Tillman update
| | Comments (38)

So you thought he was being called up to the majors?

Psych.

According to a member of the Orioles' public relations staff, Chris Tillman left tonight's game at Triple-A Norfolk after two innings with tightness in his groin.

I know that's disappointing news to a lot of fans, but at least the injury isn't serious. He came out as a precaution.

It would have been an abrupt change in the organization's thinking if Tillman was being promoted as Adam Eaton's replacement.

So I'm guessing it's nothing serious. Oh well, I thought it may be rushing him anyway. So who starts on Tuesday?

bms said:

no comment lol. I'll still take Berken.

Tracy said:

Glad to hear it's nothing serious...and while I didn't get my hopes up that he was getting the call up it was still fun to think about for a few minutes.

Now how much of a major let down is it going to be if Waters or Pauley get the call over someone like Hernandez or Berken?

PantlessReader said:

Maybe there is some common sense in this organization after all. Don't rush the saviors... call up the polished.

Now paging Mr. Berken.

So who is it? Roch give us your best guess.

I was wrong about Hernandez (I'll blame bad info that was given to me or a sudden change in plans because, you know, it's never my fault), so it's either Berken or Waters. I guess I'm leaning toward Berken. - Roch

Man that is a bummer. I want to know who is starting Tuesday!

Tell me Roch do you think other cellar dwelling team's fans are as rabid as O's fans seem?

If we can just start winning again the stadium is gonna be rocking!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've always said this is a baseball town. We love our football here, for sure, but Camden Yards will be packed again. And even when it isn't, there's still a high level of interest in the Orioles. Rabid is an accurate description. - Roch

Ben W said:

I still think Pauley but Berken could enter the picture. We'll see who they take. Berken would be the diamond in the rough so I would go with him.

I'm happy Tillman does not have a serious injury. That kind of injury can be treatable by resting and not doing any running. It's okay, people.

But I don't play a doctor in real life or on TV. So, you'll have to defer to Roch.

All of these young guys are great and I'm ready for a few of them, but why no mention of promoting Patton? I would like his name added to the conversation.

My guess is Patton to get the call on Tuesday.

On Baseball Tonight, Buck and Tim discussed 18 rookie Pitchers coming up in May and Buck was on point about how you have to protect your young kids until they are ready.

I swear that he was talking to the Trolls.

I liked koji but does he get sqeezed or what? Bass and sherrill looked good whereas johnson has been shakey. I'll take the win but the orioles continue to do things that will cost them big time. Love jones but he has had some real defensive lapses recently. Baserunning is ameteur hour still. How could it change if DT feels like his guys should know better and won't do it again. Really?

Jeffry said:

Great win for the O's to find a way to win despite only 3 hits - this is the type of game that we so often have found a way to lose - are we turning the corner or is this a case of running into a team that is even more adept at finding ways to lose than the O's?

I noticed Garrett Olson pitched 6 shutout innings against the Punch and Judy Giants tonight - 2 H, 4 BB, 4 K, and pulled after 85 pitches. Too bad the bullpen blew it for him tonight. Nice kid, good stuff, hope he continues to find success in Seattle. Kind of a shame he could never consistently harness his stuff for us.

I'm guessing they bring up Berken and transfer Alfredo Simon to the 60-day DL to make room for him on the 40-man roster. Right now, it looks like Ray will be packing for Norfolk - the rest of the bullpen seems to be rounding into form.

I noticed looking at the 40-man on orioles.com that Troy Patton is listed as a switch hitter: in disbelief, I cross-referenced it with baseball-reference.com, and they have the same thing.....really now? (I checked his batting stats - 1 for 3 in the bigs, and 1 for 22 with 4 BBs in 30 minor league plate appearances) Apparently it's happened before (Johnny Vander Meer, Dwight Gooden, Bob Gibson, Carlos Zambrano, among others). It's tough enough for an everyday player to maintain both sides - it seems fairly silly to me for a pitcher to switch hit. Do you know anything about this, Roch?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nope, that's news to me. Interesting. - Roch

Check out the subtle jab Lou Montanez throws at Felix Pie in the Baltimore Sun.

Understand that he's talking about Nolan Reimold in this quote:

"I know if he's really successful, I may never have a place here to be successful. But that's OK. I'm totally content with guys that earn their spots."

