Any questions? (tarp being removed....game resumes 950pm)
| | Comments (11)

While we are in rain delay mode feel free to write in any questions you might have about the O's or the O's minors. I'll do my best to answer each one.

By the way, if this game never gets resumed, tonight is wiped out and the Sox would lose the 9-1 lead. They would start over with a fresh game. No one is expecting that to happen though with this game three outs away from becoming official.

Is this team ever going to improve? The Orioles look like they are in a permanent slump. Year after year and year. I believe that MacPhail is as good as anyone, and Tremblay seems a good manager for the spot.

But the team itself seems sure it is going to lose, most days. This is just really, really dreadful.

The team, for the second year in a row, is competitive - OUTSIDE OF THE DIVSION. The Orioles are 24-25 in games vs. non AL East teams, but 10-17 vs. the East. The East is the Beast, the best division in baseball.

To me, buidling from within with young pitching is the only way they will ever get over the hump in this divison. Having said that they just seem over matched vs. the Red Sox. The O's have become their whipping boys right now.

Can they suspend it, home team advantage, also could Tanaka get promoted he is tearing up AA?

The game is in the umps hands now. They will not call this anytime soon, not with just three outs before an offcial game.

I think Tanaka will stay at AA for now. The AAA bullpen is loaded with decent talent. - Steve

The orioles would never be that lucky!!! What an ugly game!! No pitching no hitting the only one that looked decent at the plate was Pie!! How much longer do we have to watch rich hill??
____________________________________________________________
It has been two very ugly starts for Hill. Right before that he pitched very well at Philly. I think he will get more chances, partly because there is no one ready to call up right now. I don't see the O's rushing up one of the big three or Patton anytime soon now. Steve

I know that this is a big question, but can you give us a projected lineup of next years, and who the 5 starters will be. you can include any trades that you think may go down or whatever.

Thanx

The only non-pitching positions that could be open next year are first and third base. Everyone else is due to come back or under contract. Now we need to see, will they resign Huff and/or pick up Mora's option for next year. If neither return, Wigginton could take one of those spots, Scott could play first or Brandon Snyder could play first.

I think Tillman and Patton are the most likely to have a chance to crack next year's rotation at the start or early in the season. Steve

Do you believe this puts the fork into rich hill? a 7.08 era after 40 innings and you have to say mercy at some point, right? even if we don't bring up one of the top guns, can't we atleast fill in waters or pauley for some control?

I really don't know if those are big upgrades. It's possible but i don't think they will give up on Hill this soon. Tonight was just a mismatch, a pitcher with shaky control vs. a team that will not swing at anything out of the zone.

Steve-

It has been said that Matusz is on the "Wieters Plan", but I believe Matusz has a Major League contract, correct? Would that mean the O's would be more likely to bring him up on Opening Day next year, as opposed to following the path they took with Wieters? It seems like Matusz will be able to handle the jump from AA if he doesn't get to AAA this season.
_____________________________________________________________
Matusz does have a ML contract and is already on the 40-man roster. I don't think that helps him make this club on opening day next year. Under Andy MacPhail's somewhat more conservative plan, I could see him starting next year at AAA and maybe come up a month or two into the season if he progress well. He should progress well, he's been looking great. - Steve

Steve,

Are you getting any reads on what the O's will do at the trade deadline? I have to think Huff/Baez/Sherrill will be gone for the right package. Odds that Guthrie or Scott are dealt at the deadline?
__________________________________________________________
Really, I don't expect a lot of deals, but I do expect a lot of talk and speculation. Of course, we have that every year. MacPhail won't give anyone away. He is still open to talking contract with Huff for the future. We'll see on that one. Remember, any player traded, you have to have someone to replace him.

But, in this rebuilding mode with youth I could see the O's make a deal or two to get more prospects or Major Leaguers very early in their careers. - Steve

sTEVE-- WILL I LIVE LONG ENOUGH TO SEE THE ORIOLES IN THE PLAYOFFS AGAIN??
I am starting to think NO!!!!!!!!!!!

How old are you!! Just kidding.

Easy to be down on a night like tonight Shernorioles.

Keep in my mind the fans will get to see Reimold, Wieters, Jones, Bergesen, etc for the rest of the year and more could be on the way. I won't say to be patient, how can anyone say that to any long suffering O's fan.

This division is just so brutal. It's not like the Ravens get three or four wins each year with clev and cincy. I am a big believer in MacPhail, just based on what he has done already.

Many fans jumped off the wagon long ago. That's fine. Some root for a winner only, but many fans also see improvement and better days ahead. I won't promise any more that that, I'd be crazy too in this division. You sound like a good fan, hope you are with this team for many, many more years and that someday they reward the loyalty of you and fans just like you. - Steve

Steve,

The reason why Kranitz was brought in to Baltimore from down here, was due to the success he had with young pitching staffs. But after initial solid outings from guys who just get called up from the minors, it seems that with every start each pitcher progressively gets worse after spending more time working with Kranitz.

I know that these are young pitchers, and we do play in the offensive juggernaut that is the AL East, but he needs to be subject to more scrutiny about not being able to get more out of his guys than what is currently occurring.

Living in Miami, I saw numerous Marlins games when Kranitz was the pitching coach. I acknowledge that the talent on our staff is not as good as the Marlins' was in '06 when he won the Major League Coach of the Year, but that does not excuse the in-game pitching philosophy that is currently occurring. I know that I don't play baseball professionally, but these young pitchers are becoming extremely predictable with successive starts.

Just a thought.
_________________________________________________________
Max, I don't know how you can say that when Bergesen is 4-0 with an ERA of 2.23 over his last six starts. He has made big strides under Kranitz. His slider has become a real solid pitch.

Who has not improved, Berken? Hernandez? These two have not nearly made enough starts for any real judgement on them just yet.

Steve- great stuff as always. Quick tangent for a slow (for the O's) night: Andy MacPhail's philosophy has been plainly stated as "grow the arms, buy the bats" but we have not shown the inclination to pay for a serious upgrade in the hitting department, but rather solid role players are generally the target. No great FA will ever be a good value, so do you foresee us picking up a heavy duty bat in the next couple of years or just sticking with a solid but not awe-inspiring lineup?
________________________________________________________
I think "buying" a bat would be one of the last pieces of the puzzle. When the pitching is in place and the team's record is better. Than you convince a free agent hitter to come here to be the "final piece" and help get the team over the top. The pitching improvement needs to come first in my opinion. - Steve

Will this team ever get any real coaches? Coaches that teach them and help them. The best players on this team are the ones not being coached all year by these coaches.

Even DT does not stand up for his players. After the BS hit by pitch I expected him to argue enough to get tossed. It was like watching my mother (56)argue with a waiter or something.

Anyone else remember the Mora arguement at home plate a month or so ago? DT is arguing with the Ump AND holding back Mora. WHY is he doing both? Where are the base coaches to grab Mora.

This team has NO spark and never will with these Coaches.
__________________________________________________________
Everyone should shoulder some blame with all the base running blunders. Coaches and players alike. I thought Trembley might get thrown out tonight as well. But not to fire up a team. If these players need Trembley getting tossed to be fired up, there is a bigger problem here.

You have to understand, when your starter gives up nine runs, no team will look like it has any spark.

Having said all that, we'd all like to see them put up a better fight vs. the Sox than this, so far tonight. - Steve
