2 earned runs in four innings
That might be an acceptable outing if you're working in long relief, but Jason Berken was starting tonight.
Berken took a shutout into the fifth and didn't record an out before Matt Albers replaced him. The first four batters reached, including Chone Figgins on Brian Roberts' error. Roberts tried to flip the ball to second for the force when he should have turned and made a strong throw.
Berken is charged with three runs total. He allowed seven hits and threw 85 pitches.
When he runs into trouble, it's often because his fastball stays over the plate and dares the batter to hit it. It looks like it's on a tee.
This wasn't a disastrous outing, but Berken will need to step up now that David Hernandez has done the same.
Meanwhile, Japanese right-hander Ryohei Tanaka made his first start tonight for Double-A Bowie after eight scoreless appearances out of the bullpen. He blanked Altoona over five innings, allowing three hits and striking out one.
Tanaka hasn't permitted a run in 17 innings since joining the Baysox from extended spring training.
Who figured that he might have a more successful season than Koji Uehara?

Berken just isn't efficient with his pitches. He had 60+ through 3 innings. That just doesn't cut it. Personally I think he would learn more and help the team if they moved him to the bullpen for the rest of the year. They can room in the bullpen by moving Hendrickson.
I don't think Berken can learn much in the minors this year. So I guess we will see Tillman before the end of July?
Well, if Robby had handled the ground ball cleanly, he might have gotten out of the inning with only 1 run scored. It wasn't a great outing, but it wasn't bad either. The Angels are a tough team.
That was Roberts 7th error this season. Since he's been a 2B full time he has never made more than 9 in a FULL season. Mentally he isn't there. Unfortunately the Orioles have no leadoff options.
Roch- I just don't see what the problem is with Hernandez. People are talking down about him, but, he really only had 1 poor outing and that was not a TERRIBLE one, just slightly bad.
He has so much more dominating stuff than Berken.
I personally think that Berken is on showcase for other teams to take a look at.
Could Tanaka be a possible call-up if he continues to dominate??

I'd think there are quite a few guys ahead of him, but he's turning into an interesting story and he's worth tracking. - Roch
Roch,
Berken threw 85 pitches through 4 innings....only 45 for strikes. Not good. To me he seems frustrated and isn't having success.....he might need to go back to AAA and have some success.
OMG!!! Nick and B-Rob have had this problem ALL YEAR LONG! INEXCUSABLE!!
This CAN'T be the future. This MUST be straightened out.
B-Rob has not been here this year. Mentally... physically...
When it was 4-1 and Baez struggling, I got that feeling like the Red Sox game last week when Johnson came in. I began mentally preparing myself for another loss on the road.
Walk, out... single... walk... out... bloop single... walk... double... out.
This team at least softens you first and prepares you for their death. You expect it. You're not caught off guard. It doesn't happen quickly or suddenly.
Roberts needs to sit a few games. He has been pathetic.
Dare I use the phrase... but methinks it's time B-Rob finds himself a slumpbuster.
Roberts makes another big mental error in the 7th inning leading to the go-ahead run scoring for the Angels. Neither he nor Markakis go hard for a pop-up that one of them should have caught. The nonchalant play is getting contagious.
Brian Roberts may have committed his seventh error in the fifth inning, but none was greater thatn the one he wdidn't get in the Angels 7th. Then to have Gary Thorne, who knows as much baseball as most 12 year olds, tries to pin it all on Markakis. At least Palmer was there to quickly correct him. That was Brian Robert's ball all the way. He needs to be lit into, but I can here Dave saying after the game . . . ."that's baseball, we don't like when it happens, we'll just move on".
can we fire this bum dave tremblay soon we all know if that was felix pie out there he'd be on the bench now i'm sick of looking at dave he's a fool
One of the tests for a manager of a struggling team is whether or not he still has the of his team. Once the manager "loses the team" there is no chance things will get better. Dave Trembley hasn't lost this team, but in my opinion he has already lost one very important player, Brian Roberts.
Berken should be in the minors. I missed most of his best start and only win and would agree Roch that the ball looks like it's on a tee when he needs to come in. Ship him out tonight for McCrory(bullpen help without using an option) and then bring up Tillman to become the fifth starter after the all-star break and he pitches in the Future's Game.
I dont know who you guys are being fooled by, but we are going to suck forever...even our best players are horrible. Thats why none of our guys are going to make the all star game. Markakis is a bum, Jones sucks, Roberts is too old to make a difference. Nobody on our staff can throw strikes. Weiters is a bust....if you just saw that last play you would agree that Mora should be cut...Roch, I have been an O's fan for over 20 years, do I have any reason to be optimistic???
If any one thinks brian or nick has played well so far this year is watching a different game than i am!! That bloop in the 7th between nick and brian is unexcusable!! The error against brian in the 5th started the angels come back! The bloop in the 7th between nick and brian has happened before. Is trembley saying anything to these players that are making these mistakes?> Mora made a mistake in the bottom of 8th! Mora looks lost at the plate big time. This team has given up a 4-0 lead. Although berken really wasnt that good. Threw alot of pitches.
