Orioles (no Roberts) lineup
| | Comments (42)

I received a text message from my sister as I was driving to the ballpark this morning:

"You OK? Mom's in a panic because you stopped blogging last night."

Geez, can't a guy coast for one night?

I'm fine. I'm also doing a segment on O's Xtra, which begins today at 1 p.m. on MASN. And that, my friends, is your shameless plug alert.

And this is your Sunday lineup. It's a new look. See how you like it:

Adam Jones - CF
Ty Wigginton - 2B
Nick Markakis - RF
Aubrey Huff - 1B
Nolan Reimold - LF
Luke Scott - DH
Oscar Salazar - 3B
Matt Wieters - C
Robert Andino - SS
David Hernandez - RHP

The Orioles confirmed today that Koji Uehara has gone on the disabled list, retroactive to June 24, with right elbow tendinitis.

I honestly don't get it? What a stupid line-up. Wiggy is a two hole hitter? Mora has just started to pick it up a little bit so DZT sits him? Roberts should have sat some time ago. Boy we really love Wiggy don't we? How about giving Salazar as much a chance to play as Wiggy and lets see what he produces. Wiggy has had his chances and I don't see any great results from him. Here is a chance to really nail down a win, have your best team behind Hernandez during his first start after being recalled, and getting bcak to ONLY five under .500. It's a wonder we have such troubles on Sundays and closing out series!

adam said:

Stupid Lineup? Oscar needs to play more? DO you even understand what is going on? Guys need to rest. ESPECIALLY before we start a Red Sox series, which means Division games.

Mora needs a break, roberts needs a break. Wiggy and Oscar are our only two backup infielders. BACKUP infielders should not play more than your STARTING infielders, kinda DUMB if they do.

This is a great Lineup. Jones to lead off is wonderful. Scott DH'ing is even better.

Ryan said:

Love it. Wiggy is hot, getting him is good. Salazar deserves a chance and Mora needs more rest. Put Wieters above Salazar and it is even better.

Hmm. I don't know quite how I feel about this lineup. Wiggy second is kinda throwing me off. But I guess with your leadoff man getting a day off you kinda have to totally jumble everything. Jonesy should work in the leadoff spot, especially since he has so much speed. I'm glad Salazar is getting some playing time, and I'm also glad to see that Dave wasn't kidding when he said Nolan was in the 5 spot for a while. Good to see!

SHERNORIOLES said:

tREMBLEY DOES THIS ALL THE TIME!!!!Especially on the days they have a chance to sweep or take the series! I dont get it either. Jones in lead off??? Wigginton hitting 2nd. Rest roberts but dont make more than the one change. Sunday losing is very explainable look at the line ups on sunday!!!
Go orioles!!!

Steve said:

I disagree with Karl.

I like the lineup except for Luke Scott. He is a streaky hitter and right now he is NOT hitting. Roberts definitely needs a break.

Go O's! SWEEP!

Peter said:

at this point, if Reimold is in the line-up, I don't care about the rest. Get out the brooms for a sweep today. when was the last time the O's swept a series, got swept and then swept the next. gotta have lots of patience with a young team, lots of ups and downs.

Tracy said:

I'm really not feeling Wiggy in the #2 spot.

I probably would have bumped Andino up into the 2 hole, and put Wigginton in before Scott and bumped everyone else down a notch. That being said, I don't get paid to manage so we'll see how this lineup does today. I'm not feeling overly optimistic, but it isn't horrible.

Hi Roch

Ill see you on the set today. Ill be the guy standing in the crowd.

So nothing better then a funky line-up today. As in one of my previous posts, I don't care in what order people hit, you either hit or you don't. I never got the blah di hublah over he hits better in this spot. It's the same darn ball comin' at ya. Maybe only the guy hitting behind you being good argument works here. But it seems like we have 8 home run hitters in a row and Andino who won't go down easy. I'll be cheering my lungs out for Hernandez.

By the way Roch; recently at work (mold removal & remediation) everything in the basement/crawlspace had to go, since the owner had died. I found an old Baltimore Colts football signed by it looks like a whole team. Where would I go to confirm these signatures? BTW I don't think I saw a Johnny U on there. Some signed their numbers along with it: #37/#77(Orlando?)/#81/#24/#64/#82/#58/#40 etc etc...Also I rescued two bins filled with thousands of baseball/basketball/football/other sports cards including several rookie cards like emmitt smith and mike mussina and I have't even uncovered 10% percent of the cards. Most are in Mint Condition and in sleeves. Any idea where I should go from here???? I would consider giving the ball to the Sports Legend Museum after I find out its worth. Thanks
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That's great stuff. I'm thinking it might be wise to contact someone at the museum, since they have so much Colts and Orioles memorabilia. They could take a look at it and answer any questions. I also have a feeling that we'll be hearing from some readers who could steer you in the right direction (perhaps to them). Good luck. Let me know how it turns out. And give me a shout today. - Roch

Unlike seemingly everyone else on the planet, I just dont get much angina from the daily lineups. That said, I am eager to see Salazar at third and equally eager to see how batting second, which often requires patience or taking pitches or bat control, affects Wiggy's at bats. I wonder if this is something DT is doing intentionally in synch with the observations here that Wiggy is too aggressive early in counts.

