Celebrity Justice Stinks!
| | Comments (8)

Superstar athletes get everything they want every step of the way. From fame to fortune to women, superstardom clearly has its fringe benefits. But our justice system shouldn't be hijacked by athletes. Lady Justice is supposed to be blind. Well clearly something is broken because superstar athletes seem to get more hooks than the King of Ashburn.

Let's start with the case of Donte Stallworth. He mowed down a construction crane operator who was trying to catch a bus at 7:15 in the morning in Miami Beach, Florida as he was driving his black 2005 Bentley Continental GT while drunk. Stallworth was charged with DUI and second degree manslaughter. Those are serious charges and they were deserved. He killed somebody while blowing a 0.12 BAC, well over the legal limit. To his credit, Stallworth took responsibility immediately and was very apologetic. But "I'm sorry" should only go so far when it comes to the law. Still, it worked for Stallworth. Instead of serving years in jail, all he got was 30 days. That's it. What a joke!

Seriously, do you think you would receive that light of a sentence if you were in his shoes? No chance! You don't catch touchdown passes for a living and you're not loaded. Sadly money matters when it comes to the law. I'm guessing Stallworth's undisclosed settlement to the victim's family was in the millions and that had to help when it came time for sentencing. But it shouldn't have. When you kill somebody while driving drunk you should get way more than 30 days, no matter how apologetic you are and no matter how much money you give to the victim's family.

But we shouldn't be surprised. We've seen this before. In 1998, St. Louis Rams defensive end Leonard Little killed a woman after leaving a birthday party drunk. When tested, his blood alcohol level measured 0.19 percent, more than double the legal limit. So what punishment did Little get for such a grave offense? How about 90 days in jail. Seriously, is that supposed to be a deterrent? Not at all. That's why nobody should be shocked that six years later Little was arrested again for drunk driving and speeding. But once again he got hooked. Despite the fact that the police said he had bloodshot and watery eyes, smelled of alcohol and failed three sobriety tests, Little was acquitted of driving while intoxicated and was convicted of only the misdemeanor charge of speeding. What are the chances we'd see a similar fate it we were in Little's shoes? How about zippy chance!

The inequities when it comes to our justice system seem to have no bounds when it comes to athletes. Retired NBA star Jayson Williams still remains free seven years after he was sent to prison for covering up the shooting of a hired driver more than seven years ago. No big deal though, right? What harm could he do out of prison? Well, let's see, this year police had to use a stun gun on him in his New York hotel room. Then in May he was arrested for punching someone in a barroom dispute. Oh, Williams also supposedly beat up his wife. But no rush to put the convicted felon behind bars. I mean, he was a really good hoopster!

I could go on and on and point to case after case. The bottom line is this: Athletes get hooked. That's understandable when it comes to free meals or getting into a club. We love to watch them perform, we idolize them and we put them on pedestals. But they shouldn't be up on a pedestal when it comes to the law. They should be treated like you and I. Sadly, they aren't. Celebrity justice stinks!

Athletes do get hooked....Ray Lewis killed someone and he is still playing.

Let's extend to celebs, too. Chris Brown beat Rihanna senseless and is getting community service. Other than murder, beating someone with your fists is the most violent crime there is!

It's true, athletes find ways to get lesser sentencing than most of the general population. But thats not because there athletes, its because they have the MONEY to afford the best lawyers. This argument has always bothered me. WHAT DOES A JUDGE HAVE TO GAIN BY LETTING AN ATHLETE OFF? The answer is absolutely nothing.

Answer this, if a guy who makes minimum wage and YOURSELF both get charged for the same offense who do you think is more likely to get off easier? The answer is Mr. Cheat Sheet himself, and it's not because you have a 42 inch vertical.

The reason why you don't hear about the hedge fund manager or the doctor beating his DUI case is because its not the lead story on SportsCenter or your amazing NFL segment that takes place 3 months before the season begins...

Great analysis from a pathetic attorney associated with the show who loves to make everything about him...no, not Ram, JP. Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between the two.

You are sleeping on the Johnny Cochrane lawyers these guys can pull. These hot shots could probably hit you with a restraining order from one of the mics in the WJFK studio Flaim.

The worst part to me is that Stallworth didn't even try to slow down. He FLASHED HIS [expletive deleted] HIGH BEAMS at the guy to warn him, but didn't take the time to put his foot on the brake. That is just pure negligence; and I honestly have the feeling that he thinks he is too great and important to slow down for this guy, and that he has to get out of HIS way, since he's the great Dante Stallworth, who occasionally catches touchdowns.

What a despicable human being, and a sickening display of "justice."

Yeah True, it sucks what can u do!
Vick did get almost 2 years, killing a human should get the same time.atleast yeah It stinks.
Leonard Little did get 1000 hours community service, that is 500 free appearances for the King of Ashburn. he would frown on that sentence!
