Let's make a deal

"COME ON DOWN!"
Just thought I'd say that for fun. Actually, I didn't expect to get such a great response to my last entry, but it was a lot of fun to hear from all of you, so let's keep it going.
First off, let me say that it wasn't just a topic I chose off the cuff. I asked around to see what you all might respond to and, well, you did, so I guess I found a good topic.
I'd also like to mention that some of you actually read what I wrote, and some of you only saw the words "TRADE BRIAN."
I enjoy the dialogue, but it gets stalled if you don't take in the whole of what was said. Oriole fan 33, nice job, you got it--Thank you. Domenic and others, the four-year contract is what makes the deal even better for Brian. He's a steal at that price, I think. I see your other points though and I like it--stick around, you're in my front row.
As for the rest of the class, Adam, c'mon what does "contract situational knowledge" have to do with it? I like your passion but let's stay on track.
But sit next to Adam, I still like him.
Henry, you missed the point (lol) but we'd need a crystal ball to prove it. Nebraska, you are really watching the games too closely, but you get to sit in the front row too--ahead of Adam and Domenic if they let you.
BMS, yes they will give up prospects to win this year. Bill of Sals, your job is to come up with a realistic trade. Do some homework. Shawn, Jeremy would get a lot --people around baseball know what he is really worth. Daniel, it's a business deal. You have to take your heart out of it. Nick, A+ - Sit next to Nebraska. Carlos, GregA, Sherno, and Dennis, we need more communication. Robert People, you're very pensive--good job and stick around. Frank, yes I think that Brian has a lot more years. Ching, ching, but who else will get us another deal like Tejada and Bedard?
Wow, you've all been great, but let's not forget that we are just jockeying around here to find out where we stand and what we're really worth. Try not to think with your heart here. It's what made this organization great. They made deals that a lot of people thought were bad but look what happened. Doyle Alexander, Grant Jackson, and Ken Holtzman, were 3 of 5 players who were great in their day, and all three were traded from Baltimore to NY in a ten-player deal.
The Orioles got back Scott McGregor, Tippy Martinez, Rudy May, Dave Pagan, and a 162-pound back-up catcher at the time. All were unknown prospects who paid off.
Rudy was later traded for Gary Roenicke and Tim Stoddard. I'm sure people were upset that the O's gave up proven winners in Alexander, Jackson, and Holtzman. It's a pivotal time for the O's. I see daylight here the way we did when Brian came up with Matos and Bigby and Gibbons. We had a chance to jump back in the race when Jason Johnson started off 10 -1, and we could have traded him for a bunch at the time and acquired a shortstop and a young starter at least. He ended up with a losing record by the end of the season.
We have to keep thinking and trying until we find the right combo. Don't fall in love with anybody at this time of year. Wait until we win it all again, and then you can make them talk show hosts...LOL...

Hey Rick, the back and forth is what it's all about, right?! As long as everyone keeps it coordial and respectful there's no problem with it. So long as people justify their comments with some sort of fact or reason, I say bring it on! Otherwise, it's like talking football with my Dad, who thinks you can call an entire game with sweeps, and sees no reason to call anything else. (And incidentally my Dad worshiped Unitas, so I'm not sure why he always wants to run that play!)
-----------------------
Domenic, You're right. Come up with something feesible and I can bend at times too. Baseball is not a perfect science, otherwise the Yankees would win every year. Now throw me a bone and tell me who'd you be dealing and for whom? -Rick
Great job Rick. Go you think maybe Izturis goes with the way that Andino is playing? Or the other way around, Andino goes, and Izzy stays????
Thanks
---------------------------
Andrew, I'm not sold on either yet. Izturis was just starting to hit before the DL stint. Andino is playing well in his absence for a back-up but a SS for me has to be mechanically perfect. Andino's not there yet, but I like what he brings to the table. He is spirited and I like that. The one ear in and the one ear out has to go out with the FERNANDO philosophy: "It's better to look good than to play good" LOL --This is still the big leagues though, and we must maintain a sense of professionalism. -Rick
at least I got mentioned in the blog...
