Power Rankings, Albers getting better
Tuesday: Izturis on the mend | Wednesday: Koji seriously injured | Thursday: Could Sherrill be traded? | Friday: Power Ranking, Reimold and Hobgood
Monday, June 29:
Steve Melewski wonders if the O's can hang with the Red Sox: "From 2006-2008, the O's went 15 and 39 vs. the Sox.
But this is a much different and hopefully better O's team than Boston swept in April and even then, three of the four losses were by a combined five runs.
That team had Felix Pie in left, Gregg Zaun catching and Melvin Mora on the DL. Jamie Walker and Radhames Liz were in the bullpen. Brian Bass had an ERA of 14.73. Mark Hendrickson and Adam Eaton were in the rotation and both started in that series.
Since playing at Fenway, the O's have added to the roster Brad Bergesen, Jason Berken, Rich Hill and David Hernandez (twice) for the rotation.
They've also added Nolan Reimold, Matt Wieters and Oscar Salazar.
No doubt the Red Sox will get a better look at the O's future this series than they did before.
Are these O's ready to knock off the Red Sox?" [masnsports.com]
Dan Connolly wirtes on Matt Albers' recent successful stretch: "Reliever Matt Albers has allowed just one earned run in his past 13 innings covering 10 outings (0.68 ERA). His most impressive performance of 2009 came Saturday, when he entered with the bases loaded and no outs in the sixth and induced consecutive ground balls to end the threat.
It cemented his role as Trembley's first option to bridge the gap between the starters and late-inning relievers Danys Baez and Jim Johnson." [Baltimore Sun]
ESPN.com ranks the O's No. 23 in their power poll: "After losing eight of nine games, the Orioles won nine of their next 14 games." [ESPN.com]
Aram Tolegian ranks the O's No. 22 in his power rankings: "Although we think he's great, we're starting to think Nick Markakis may never develop into a 30-HR hitter." [Fox Sports]
Ryank Fagan puts the Orioles No. 23 in his power poll: "They didn't sweep the Nats this weekend, but taking two out of three is better than what the Yankees were able to accomplish against the majors' worst team. So there's that, which is nice." [Sporting News]
The Loss Column looks at Rick Zagone: "Perhaps the best example of why I love writing this column is discovering jewels like Rick Zagone, who has been promoted to Frederick. Zagone made his debut against the Wilmington Blue Rocks (KC) and did not disappoint with six innings of three hit shutout ball, allowing just one walk and striking out five." [The Loss Column]