Wonder who might be blocking Lou's path that hasn't "earned his spot"?

mpm2009 said:

I'll say Berken with the O's Tuesday...Pauley's pitching Sunday and Waters probably Monday at Toledo.

If Koji's out, I'll guess Hernandez with the O's Thursday...that would be on five days rest.

Tillman's numbers deserve a call-up, but apparently he's not an option now like Roch and everyone says.

Ryan said:

Roch- Billy Beane always said, if a guy is dominating the AAA level, and he is left there too long, he adjusts to that type of player. Usually, AAA are career minor leaguers that have had a little taste, they are free swingers, lack plate discipline, etc. You can ruin a prospect by leaving them down too long as easy as calling them up too soon. Tillman is beyond minor league hitters. He has nothing more to learn at that level. Why learn to bring you ball down in the zone more if you are striking out 12 per 9 innings.
Not calling him up is a huge mistake. I know he is 21. I don't care about age. Only time will tell who is right.
Do you at least see my point? I guess, what I am saying is, he is being taught bad habits by going against lower talent.

Lost in Mount Vernon said:

You say Berken, Roch, I'm going to have to go with Waters. While his numbers haven't been as impressive, I think the club is more apt to go with somebody who already has ML experience. In my opinion, the club is more apt to give second chances rather than call up another pitcher who has never pitched in the majors. The O's might tip their hat to that if he is held out of his start on Monday. Either way, I will be there on Tuesday to watch.

John said:

Well we'll see if Patton gets removed today for a groin pull which is suddenly more contagious that swine flu.

Anybody that thinks the O's get critisized too much ought to read the Indians forum. Nothing but second guessing Eric Wedge and calling for his and Shapiro's heads.Matt Laporta doesn't seem to be playing much and apparently Sizemore is hurt.

Of course no one tops the O's in understating injuries. Day to day one day and under the knife the next. There's nothing funnier than the O's playing everything close to the vest.Tillman could still have a miraculous healing and be called up Tues.

Full Monty said:

I assume MONTANEZ will be sent to the DL on Tuesday and the NEW PITCHER will take his place at that time ... while SCOTT goes on a short rehab assignment and replaces a SUCKY RELIEVER a couple of days later?

fkterp said:

my guess is berken. with patton coming off surgery there is no sense bringing him up this early in the season. with waters and pauley i don't see either with a long term future with the o's so they are at norfolk in case of emergency. berken, tillman and hernandez (and patton) are all considered possible pitchers of the future (which is now for all intents and purposes). so bringing one of them up makes more sense. tillman is injured and hernandez pitched friday so it's berken. i expect weiters to be with the o's in about 10 days to 2 weeks. nice to see the orioles have several quality options when changes are needed. thank you peter angelos ofr finally waking up and hiring andy macphail and letting him do his job. of course angelos should have allowed gillick to do his job years ago but better late than never.

Craig said:

Gotta be Pauley or Berken then....my guess is Pauley....he is by far the most experienced and won 14 games last year at AAA and has nothing more to prove there except hopefully he got in great pitching shape....would not surprise me if it was Berken but he has never been that great....we will kinow soon.

"Watching the Nats young starters the last two nights blows holes in my theory that young pitchers need time in the minors."

Agreed Rob in VA.

The Nats management was brave enough to call up the youngsters and let them get their feet wet. It's called rebuilding instead of another temporary stop gap solution which is essentially what Andrew has been doing the last two years. The Marlins have been doing this for years with great results.

As for the Japanese weather: Yes I know most of the teams play indoors, but they practice outside and these guys grew up in the brutally hot Japanese summers. So for Palmer to be saying that Koji can't the handle the East Coast heat, well that's just incorrect. 80 odd degrees with the humididty under 90 per cent is spring time in Japan.

Jack said:

Terpsfan - the O's steal two wins from the only team worse then them, and you get all giddy like a high school prom queen....lol

This injury may or may not be a "minor" injury. We have to wait for the drama queen Andrew to decide when the right time will be to issue a statement.

Who is going to be called up? Hmmm, Andrew just cannot make a decision. Come on Andrew, you can do it. Go Andy Go Andy Go Andy, you can make a decision, come on, go for it!

