Matusz moving up
Today's attendance: 26,770.
I've just received confirmation that left-hander Brian Matusz will move up from Single-A Frederick to Double-A Bowie and make Wednesday's start against Reading at Prince George's Stadium.
Matusz had his last start with Frederick rained out after four scoreless innings, washing away his seven strikeouts. He didn't officially allow a run in his last 23 1/3 innings.
Matusz, the fourth overall pick in last year's draft, went 4-2 with a 2.16 ERA in 11 starts with the Keys, striking out 75 in 66 2/3 innings.
He was supposed to pitch in the upcoming Carolina/California League All-Star Game in Lake Elsinore, Ca., about an hour from where he played college ball at the University of San Diego, so the timing of his promotion is a little curious. But he's most deserving of a bump.

Bergesen could be a work horse guy for a couple of years. Very, very cool. I saw him three or four times in Bowie last year. He was doing his thing until August and he burned out. We need to watch that he doesnt get tired late in the year.
Being that he was only a mid teen prospect in our system last year things may be finally looking up.
jim hunter was having some fun in the orioles half of the eighth today
Roch,
While it is a bit curious knowing that he won't be able to pitch in the all-star game, he had nothing left to prove at Frederick. He ends with 27 1/3 innings (unofficially), and has stretched out his arm to the point where he's pitching 7 innings a game. Given that Patton and Arrieta just left Bowie as well, it's a timely move. I don't think we're rushing him one bit either, and I hope that he continues to succeed at AA. At the end of the day, where do we want him pitching? Lake Elsinore or Baltimore?

I'm not disagreeing. Just saying the plan until abou a week ago was for him to pitch in All-Star Game, then move up. Strange that it changed. - Roch
I've been watching the Atlanta feed on MLB.com and the broadcast team is stretching for things to talk about during this blowout.
They just compared Fred Mannfra's "pipes" to James Earl Jones. Prior to that they were still wondering out loud what to do with the crab mallets from last nights game.
Wouldn't it be great if the Birds could leave a lot more broadcasters struggling for things to talk about?
McPhail is getting serious about arming the big league club.IMO there's 4 spots up for grabs if Guts is traded.
Comeplete game for Bergy Yeaaaah! Busting another ace-like performance.
Huge. Brad was fantastic. Hits have been piling up.
/slump.
perhaps the pep talk worked...we looked very enthused the past couple of nights.
Hey Roch, I wonder if some of your doom sayers, who snidely refer to "Andrew" have the good sense to apologize when things go well. Of course, I already know that answer. Great effort today.
Roch - good to see the O's moving up their pitching prospects. But any idea when Brandon Snyder will get some love? He's been a man among boys in the Eastern league. Are the O's hesitant to move him to Norfolk because it's such a poor hitters park and they want to keep Snyder in the best possible situation for his continued success? If that's the case, is there any chance we see a AA >> Majors jump with Brandon when the O's deem he's ready?

I thought he'd move up at the break, but apparently not. I think the plan now is to let him pile up the stats at Bowie and keep working on his defense at first base. - Roch
These guys were so close to bursting through recently, great to see them get to enjoy the fruits of their efforts. Great game pitched by Bergesen. Go Sunday Scrubs! Rising tide lifts all boats, check Wiggy, Zaun, Pie, Salazar all contributing in field and at the dish -- lots of teams and managers have "Sunday" teams to help vets' hammys and shoulders. If you have no bench (which we didn't last year) or your bench isn't performing (earlier this year) or your whole team but for two players can't hit (last three weeks) any lineup change or non-change is second-guessable. And today Trembley looks like a genius.
This is the ACCOUNTABILITY some can't seem to see -- DT makes the calls, and is willing to look stupid or pigheaded or vet-fuzzy or "somebody's yes-man" if that what we think when we don't agree. He made the call he thinks is best for the team and doesn't apologize, he's accountable. That's what accountability is -- taking responsibility for performance of those under your protection and authority. Firing people willy-nilly for disappointing personnel moves or unrewarding growing pains of a young, rebuilding team is not accountability. It only encourages ultra-conservative and protect-your-___ behavior, only the ideas and moves that nobody can criticize (and hence have limited upside and impact), and the kind of impatience and Band-Aiding of broken legs that characterized the pre-McPhail era. And which continues to characterize many Oriole "fans" on this blog. I don't need to call your names -- those who truly fit this description (as opposed to the very many who simply, politely, and appropriately just disagree) always need to toot their own horns and react most when they are obviously wrong. And they don't appreciate McPhail Ale -- but that's just as well as one shouldn't start drinking ales while still in middle school. Stick to Orange Kool-Aid until you've learned a little more about baseball...

Roch,
Perhaps the Orioles just felt that pitching in Bowie was a bigger reward than pitching in the all-star game? It would be interesting to know if they asked Brian about that before promoting him.
Thanks for the heads up, I will have to make my first trip of the year to Bowie Wednesday night. The beauty of that park (aside from sitting real close) is that it so close to a certain wholesale warehouse that they don't have in my area, time to see our prized pup and stock up.
It would have been nice to see him get to play again in front of familiar faces... he probably got tickets for family and friends for that game!
Roch:
Do you think that they might send Matusz back to Frederick the day before the All-Star break so he's eligible to pitch in the game, then promote him back up to Bowie afterwards?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I doubt they'll shift him back and forth, but I didn't ask. The club hasn't announced his promotion yet. - Roch
While I'm sure Brian would have loved to have played an all-star game that close to his home...I'm sure that if asked he would take whatever is going to get him to the big leagues faster!
where do you think Matt Hobgood will start? How long do you think it will take him to get to the Bigs?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Probably Bluefield. The rest is up to him. He won't be rushed, but he could jump up to Aberdeen or Delmarva later in the season. - Roch