I think your perspective on this whole thing is very similar but was unclear a little by the way the post was presented. I am all for trading anyone on our roster if the haul we get in return is better than what we are giving up.
There are certainly two categories of people to trade. Those who are basically done with the Orioles or are not an obvious part of the future and then those who will hopefully be a part of the next winning team in Baltimore.
I guess I would just place Brian in the Markakis, Jones, Reimold, and Wieters category. You only trade those guys if the return you are getting back is clear to be better than what you are giving up. Anyone would trade one of those guys for Longoria and Price (obviously the Rays would not do that deal just an example).
By the way, I did notice you said Berken the other night rather than Berkens.
We do have at least one thing in common Rick. We both love the Orioles and want to see them with the WS trophy in hand ASAP!
Rick, this is always a little tough for me since I really like most of the players on our team. However, the Orioles are probably in need of some pitching, and while I don't follow other teams' minor league systems that closely, I could see sending Huff to someone like the Mets that needs a first baseman. That said, the Mets also have a guy named Jon Niese in their minor league system that seems to be a little rough around the edges, but has decent talent. According to projectprospect.com, he's the 28th ranked pitching prospect in the country. While there are 27 other guys in front of him, I did notice that he doesn't walk too many batters (only 8.4% of the time), and as you always say, "nothing good comes after a walk." I'd love to see the Orioles do with Aubrey Huff what they did with Mike Bordick in "lending" him to another team (in fact I think it was the Mets with Bordick also, and they got Melvin Mora in that trade). However, at some point Brandon Snyder is probably going to be ready to come up, and I would bet that time might be right around when Wiggington's contract is up after next season. And there are plenty of other potential trades out there that would involve Sherrill, Mora, Wiggington, and others.
My sister goes to school down in Newport News, and she went to the Tides game the other night. (she's a huge O's fan just like me). She was a little disappointed in Snyder in that she said he was only batting .125, but I think that he just came up to AAA, so I'm not too worried about that. But she did say that Chris Tillman looked great against Pawtucket, so that gives me a lot of hope.
hey rick, wat do u think about the o's picking up willy mo pena, and putting him in felix p.a. spot??
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dont think it would make much sence since we have players in our own system who would match up alot better. Pie doesn't look all that impressive so far but in my mind he should be down in AAA learning to play the game. He has tools and many dont know that he is a career .300 hitter in the minors. We 've got our work cut out with him but we have to make him a better player --it wont happen on his own.
rick,
how about the orioles trade baez and huff to someone like colorado for tulowitski win win situation ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Steven sure it would be a good deal for the O's but why would Colorado make that deal . its not a win win at all. Tulowitski is 24 and has a much higher ceiling for alot more yrs.
rick why didn"t you and your nationals brodcaster have another homerun derby on wii you would of took him
orioles majic make it happen
"Pie doesn't look all that impressive so far but in my mind he should be down in AAA learning to play the game."
Pie has to clear waivers to be sent down to AAA and Andy Macphail has said numerous times that there is no way he will clear waivers.
"Pie has to clear waivers to be sent down to AAA and Andy Macphail has said numerous times that there is no way he will clear waivers."
But...Pie could be packaged with, say, Huff or Baez to sweeten a deal and get back a prospect with more options or more worth (i.e. corner infielder) to the organization. I like Pie a lot and think he'll work well as a 4th outfielder but let's face it...Reimold, Jones and Markakis aren't going anywhere.
Rick, you were right the first time. Roberts should be on the block...for the right price. This team is not that good yet. Their pitching overall is bad and the lineup is below average. No veteran should be untouchable.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thank You for pointing that out. So many fans think that wanting to HEAR what others would trade for Brian means we dont like him. Not at all. We havn"t won anything here since 83 and Im sure we're all tired of losing. Yes we fall in love with all of them and it would break our hearts to see B-Rob go. B-Rob could be the only asset that could get 3 or 4 younger players in return. Lets just sniff around and see, along with the rest of our veteran guys, what we could possibly get. Its healthy and smart and good baseball business. Hey didn't know I had an army---ATTEN-HUT--FORWARD MARCH--- I was a policeman in the AirForse (AP) for 6 years and also a drill sgt. Just had to say that for fun. AT EASE. dont be AWOL I'll take to you soon.
