News on Radhames Liz
| | Comments (11)

The Orioles have transferred pitcher Radhames Liz from Triple-A Norfolk to Double-A Bowie.

Liz was forced into Norfolk's rotation before Troy Patton and Jake Arrieta moved up from Bowie. He left spring training with the Orioles trying to convert him into a reliever who could dominate for a few innings while relying mostly on his fastball.

Liz was 0-2 with a 6.00 ERA in 15 games at Norfolk, including four starts. He allowed 47 hits in 36 innings, with 10 walks and 34 strikeouts. Opponents were batting .326 against him.

In his last appearance, Liz allowed one run and two hits, with a walk, in two innings Tuesday at Louisville. He gave up six runs and seven hits over four innings in his previous appearance.

Zach Booker was assigned to short-season Single-A Aberdeen, removing one catcher from Norfolk's roster. And Andy Mitchell rejoined the Tides' roster from the temporary inactive list.

Liz reminds me a lot of Daniel Cabrera. Loads of raw talent, but a huge question mark as far as being able to find the plate consistently.

On that Wieters in the dugout business, my wife asked me about it. What I told her was....if the ball is in the field of play and exits the field due to any action by the defensive team...runner gets a base. Same as throwing the ball into the dugout except he carried it in.

If any non player (fan or otherwise ) assists in stopping the ball from exiting the field of play...the ball is deemed to have left the field of play.

Whew!

A few observations from being at the game in Philly last night:

1. The O's put on a pretty good show in BP. Adam Jones hit (yes) a Bazooka shot off the Geico sign on the upper deck in left center. I was standing under the sign and I swear the ball was still rising. (I am sure it only looked that way, though). And Wieters hit one off the Jeep Sign, even deeper in right center and he reached the upper deck with another shot. It was an awesome sight to see him hit. Roch, et al: any ideas why the Orioles do not allow fans in during their entire BP at Camden Yards?

2. CBP is a very nice park but not in the same league as Oriole Park. Only Pittsburgh comes close in my humble opinon. Citizens Bank Park is to Camden yards as a Mazda 626 is to BMW 335i. Sure it has the same kind of features, and is clearly trying to echo the leader. But one is perfection across the board, and one falls short in each category.

3. Hill has a wicked curve and it was fun to watch the Phillies hitters struggle with it.

4. Luzinski (the Bull) has a BBQ pit out on Ashburn Way behind the outfield (not that they were copying Boog and Eutaw or anything!) Luzinski was a jerk to a friend of mine from Chicago who wanted to just connect for a second about the old times. The beef sandwhich was outstanding, however.

5. There was a nice video segment between innings called "motrin moments" that featured very painful looking collisions, etc. on the field. I had not seen that yet at Camden. The Animal House rally cry before the 8th inning was identical.

6. Several Phillies fans were not happy with the few brave souls shouting the O in the national anthem. I can kind of see the point that it borders on disrespectful. But the bottom line is F em, it is our anthem written in our city about a moment when our town practically saved the country from the marauding British who had just burned Washington and wanted to do the same to Baltimore and Philly. So here's what I said to one particularly irritaed Philly fan as I walked by just after the anthem. I leaned over and said to him, "O, hon"

7. Parking egress was much much worse than at any lot I have used at OPACY

8. I am told you could see the city skyline from somewhere. It was nowhere to be seen from what I could tell. Must have had to be in the upper deck.

9. The park is buile to look like a odd shape mid-city park crammed into a city neighborhood. But it sits all alone amongst a sea of parking lots on all sides. Sort of reminds me of frozen hamburger patties that are made with scalloped edges so their perfect roundness does not give away their machine-made origins.

10. They had a terrific rule that would not allow folks to walk down the aisles returning from the concession stands during any at-bat. Only between batters. This worked because a nice feature of the park is that you can watch all the action pretty clearly from the concourse and even stand at a raised counter to eat your goodies while watching.

All in all, a great night at a good but not inspiring ball park. And 7 runs for a pull-away O's win. Was a good night everybody.

I don't know what value Liz would add to a trade but that's what needs to happen.

Great rules question.
A player can reach over the fence to catch a ball, but I'm virtually positive he cannot jump into the seats and then catch a ball. That means a player catching the ball and then falling into the seats , over the railing/fence, would be considered out of play, and the runner awarded another base.
You might want to check w/ a real ump at the game Roch, but I think this is correct.
I remember Jeter flying into the seats after catching a ball, but I don't recall if there was anyone on base.

Here's to getting a hug for Father's Day.

Liz basically done? Can anything be salvaged? Didnt most of his really bad games come recently when they tried him at starter again. I thought he was somewhat effective when coming out of the bullpen.

Wow remember last year when we trotted out Liz, Olsen and Cabrera? Miss those days.

I heard they're going to set off a bomb on the moon here soon. I was hoping they would just wait until Wieters got into one.

Darn, that's a turn in the opposite direction. Sort of have to feel bad for the guy, but not when he is getting hit hard.
