off the DL. It's not like Reimold is all that young and he spent 2 years at Bowie (even though 1 was injury shortened). The Dude Is Ready!

Roch- Whats the record for most losses in a season? This staff is that bad. I think Uehara will be consistent, and the kids will show moments of things to come, but you are seeing what happens when you are a losing team. You lose 9-2 9-5 9-7 then you finally get a good start and you lose 2-1 or 3-2.
Thats how it happens. Hendrickson is just plain terrible. How can you be in a major league rotation with a 350 BA against? I mean, I am speechless that these guys are on our team. Adam Eaton has NEVER been even a medioce pitcher. I just don't understand what they are trying to do this season.
It is a total slap in the fans face to not at least go for someone with a little history of success if they were not planning on calling up some youth. Oh well.

Roch- One last thing, did you notice how even when Halladay was in trouble late, Gaston did not pull him? I know its Halladay, I get that, but...the point is still clear. Trembley uses way to many pitchers. He expects to many relievers to be good on any given night. It just ain't gonna happen.
Sounds like the Pie experiment is coming to a close. 30 games was all it took. That is also sped up because Nolan is a monster and never should have been sent to Norfolk in the first place.
Oh well, at least we have 1 extra year before free agency.

Honestly its 2:00 am and i can still count on you to come home to haha....on a serious note, who do you think may/would get called up?

My buddy and I have been debating which pitchers we will see this season. I believe we will see David Hernandez in the pen, Hill and Patton in the rotation.

What are your long term thoughts on this season? Which prospects do you think we will see in camden yards this year?

I think we'll see Hernandez, Tillman and Patton at some point. Don't know when, but they're coming. - Roch

There will be a lot of middle finger updates after games at the stadium if Andrew doesn't do something to repair this train wreck he has created. Fans don't want excuses. We want wins. Signing all these cheap NL rejects from his former Cubs team and denying true talent like Salazar, Reimold, Liz, and Berkin their true place on the Orioles is disgraceful, but it certainly saves a lot of Bull Rock's greens fees for Old Peter. Andrew should have signed Pedro, Lowe, and Kawakami to give the team a more solid rotation than anything Simon, Hendrickson, and Eaton will ever dream of producing. Now, just as I said, Millar ate the Orioles pitches for late evening snacks Friday night. There will be more carnage all weekend as Andrew's weak rotation serves up meatball after meatball to Canada's Team. Not a competent plan at all, Andrew, so it's time to go back to the drawing board again.

Shouldn't that be "Sarfate's finger gives!" or maybe "Sarfate's finger gives him (and the O's) the finger"?

I'm not a doctor (though I tried to play one with a girl named Becky in the 3rd grade), but it could be possible that his problem is not circulation but nerve damage. I have a light case of carpal tunnel syndrome (meaning that it doesn't keep me from posting on blogs) that causes my fingers to go numb at times, though it's usually me thumb and/or pinky.

On a totally unrelated topic, I'm on travel in Japan right now for my job, sitting in a hotel room watching the Chiba Lotte Marines play the SoftBank Hawks. One of the Marines' players got his 1500th hit (a double). They stopped the game for a minute and two scantilly-dressed girls came out and delivered a bouquet of flowers to him at 2nd base. I'm kind of disappointed that the girls took the flowers back with them to the dugout. It would've been cool to see him try to score from 2nd, flowers in hand... ending in a collision at the plate, petals flying everywhere...

There is no where to lay the blame of this recent slump but on Andrew's doorstep.

Another loss, another poor outing by Hendrickson. But Andrew thinks that Hendrickson and Eaton are qaulity starters. And when he see's the bloomin obvious, he will call Hill up so we can watch him get shelled for six or seven outings.

Oh wait, this year does not matter. It's all about next year. But wait, young guys take a year or two to adjust, so forget 2010 as well and maybe 2011.

Here's a suggestion: Call up Tillman and Hernandez. Put one guy in the rotation and the other in the bullpen for the time being. Dump Pie and call up Reimold. Let them all learn on the job. Who knows, after a few games it might start to click with them.

The Marlins seem to have no problem calling young guys up. Maybe the O's could follow suit. Or better yet, maybe we could hire one of their front office staff to replace Andrew. They seem to be competitive every year with top minor league prospects getting their chance in the majors.

If we are going to rebuild, fine, but staying in neutral while promising us that better things will eventually come is just smoke and mirrors.

Futility is not an excuse Andrew!

There is a minor league short stop from my hometown who plays in the Giants organization that had trouble with numbness in his middle finger. The doctors blamed too much chewing tobacco and diagnosed Viagra to help with his circulation problem.

Bobby Valentine is the manager for the Marines. Otherwise, I don't recognize any of the other gaijins (foreigners).