Doug said:

I hate to say this but you guys just don't pay enough attention to baseball. Seemingly unusual lineups are a staple of Sunday games. It happens all around the league. Earl Weaver, someone who maybe you recall, did it all the time. It is a day game after a night game and gives guys a chance to rest and others a chance to get some at bats. Trembely knows what he is doing. Stop fretting about every little move. " Oh my God, look who's hitting second! What's going to happen to our team? Fire the manager."

Mark C in So PA said:

The Orioles recently have won back-to-back Sunday games against the Phillies and Braves, with the substitutes! You all seem to think the team is made up of iron men. The regulars need to rest. Roberts is 0-for-10 with 5 K's the last 3 games. Mora last off day was June 14th. He and his nagging injuries should be off at least once a week.

My complaint, no Zaun! He goes 3-for-4 with a HR and gets sat down. :)

ravenos said:

i don't mind the lineup. Lannan is a lefty, and brian has struggled a bit from the right-side. Wiggy is hitting .400 the last 15 games he has played in. Plus, all of you guys have been on roberts case for a month now, so why the gripe now?

Jack said:

I have to admit, this lineup "lacks" a spark plug.
So Karl, yes I agree with you!

These players train and condition all winter long. Is the era of coming to work everyday with the intentions of working gone for good?

The Orioles should take notes from the "bar" you have set Roch. Or better yet, maybe they should take part in your conditioning program. You NEVER seem to miss a day as your mom and sister have pointed out. Too bad you can't hook up with Koji. He needs the bar set higher for him. Andrew paid all that money for a 2 month pitcher. Oh, Andrew is the wonder GM...LOL

WTG Andrew!

I kinda like the new-look lineup. You're prone to have some eye raisers whenever two regulars are sitting on the same day. That said, this would be my lineup with this roster.

CF- Jones
LF- Markakis
RF- Reimold
1b- Huff
DH- Scott
2B- Wiggy
C- Wieters
3B- Salazaar
SS- Andino

I like the lineup. This will get Wiggy more at bats in the game, which is what he needs. He's a capable hitter. Mora has heated up lately due to the fact that he was moved down. Trembley may have been a little late in the move, but it was the right move and he got the right response from all the players.

Zaun has been great this month due to Wieters giving him a lot of time off. Zaun admitted that much in yesterday's pre-game.

B-Rob needed to take the ENTIRE series off, not just one day!!! He's looked terrible. He'll get it together, though, when the Red Sox come around. I think throughout the season, he may need a few more days off here and there. They all think they can play everyday, but it's clearly not the case.

Is anyone besides me ready to see Dibble go? There's only room for Jim Palmer in that booth!

Hey Roch, I am with your family. I checked your blog and it dropped off the scope. I checked back a couple of times and not even a pebble, let along a Roch. Is there a long haired beauty occupying some of your time that we do not know about? It makes a lot of sense to give players an extra day off. The season is long and we want Mora banging out hits in September and Roberts leaping through the air to snare a fly ball and record an out, not a triple. Once in awhile, I notice a certain amount of perverse mumbling on your site. I heartily approve of keeping the mumblers on. You are providing them with an outlet and excellent therapy. No one else in the known world would pay the least attention to them. (A condition I think has led to their current frustrations. Where is Sigmund when we need him?)

Oreo,

Obviously, not seeing the ball it makes it harder but if they
are fm the Unitas era, 77 would be Jim Parker, 82 Raymond Berry, 24 Lenny Moore, 81 Ordell Braese, 40 Bob Boyd, the others I'm not sure. If that is a 68 vice 58 it could be Alex Sandusky. If the ball is more modern or is a mixture, 40 could be Bruce Laird. Hope this helps.

Love the lineup. If nothing else its fun to change things up; at least from a fan's viewpoint.

I admit that I also checked masnsports at least a dozen times in between the last entry and this one... but as far as I'm concerned that's a great thing. We love the team and this blog so much that we always just crave more, more, and more. You do a great job, Roch, and you do deserve to coast for as long as need be.

Roch - I will tell you how I like the line-up after the game hahaha. You also had me wondering last night what had happened. Thought it was my laptop or something.

Side bar - I think Zahn DH'ng or even Wieters would be great. Especially with Zahn having a hot bat. I know this wouldn't probably happen with only two catchers on the roster. Who is the "emergency" catcher anyhow?

