Tonight's pitchers: Bergesen vs. Detwiler
RHP Brad Bergesen (4-2, 3.94) tonight makes his 13th start of this season, his 8th at home and his 2nd this year vs. Washington.
Bergesen has not taken a loss since May 19th at Yankee Stadium. In fact, over his last five starts, he is 3-0, 2.35. The O's are 7-5 when Bergesen starts, winning in four of his last five outings.
In seven home starts, Bergesen is 4-1, 3.30 and the Orioles are 6-1 when Bergesen starts at Camden Yards.
The 23-year-old has walked just 17 and fanned 35 in 77 2/3 innings on the year. Last Saturday at Philadelphia, he did not get a decision, when he allowed four runs in 6 1/3 frames.
Bergesen faced the Nationals on May 24th and did not get a decision. That night he pitched 5 2/3, allowing eight hits and four runs with no walks and two strikeouts.
LHP Ross Detwiler (0-3, 4.76) tonight makes his 8th Major League start of the season, his 3rd road start and the 2nd start of his career vs. the Orioles.
In his last start vs. Toronto, Detwiler pitched seven innings and gave up six hits and two runs. In four June starts, he is 0-2, 4.74.
The 23-year-old spent much of the early part of this season with Double-A Harrisburg before his call to the Majors on May 18th. The Nats are just 1-6 when he starts.
At Harrisburg, Detwiler was 0-3, 2.96 in six starts, pitching to an ERA of 1.20 in his last three starts there.
Before the season, he was ranked as the Nats' second-best prospect by Baseball America. He was Washington's first-round pick, number six overall, in 2007 out of Missouri State University.
Detwiler is tough to hit in the first inning. He has not been scored on in that inning all year and opponent batters have just three hits in 26 first-inning at bats against him.
On May 23rd, Detwiler did not get a decision despite pitching very well vs. the Orioles. In six innings he gave up just one hit and one run with four walks and strikeouts.
