Washington Nationals Partner with Becky's Fund to Host 1st Ever Domestic Violence Awareness Day at Nationals Park
| | Comments (0)

The Washington Nationals and Becky's Fund will host Domestic Violence Awareness Day at Nationals Park on Friday, July 3, when the team plays the Atlanta Braves at 6:35pm. Becky's Fund is a public charity dedicated to domestic violence awareness and prevention. The Nationals have joined the fight against this human rights offense and invite their fans to strike out domestic violence with Becky's Fund.

The Nationals will raise awareness throughout the evening's game with PSA's, during pregame ceremonies, and through the distribution of materials at the team's Community Desk. District of Columbia Ward 5 Councilmember Harry Thomas will present a resolution passed by the DC Council prior to the start of the game, declaring July 3, 2009 "Domestic Violence Awareness Day" in Washington, DC, and will present The Bill of Domestic Violence Rights. Councilmember Thomas will challenge Nationals fans and District residents to join the fight against Domestic Violence, which affects one in every three women in their lifetime. Nationals fans may visit the Community Desk, located in the Left Field V, for more information on Becky's Fund, to make donations, and for the chance to win t-shirts and autographed memorabilia.

"We are very proud to partner with Becky's Fund on this very important issue that sadly affects thousands of women who are shamed into silence," commented Chartese Burnett, Nationals Vice President of Communications and Community Relations. "With our prominence as a professional sports team and our dedication to being a good neighbor, we are committed to utilizing our resources to positively impact the health and well-being of our local community. We are hopeful that the voices of abused women will be heard on July 3 at Domestic Violence Awareness Day at the Park."

"We are grateful and honored that the Washington Nationals are hosting this event," said Becky Lee, Executive Director and Founder of Becky's Fund. "The Nationals organization is a committed and active partner in the community. Every time a celebrated member of the community steps forward and volunteers time, energy, and access to the public and the media, one more light is shone upon this epidemic of violence infecting our homes, schools, campuses and workplaces and which is often concealed behind closed doors. We hope that other leaders and role models throughout the country will follow the Nationals' example and step up to the plate for this important cause. If we reach a handful of young men and women at an event we believe our efforts to be worthwhile. The Nationals have truly given us an amazing opportunity to reach thousands in one night."