What the heck is Melvin Mora doing. This team needs to get it's head out of it's collective rear ends and play with some focus. Hate to pick on the guy, but it is the manager's job to get maximum performance out of his team.
Earl Weaver would be meeting a lot of these guys at the top step of the dugout as they come off the field.
Boy, Chone Figgins would look good at 3rd base for the O's next year. Just not sure the Angels will let him go. Trade for Brandon Wood.
Think we could use a left-hander to face Abreau in the late innings?
So the waffle house was cited?
Actually it is a rebuilding year for that waffle house so no one expected them to dominate the International Exhibition of Culinary Art or Bocuse d'or. You cant worry about wins and losses . . . I mean citations but instead you have to concentrate on how the young grill man holds concentration while shouting out a greeting. How the kid waitress uses that 5 tool talent (greeting, balancing plates, getting your order right, flirting to increase tip and adding up your bill correctly) to fulfill her potential high ceiling. Only the most pissy of bile drinkers are fretting over how effective the manager fills out his schedule. There is still time to figure out who is a morning shift specialist, who has the fortitude for a long graveyard shift and who will be relegated to swing shift.
Here's hoping Jack and Brummie get a spitball in their grits, a curveball in their pants and a slider through the bacon grease into the honey pot.
Never bring Bryan Bass into a one or two run game, especially late. He's just not built for it.
It would be so much easier to be a fan of this team if they would just lose, rather than losing with all the ugliness and drama.
When will the madness stop..$21 million dollars ayear for the two "faces" of the organization and they can't decide who will catch a routine pop up. As much as I think Dave Trembley is good manager, he is not the one for the team we want to field. He will never chew those two out when they both deserve it.
Roch,
In my honest opinion the Orioles have awful TV broadcasters. The "A" team is actually the very bottom of pile. Thorne wants to anticipate things which might work well on radio but when we can see the event (and our eyes must be better than his) because he can't tell what pitches are and he totally blew the ball Adam Jones brought back in the other night. But most importantly, for years I've heard our HOF pitcher Jim Botox & Dye Palmer say on a close play at first that a Tie goes to the runner. To quote Tim McClellan "There are no ties and there is no rule that says the tie goes to the runner. But the rule book does say that the runner must beat the ball to first base, and so if he doesn't beat the ball, then he is out. So you have to make the decision. That's why umpires are paid the money they are, to make the decision on if he did or if he didn't. The only thing you can do is go by whether or not he beat the ball. If he did, then he is safe.
This is horrid for a MLB announcer to say silliness like this but a HOF player! Get them off the air and hire Joe Angel and Fred Manfra because all of the MASN guys are just bad!
It's time for Trembley to flip over the buffet table and drop a few f-bombs on these clowns. It will be tougher for this organization to change its loser mentality than to find some pitching, as we have seen tonight. Pathetic.
If brian wants to play on a winning team who wants him? He isnot worth what the orioles are paying him! Nick has hit into 2 double plays tonight! I am starting to think Nick isnot worthy of his contract either. They need to release Bass. His last several outings have been awful. I mean awful.. Last night's win looks like the only one the orioles are going to get in this series.. Hill is pitching tomorrow!!ouch!! Berken isnot ready to pitch here! He really has not shown any improvement in his starts! This is really a bad ball club and it shows really big against good teams!! Even if they get a well pitched game they find a way to lose. Tonight and sunday for example.. Seattle is hot!!!
We are the worst team in the history of MLB. Forget about what Jack and Brummie say, we are absolutely terrible. Any team with any self respect would not have lost this game. Mora...awful, Roberts...awful, Markakis...overrated, Jones...unproven, huff...just playing out contract, Sherrill...bum, Oh, Trembley is the worst manager in the game. I am seriously considering rooting for the NATS...I said it...
Roch,
Our fundamentals suck! That act between Brob and Nick and no tirade from old Dynamo Dave? Whats up with that? The guy sits in the dugout like he's on downers! A little emotion would go a long way! Yeah I know it's 0230 on the east coast but OMG! We have a .240 hitting back-up SS who like the rest of team, can't lay down a sacrifice bunt to save is butt! Accountability, and not in the starting pitching! Berkin is destined for the pen, he gets thru the order twice and gets lit up!
Dynamo Dave has got to go!
Roch,
tell me why I should cotinue to root for this team...
Keith - what good is a tirade, parade or Koolade gonna do? If it isnt DT's style, it will be seen as the fake playacting it would be. You cant intimidate like Lombardi when your players are on guaranteed contracts. If you want to shake the team up you need to cut a Mora or trade Roberts irregardless of the return. And then the same silly posts would be coming. Do little league players make that catch in RF? Sure. Do HOFers miss it too? Of course. In fact mistakes like that are so much part of the game that on the third floor of the HoF is a TV playing an endless loop of baseball bloopers. Good teams overcome those mistakes. Bad teams dont. Guess which the Orioles are.