This organization is an embarassment to watch. There is no one more of a deeper O's fan then me, but there comes a time where if you accept the way they are playing for whatever excuse you fathom, then you are just as much a losers as they are.....am I correct Terps?

Jack said:

Key word Abrupt, what does Andrew do decisively or quickly..
NOTHING

Now Uehara is out. The only decent pitcher we had besides Bergy. Guthrie is either pitching hurt or the leauge has figured the released realistic #4 starter out. He was NEVER a "ACE" like Andrew Ventura tried to lead us on to believe. More Fools Aid to the ones on here who think he was.

I agree the O's fans are rabid about ....getting rid of Angelos. There is probably a 90% majority who would like to see him sell the team. As with the fans packing the stadium, 11 years of being a door mat and whipping boy for the other teams, have drove away so many fans, it will take years for them to come back. I refused years ago to pay ML prices to see AAA baseball. And by the looks of it, 30,000 others agree with me each game. It felt good to give up my season tickets.

Brummie...two wins agains our twin team and a few now think we are invisible. They have forgotten just last week they had the opionion that Trembley had to go, call up the calvary and we need to do everything you and I have been saying. Well, atleast you and I do not make major changes with each win/loss or with a different direction of the wind. Our facts and points of view stay the course....ANDREW has to go

Roch, Have you heard any thoughts given to Koji reverting back to becoming a long reliever. It appears that he is better suited for that role.

Not at this early stage of his Orioles career. - Roch

I think Schmuck is so fearful about losing his job, or is auditioning for a possible spot on the O's PR team. I have never seen a reporter change direction so quickly in terms of his writing.

I am suprise he isnt calling Andrew our next president. Now all of a sudden, Andrew is great and the o's have "turned the corner" I think the pineapple juice has gotten to him. Somebody must have told him, tone it down or else you will be the next to get the slip....and he has changed reporting direction quicker then a start by Eaton!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To be fair to the Schmucker, I haven't read a negative word from him concerning MacPhail. Not sure what you mean by changing direction. When did he rip MacPhail or the plan? - Roch

Ray said:

Didn't see much of the game last night, but I think it's safe to say that Koji is not going to be allowed to pitch Wednesday. We have been trying to get him an extra day's rest when we can and I just don't see the O's taking that chance.

It's also pretty incredible to me that anyone would think that David Hernandez would come back on three days rest after throwing 114 pitches in his previous start. Even more incredible was the talk here last night that Tillman was removed so that he could pitch Tuesday on two days rest. This is simply not how this organization, directed by Andy MacPhail, does things. I for one, am glad that is the case.

I think DT said about Koji, that we need to figure this thing out for him. Someone else here mentioned it, and I believe they're right, Koji will be in the bullpen before the season is over. I think it's possible it could be by July 1.

My hope now would be Berken or Patton Tuesday and Hernandez Wednesday.

So much hostility..

Look, we all want the same thing here. We want the O's to be consistent winners again, and for the organization to no longer be a joke from the minors on up. How they get there, and how long it takes is all subject to speculation after that. Everybody has an opinion, but in the end, none of us make the decisions. We're not seeing the results in the win/loss column yet in the majors, but there is still plenty to be upbeat about. We actually have a whole crop of young pitching talent to be excited about, plus the number one prospect in all of baseball right now, who's on the verge of being with the parent club in a matter of weeks. And just look at the outfield now! Reimold, Jones, and Markakis.

I know it's hard to watch the boneheaded errors, and the terrible pitching by the stopgaps, but before we know it, we'll be watching the likes of Patton, Tillman, Hernandez, Berken, et al. I'm fairly certain that by years end, we'll have seen all of them pitch.

Also, some other teams are able to rush pitching prospects because they aren't in the AL East. So of course the Nats can afford to bring up the likes of Detwiler and let him learn in the majors. That hasn't exactly worked for us in the past. We need our young pitchers to come up with a buttload of confidence, because they'll be pitching in very hostile territory a lot.

Brummie, you are a fool, and now you are trying to cover yourself. First of all, how do you know where Japanese teams practice? What would be the point of practicing outside if they always play inside?

Furthermore, summers in Japan are not "brutally hot" as you keep claiming. Have you ever seen a map? Japan is just as far north as Canada and Siberia. Their summers are no hotter than British Columbia's.