Look i am not a big dave t fan but we are getting to the point where every little thing he does fans aren't happy about it. As i have learned from my marriages you have to pick your battles because you can't possibly win every one. Please i just want one other person out there to agree with me, that BRIAN Roberts really doesn't want to be on the orioles. Don't people realize that the only way you can get players to play at 100% effort is to have a purpose in coming to the ball park every day. In the last 11 years they haven't had that reason. If you were in contention and had a legitimate chance at making the playoffs you wouln't have to harp on most players to hustle they would be willing to run through a wall. Brian Roberts is way passed all of that even with $40,000,00 reason to do so.

Andy McPhail just told Tom Davis that Felix Pie has been... "a source of frustration for me, personally..."

I think Pie won't last much longer... I never liked getting him in the first place - right after signing Wiggy and Freel. However, I understood that he should get playing time. After Montanez and Reimold emerged, though, it's clear again that we do not need Pie.

I hope he finds a good home somewhere in the NL.

Two substitutes in the infield on the same day, and that too when a rookie is pitching? The only saving grace is that Hernandez is more of a strikeout/flyball pitcher than a groundball pitcher.

Roch,

Since you didn't blog your usual post game Dave Trembley comments last evening, I'm not sure if you were in attendance to hear them. Dave said something so inconsistent with his oft stated core belief that the "team
comes first", yet no one challenged him on it. DT was asked if he considered sending Guthrie out for the sixth inning after Reimhold's home run had put the O's ahead 4-3. Dave's response was that, if the game had been tied or if the Orioles were still trailing, he would have sent Guthrie out for another inning. He went on to say (and I'm paraphrasing here) that Guthrie "had already climbed the mountain twice and once we got the lead, I wasn't going to ask him to do it a third time." Now, there are a lot of reasons to pull a pitcher...pitch count, fatigue, ineffectiveness, injury, etc. However, if the manager would have sent Guthrie out for the sixth had the Orioles not gone ahead, Dave's response indicated that he wasn't concerned about any of those things. Clearly, he placed more importance on Jeremy having a chance to win the game than saving 1-2 members of the bullpen. [Not exactly, putting the team first.] Ironically, what does it convey to Guthrie that the manager doesn't have enough confidence in him holding the lead for one more inning? Had the game played out the way it did last night (and I grant you that there's no way to know if it would have), neither Bass nor Albers would have appeared. With the Red Sox series coming up, it remains to be seen as to how significant this may be.

Finally, are the writers intimidated by Dave Trembley? I find the post game interviews shown on MASN full of pure vanilla, cream puff type questions. Rarely, does the assemblage ask penetrating questions and, like last night, rarely the follow-up question. I think most of us would much prefer hearing the writers question Dave on strategy than asking if he was "pleased to see Reimhold hit a 3 run homer." I believe that the Orioles' W-L record invites constructive criticism of the team and its manager... especially when it appears contradictory. And I think the writers can differentiate between this kind of questioning from pure second-guessing.

I'll decide what I think of the line-up after the game is over! Different things happen all the time, no matter what the line-up is. Sometimes Dave shakes things up and it works, sometimes it doesn't. I'm another one who doesn't really get angina over the line-up. Brian seems to need a day off though, so that may be beneficial for him.

You deserve to coast more, Roch. You blog more than enough, always keeping the fans up to date on things.

Brummie whining about fake posts under your name, just like Jack, is just plain funny. You have been warned to knock off your repetitive boorishness for many months but you refused. Now people are giving you what you deserve.

Roch is too busy to check e-mail addresses just because you are a whining loser. He has more important things to do. You are a nobody and a nothing. You need to get that through your thick wanna-be British skull once and for all.

I warned you "both" a long time ago that you have made a lot of enemies on this blog but you refused to listen. There are probably 10 or 15 people who make posts under your "names" at different times in random states of sobriety.

The simple fact of the matter is you are now reaping the results of your rearholery. If you don't like it, the solution is simple, get off Roch's blog. Nobody will miss you. Trespass at MacPhail's house and get arrested instead.

My guess is the scoreboard will say Adam Jones has 3,289 career at bats against Lannan. quite a career if you ask me. Even Wieters has nearly 1,000 at bats against the guy. Based on the scoreboard readings from last night, some of the Nats pitchers must double as a pitching machine at local batting cages in the off season. Even I have a few hundred at bats against Ron Villone...

~~I have to admit, this lineup "lacks" a spark plug.~~

The evidence against Jack being an Oriole fan mounts. There are three things you KNOW about a Baltimore sports fan.

1. they refuse to admit that the 1969 sports year actually occured

2. After the '79 Series, they HATE the song "We Are Family"

3. Owing to the same series when Tim Foli was referred to ad nauseum as "the little spark plug" by Howard Cosell, NO O's fan ever uses that term.

Lucky Horseshoe said:

Random thought . . . Just watched Huff snare a tough short hop on a hard hit grounder to first. Is it possible that Huff is like Mora once was. Thought of as "competent" at a couple positions but could really be a "good" 1B or 3B if he was left to concentrate at one position?

Why not try Andino at the top?

If the Orioles lose today, it's a stupid lineup. If they win, it's a stroke of genius. That's how it works.
