What's up, Breaux?
| | Comments (1)

In addition to the rookies the Ravens currently have on their roster, 10 more guys are at The Castle this week on a trial basis.

The most interesting (and largest) of the tryout guys is Tommy Breaux (pronounced "bro"), who stands at 6-foot-7, 199 pounds. Breaux played football and basketball at Towson, and after having a tryout with the Redskins earlier this offseason, he's in Owings Mills this week, trying out for his hometown team.

"It's like a dream come true," Breaux said. "There's nothing better than playing at home. I'm just having a blast being here."

Breaux looks a little like Manute Bol out on the field, especially when he's got a 5-foot-10 cornerback lined up in front of him. He seems like he's got decent hands, a clearly can cover a lot of ground with just a few strides, but needs to work on the finer points of route running.

He's still very raw, having played only parts of two seasons at Towson, but his size and athletic ability help him overcome some of his flaws.

Breaux played on the Tigers' basketball team during the '06-'07 season, and averaged 5.9 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. He then made the switch to football because he thought his chances of making it in the pros were greater on the gridiron.

Despite the change in sports, Breaux, who will turn 25 tomorrow, still used a hoops analogy to describe his transition from Towson to the Ravens.

"It's like going from high school to the NBA," he said.

Breaux battled injuries throughout his two years playing football at Towson, but he posted five TDs in his final four games of the season. That stretch earned him some attention from scouts, some of whom had him projected as a late second-day pick.

"It definitely helped jump start my career and showed I have some potential," Breaux said. "I'm still a young receiver but it definitely showed this young kid has potential to play this game."

Sounds like an interesting project but no room for him on the team. Hopefully he makes the practice squad at least.
