Summertime Blues

Well, this is shaping up to be the worst summer of my life, and it's only mid-June. Let me take you back less than two weeks ago in the Always Bet Against Cakes time machine, and check out a line from my post, Greatest Weekend Ever: "Good night, Pittsburgh...IT'S OVER."

I hope everybody bet the ranch on the Penguins to win the Stanley Cup, because I put the hex on the Red Wings with my idiotic proclamation that the series was over after just two games. Now there will be even more annoying bandwagon Pens fans infesting our area after their latest Stanley Cup win. Not only did I have to watch Sidney Crosby kiss the cup, but I had to endure seeing Mario Lemieux win another title as an owner, after he tormented the Capitals throughout his career.

So the Steel City gets a Super Bowl victory and a Stanley Cup win in the same year...what does DC get? We get hosed in the NBA Draft Lottery, getting the 5th pick when we have the 2nd-most balls in the hopper; the Capitals death spiral in game 7 against the Pens; and the team with the worst record in the majors, the Washington Nationals.

I haven't even mentioned the fact that we're about to enter the sports dead zone on the calendar. Once the NBA Finals conclude, and from the looks of the Lakers-Magic series, that could be by the time you've read this blog, it's nothing but baseball for a solid month and a half.

I can't believe I'm actually fiending for meaningless preseason NFL games, but it has officially come down to that. Even though the sporting landscape seems pretty barren until NFL training camps kick off, there are a few intriguing events looming to help bridge the gap:

The U.S. Open - June 18-21 - Tiger Woods tries for his 15th major championship at the site of his 2002 U.S. Open victory, Bethpage Black in New York. Tiger has already notched two victories in 2009, including a win at
The Memorial Tournament that featured a closing-round 65. It should be interesting to see how Phil Mickelson fares in his first major since dealing with his wife Amy's breast cancer battle.

The NBA Draft - June 25 - The Wizards hold the 5th pick in a one-player draft, so their options are all over the map. Stay at the 5th spot and draft for need, perhaps a rugged power forward like Jordan Hill of Arizona. Deal the 5th pick and a player (Antawn Jamison?) for a veteran to help Flip Saunders in the short term. It's a shame that a talent like Blake Griffin will be relegated to the NBA's version of Siberia, the L.A. Clippers, since they hold the #1 pick in the NBA Draft.

The joke that is Yankee Stadium - Through 61 games, there have already been 110 home runs jacked out of Yankee Stadium; that's just 193 short of the MLB record set at Coors Field in 1999. When you're playing in the Mile High City, it makes sense for the ball to travel further, but it shouldn't happen in The Big Apple. Pretty good way to spend over a billion dollars--to build a glorified wiffle ball park.

The development of Matt Wieters - The Orioles' 23-year-old phenom started out slow, batting just .143 in his first eight games. Though he has yet to notch a home run or RBI, he's 6 for 11 in his last 3 games and appears ready to deliver on the promise that made him the 5th overall pick in the 2007 MLB Draft.

Summertime Blues News? It is funny that there's NOTHING going on on the DC Sports landscape until everyone gets their hopes up unnecessarily over the Redskins if they win a preseason game or two. I guess the AT&T will be exciting to have in town yet again - I'm guessing that Tiger wins at Bethpage and then doesn't care about the DC tourney in the least.

Bandwagon Pens fans? Are you serious? Before there was "Rock the Red" most people in this city hardly knew that hockey was played outside of Canada. Please, Cakes, I know you have been a longtime hockey fan, don't dare call Pens fans "bandwagon" fans.

Hey Cakes, you guys all rock first of all! Good or bad, there's plenty of baseball to be played before NFL preseason starts up. I'm a die-hard O's fan, and I watch them every night (win or loose, good or bad). I'll watch the Nats as well even if they suck. That said, I'm leaving for Italy on July 2 for a week and a half, so that's definitely on my radar! (And you know that you're a baseball/O's fan when you're planning a trip like that and you're worried how you're going to follow the team aside from the website!)
