Orioles Come to Terms with First Round Draft Pick Matt Hobgood
The Orioles today announced that they have come to terms with RHP MATT HOBGOOD, their first-round pick (5th overall selection) in the 2009 First Year Player Draft.
Hobgood earned national accolades for his performance at Norco (CA) High School. He was named the 2008-09 Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year and earlier this week was named to USA Today's All-USA Baseball team.
The 6-for-4, 245-pound right-hander went 9-0 with a 0.38 ERA in his senior season. He pitched 55.0 innings in 2009, allowing 18 hits, walking 19 and striking out 84.
This year marked the second straight draft the Orioles selected a pitcher with their first round pick. LHP BRIAN MATUSZ was the club's first round pick (4th overall selection) out of the University of San Diego in 2008. Recently promoted to Double-A Bowie, Matusz is 5-2 with a 1.98 ERA in 12 starts with the Baysox and Single-A Frederick.