Rick, it was really nice meeting you the other day at the ballpark. You're the only Oriole I've ever met from when I was a child, and it was a big thrill for me, as well as for my kid sisters. I'm leaving tomorrow evening for a ten day trip back to our family's homestead in Italy. (Incidentally, you know you're addicted to the Orioles when you plan a trip like that around a west coast swing and the all-star game...) We have a computer at our house over there, so I'll be checking in and seeing what the O's are doing...keep me updated on my team!
Rick,
Do you think trading Roberts would weaken our middle infield? Not to mention his value as a leadoff man. I know you need to trade something to get something. He is such a good player to build around. If you trade Huff and Ray in a package...maybe, but for who? I would say stand still and use the farm to fill positions. Unless the Pirates want to give us Sanchez.Ha!
Love your blogs Rick!

Hey Rick...first time poster here. San Fran needs some hitting help, do they have any young talent we could get back in exchange for Huff? And, I'm gonna go out on a limb here, but I think that after Matt W. has about 4-5 years under his belt, your title of "best catcher we ever had" will have to be passed on! Enjoy your TV work Rick, keep it up!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Steve: 1st ques: Yes I do think you are right SF does need some help ,but really the only thing they have to give us for Huff is pitching and thats the only thing keeping them in the race. A look at there minor league system and its hard to evaluate any of there AAA players in the PCL because that league always has escalated numbers above the other leagues because the ball travels so much better. There are a few interesting pitchers like KEVIN PUCETAS a big RHP and RYAN SADOWSKI both have good era for that league. You can never trust the position players to put up the same kind of numbers in the ML's.
As for Matt Wieters , I agree he should surpass my numbers offensively fairly easy if he stays healthy. He'll have to go some to catch me on defense. It would be hard for him to throw for those kind of numbers (40 -60%) in todays game. I was a little quicker moving behind the dish but then I wasn't as big as he is --easier for me. I'll tell you this much I would sure like to see him do it. He has great tools and it would be alot of fun watching him . Doesn't bother my ego at all.
No player is untouchable. If would be short-sighted to just say "this guy is untouchable" and not even entertain the idea of listening to an offer. Rest assured, if he goes he won't go without some substantial compensation in return. I think a lot of people jumped all over Dipper and didn't fully comprehend the big picture here. Roberts is adored in Baltimore and as soon as people see the words "trade" & "Roberts" in the same sentence it was like an involuntary reaction to lash out without thinking first.
Rick,
Think you and Jim Palmer could come in and finish out the regular season and show these young guys what its like to play like a champion?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bases on what we USED to do OK but not now. I know this much : If they would ask a few questions once in awhile when we were down on the field they way ahead of where they are. Only one player on the O's has ever come up to me and asked about what I think --who do you think it was ??? Bergesen-imagine that!
Roch
When is Adam Jones' contract up? I know that the O's will renew it, but I am curious. And also, how much is he making in a year? I believe when we picked him up he was on a Minor League contract.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He isn't a free agent until 2014. Not sure of his exact contract figure. Around $435,000. Close to the minimum. - Roch
Say it with me, Rick:
Ee-chee-roh. Ee-chee-roh.
I'm tired of hearing you say Ish-ih-roh. You're embarrassing yourself and our MASN broadcast.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Daniel: Ive heard it a hundred ways-get the entrepretor to tell me - And D. Im not embarrassed at all LOL Ive done alot more embarrassing things that mispronounce a name. Laugh it off for your benefit I'll just call him SUUU ZUUU KIII- ---say it with me--come on say it --or lets talk baseball. Thanks
