Five things I KNOW I know
| | Comments (14)

1) Lebron should have shook hands and talked to the media after being eliminated by the Orlando Magic. I don't think it was a catastrophic mistake. I'm not going to overreact and say he's a bad guy, and I'm not going to forget about how great he's acted since he came into the league. I'll give him a pass this time, but in the future he has to take his next big loss like a man. He doesn't want to be forever tarnished as a sore sport the way Isiah Thomas is after walking off the court early against the Bulls. And talking to the media may seem trivial, but if you want to bask in the glow of the press fawning over you, then you have to take the hard questions when you don't feel like it as well. It's not a one way street.

2) I'm still rooting for Mine That Bird, even though there is no real Triple Crown to root for at the Belmont. Calvin Borel is going for his personal triple crown after winning the Preakness aboard Rachel Alexandra. Now that Alexandra is skipping the Belmont, Borel is back on Mine That Bird. The owners have been gracious to Borel after he became the first jockey to turn his back on his Kentucky Derby winning horse. Mine That Bird has already proven that his Derby win wasn't a fluke. But a win at the Belmont will have people forever wondering what could have been if Borel stayed on Mine That Bird for all three races. Maybe Borel could have found the rail in Baltimore and changed the course of racing history.

Jon-Jansen.jpg

3) Jon Jansen was one of the classiest Redskins in history. All he did was show up and play hard, play hurt and give up his body for a decade of futility for a once proud franchise. I can't say I blame the Redskins for letting him go at this point. His body is really breaking down and the Skins probably need a fresh start on the right side of the offensive line. It's a shame the Redskins could never live up to the hype during his tenure here though. Jon Jonsen did his job and never complained for 10 years.

If the Skins had 10 or 12 more like Jon Jansen on this team they probably wouldn't have burned through so many head coaches recently.

4) The Nationals fired the wrong guy. Randy St. Claire was their pitching coach until the Nats canned him Tuesday. Admittedly the pitchers are awful. But do you really think it's the pitching coach's fault? It's like rearranging the deck chairs of the Titanic. The ship is sinking either way. If they are going to fire people, maybe they should look to the front office the way they did when Jim Bowden was let go in the spring after one too many scandals. The Nats' pitching problems were to be expected this season, and what plagues the Nats is not bad coaching. It's bad players. That's on the front office not the coaches. When they fire Manny Acta it won't be his fault either.

5) The Wizards have to draft the best player available with the number 5 pick. If they don't trade the pick, the Wiz can't just draft the best big man or the best defender. They don't have the luxury of focusing on any one position. They need the best player. That means the guy who has the potential to be an All-Star. I guarantee that there will be at least one player drafted from number 5 on that makes multiple All-Star teams. The pressure is on to find that guy regardless of position. If Tyreke Evans is available the Wizards can't pass him up. In my mind he's a can't miss superstar regardless of whether he's fills a particular need.

The Wizards have the best history in NBA drafts. Ask John Awfulville.

Congrats on the addition to the fam. There's no chance that the Wizards make the right pick, even with Lurch's mom's boyfriend at the helm.

Now I remember who played in the '89 Final Four. It was George Mason, Florida, Ohio State and Golden State (led by a young center named Jimmy Carter).

Agreed, Jansen was/is a beast and a great Redskin. He deserved a championship but with an impatient D Snyder at the helm it was never in the cards. Dan is just beginning to realize that he, at the very least, needs a 3 year plan rather than a 1 year plan.

Acta shouldn't be fired. The Nats believe it or not are building a good team. Give them a few years to make up for Bowden.

Wow! I actually made it through your post without falling asleep. Good job on keeping it shorter than JP's book this time.

Randy St. Clair should have been fired last year. The relievers, and many of the starters were atrocious.

Manny is next, and soon. No doubt about it.
